  • See me getting my Mazda 626 out of winter storage. Honestly, still not sure if it's a 1978 or 1979 ;). There will be a full feature about this car anytime soon.

    That's exactly how we would have the car set up in the Bronx in late 80s and early 90s with the rx-7 wheels and everything all you need is a rotary in it😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎

    Thanks for posting content on increasingly rare cars like this. Being a car guy from since I was a young child, I vividly recall my mother telling me stories about how she came to have the car she owned back then (a 1982 Ford Cortina 1.6L automatic), and that this model 626 was higher on her wish list, but she would have had to wait almost a year to buy one.
    In terms of cold starting the car, I do a slightly different procedure. I first switch the ignition on, then pump the accelerator pedal because you want the fuel pump running and building up fuel pressure. I leave the ignition on for 10-15 seconds, then I turn the key to start the engine. It works great and I can't recall a time when the engine died after it started and needing to be started a second time. Even for more modern fuel injected cars (90's, early 00's), I follow the same procedure (minus pumping the accelerator pedal)

      Great comment! Thanx a lot. So mate, I actually have to look into the manual from time to time, as I always forgot "the procedure" - hahaha. It differs in normal use between cold start and, let's say, regular start (you start just with throttle). However, I noticed a difference at all when I start the car out of storage. As weather is really terrible over here, the car was longer in storage than expected.

    6:26 (nice). Famous last words though. Even though I kinda agree. Them old Japanese things do be reliable :)

      10:50 about that stereo. There are stereos that look like they come straight out of the 70s/80s but have the modern ameneties like bluetooth & AUX. They're a little more on the expensive side. But they do exist, for if you want a period correct looking stereo :)

      Fun fact, when I parked the car that day, I found one of the headlights stone chipped 😂

    I had a 4 door 1980 as my first car. I probably have even half of engine on the attic and couple of carburetors. I had exactly the same bonnet style. I have tried to find it again but all are 2.0L engine versions with flat bonnets. My car died in 2005.

    I have an 88 mx6 turbo with stick. Where do you find parts for a 78?

      It turned out, that Australia was a place with lots of parts. But generally, you have to look at all places. Be creative. What do you need exactly?

      @@petrolpunx it's mostly small parts that wear out such as a left power window regulator. Thought the mpv part would fit, bit it was three inches too big. Anyone want an 88 mpv power window regulator. Just pay shipping. 😂 the 88 mx6 imho was a very decent car. But, I'm biased. Mine is in great shape. Ty for responding

    Hi there! I have a 1980 Capella (or 626 as it was known in most markets) here in the US! I'm glad to see another one being treasured so! ^_^
    Yours is a 1979 model. They started production in 1978, but late in the year and presented as a 1979 car. This body style only lasted for two years: 1979 and 1980 (mine was built in October of 1979 as a 1980 car) before the Capella was facelifted for the 1981 model year (production ending in 1982).

      @petrolpunx  Рік тому +1

      Thanks a lot for the comment! I've seen a few nice examples in the US. And yes, it's a 79 with the slat nose, as this is a 1.6. I wonder if they sold the 1.6 in the US?

    • @Doctor_Robert
      @Doctor_Robert Рік тому +1

      @@petrolpunx They did not. These were some of the last cars that engaged in an old mid-century practice Eurasian car companies did when selling in the US: the top-trim sport model became the base model.
      That is, the 626 could only be had with the top-of-the-line 2 litre and a 5-speed manual (or 3-speed automatic as an option) and testing with my car confirms that the overdrive 5th gear is absolutely needed for all our vast distances on freeways. Funnily enough, because Japanese cars were seen as inexpensive petrol-savers and despite the high trim drivetrain, most of the luxury features (like digital clock and tachometer) weren't available in my car (I added these things later to mine... because I felt frightfully fancy doing so)
      So we never got the slat-nose Capellas, just the... "full nose" (I suppose).
      In the US, this generation Capella (CB2) is exceptionally rare. The Facebook group for these cars is mostly populated with Australians and Kiwis (from New Zealand) as most CB2s survived there. There's about... five of us from the US.
      In fact, my car is so rare and parts are so scarce that, after my engine blew for the 3rd time in a mere 7 years of ownership, I'm swapping in a B6ZE from a 1990 Miata with matching transmission. I have loads of footage of my project so far, I just need to get around to editing it all... once I do, I'll start releasing it on UA-cam! ^_^

      @@Doctor_Robert it's really interesting. Also how the spec differs from the jdm models - but I will do a separate video about the 626/Capella soon. Anyway, they are vanished from European streets too. The few parts I've needed so far, they came from Australia 😂 - mechanical parts were fairly easy to get my hands on. Right after I've made the video, I saw that one of my headlights had a crack in it. Found a new unit in the Netherlands.

      @petrolpunx I swear, all NOS Mazda bits in Europe ended up in the Netherlands. Quite a bit of my car is Dutch-sourced too. 😁
