She fell in love with him immediately, and he left town not long after her leg healed so that talk wouldn't get started. Her parents arranged for her to marry Charles Emmerson,and he was cruel to her..beating her and raping her after their marriage. She left after she found out she was pregnant,and after her baby was born,it only lived a few days. She tried to kill herself by jumping off a cliff. Carlisle happened to be working in the local morgue,and turned her. They quickly fell in love and got married.

Have you seen the Carlisle & Esme prequel short film’ Masque’ by Cate Carson’? 'Masque' is an indie film, produced as a wildcard entry in the Twilight Storytellers short film contest. It is a cool film. It is set in 1922; shortly after Esme has been turned; but, it includes flashbacks to many of the tramautic events Esme had to deal with Since it is an indie film, of course we didn’t have the budget or access to Peter Facinnelli or Elizabeth Reaser; but, we think our Esme and Carlisle did a wonderful job.
