The wealthy and capitalism don't contribute to climate change ... they are it's 1# cause and ultimate manufacturers. The rest of us are told to use paper straws while they own the corporations, they built the systems, and they flit about on private jets. I really agree with your point that people who become right wing as they age have never been leftists anyway because lately I’ve been seeing TikToks of people referring their 2020 ‘activism’ as their “blm era” and cringing at it and I’m so shocked to find out how much people didn’t care about these causes and only did that because it was trendy at the time. A few years from now they’ll be doing the same about Palestine too probably. And it is just shameful that they’re willing to ignore everyone’s suffering just because they don’t feel like it anymore.

      Isn’t this basically a lot of hippy/youth culture in general? Contrary to popular belief hippies themselves weren’t really into social activism but more counter culture of going back to nature and ceasing to struggle or interact with the system. There were actual artists in African American community as well as other activists and committed to civil rights, anti violence, anti nuclear, environmental activism, etc., sometimes hippies but often not. And many people just went through a hippy phase and grew out of it.
      It’s interesting to see POV of someone like Joan Baez who was a bit older and more involved in protest music at the time on events like Woodstock. She seems a bit critical maybe but she does have a point about it’s actual impact

    totally agree here! Part of the faux rebellion obsession is partially an obsession with spectacle and having a frankly non-challenging cause because the cause for rebellion has become so corporately vacant (beyonce and taylor swift as perfect examples of being "feminist" but not in any way that challenges the system for regular people in any meaningful way) -- it's the dominant culture subsuming counter culture and assimilating it in a non-provoking, commodifiable form. It's like the rich appropriating the aesthetics of rebellion.

    I think the older I get the more leftist I get. Mostly, because now I have better info about the world problems than I did when I was younger. I think the idea that older people become right wing is because they would earn more money, so they'd get more greedy. Nowadays younger people don't really get that much money from doing a regular job as people used to. Many became radicalized when they started working a shitty low paying job.

    • @LisaFevral
      @LisaFevral  Місяць тому +20

      Yeah I think people tend to not believe other peoples experiences unless they match their own or their loved ones, so when most ppl make enough to live a decent life they genuinely assume tht those who don’t have purposefully failed, or didn’t work as hard, which is nonsense.

    • @Jane-ow7sr
      @Jane-ow7sr 4 дні тому

      I think the older people get the less time they have. It's easy to be a rebel when you're teen with no job and skip schoolwork, it's harder to be a rebel when you're working a 9-5 24/7 and have bills to pay and a life to build. You focus on the issues closer to you with a more cautious outlook viewing the long term slower changes rather than the big loud short term changes.
      Alot of older conservatives over time will forget even those issues and older "liberals" will be stuck with their old teenage beliefs while being complacent in an aesthetic of their past.
      In the end screaming protests and getting caught in the political web helps neither group and the only thing I can think of to unite people as it's done through most of history is to have a common enemy that is bold enough for us to physically fight instead of a subtle poison.

    I'm so glad you made this. I was just talking to a friend the other day about how there's no subcultures anymore and everything's been reduced to aesthetics, and it's because of this very boring performative version of "rebellion". Punk, goth, and grunge weren't just about the clothes you bought or the music you listened to, the were also about your ideologies and values. But so many people took it down to "yayyyy I'm wearing an interesting outfit and saying fuck you to The Man" that it just became about the signifiers of being counter-culture rather than actually being counter-culture. It's also why a lot of conservatives are convinced their the "real rebels". They have no idea what rebellion even is.

    • @elizrebezilmadommdo1662
      @elizrebezilmadommdo1662 День тому

      Let's be honest. Most of the people who participated in punk, goth, and grunge movements didn't do it for the ideologies and values either. Did it start that way for those subcultures? Yes. Did some of the participants still care about it? Of course. Did most of the teens/young adults who participated in it do it because they genuinely cared about the movement? Well, it doesn't seem that way, especially when you meet these people today. They just cared about the clothes and music. You talk to these people who used to participate in these subcultures, and many of them don't care about the beliefs and are just as superficial as the "normies", sometimes more. They did it to feel cool and different. Most people don't go a complete 180% in their beliefs as they get older, so I can't say that I'm optimistic enough to believe these people ever cared in the first place, especially when these same people openly admit they never cared about anything. I hear boomers and gen xers say, "We're genuine. We're the real punks." but don't care about anyone but themselves, they are satisfied with others being oppressed as long as it doesn't affect THEM, they don't criticise current systems, and they admit that they never cared about anything even back in the day, let alone politics or social issues, in the first place.

    real rebellion isn't marketable! and most aesthetic 'rebels' are just tryna sell you something
    but one good thing that has the potential to come out of the current oversaturation of aesthetics, is that a "rebellious look" frankly doesn't feel edgy or cool anymore.
    we see it every day, and know that it does't mean anything. so, it may keep becoming less easy to steal and rebrand the look - maybe we're moving toward only actual action feeling like the real thing, and being less distracted by people in a costume. one can hope!

    It's cool to see someone talk about this. I think that in most places of the world that aren't big, progressive American cities, just dressing differently, singing alternative music and doing simple things like dressing outside of gender norms (like men painting their nails or women wearing baggy clothes) is still looked down upon. And where I live, you're not even really allowed to speak about things like being queer, mental health or poverty, so I still appreciate artists who do those things, even if the public doesn't consider them subversive. And yet, mainstream celebrities absolutely use the aesthetic of rebellion and alternative culture to seem subversive, without actually saying anything. It's frustrating, gross, and cringe-worthy. It doesn't mean anything if you don't actually mean it, if you're just doing it for publicity and praise from the "normies" - it's inauthentic.
    I've spent my whole life in alternative music circles, and I appreciate the musicians who've actually advocated for things and practiced what they preached. No human being is perfect, even celebrities, so I don't expect them to be political experts or to constantly sacrifice their life for the public, but tbh, the state of modern entertainment/media/celebrities is just mind-numbing and depressing. Nobody can take away being black from Beyonce or being queer from Jojo Siwa, and everyone has a different experience as a marginalized person, but ultimately, they only advocate for themselves. So tired of the corporate feminism, rainbow washing bullshit.

    Oh I talked with friends about Taylor and the man just the other day and you are so right, adding to that, we were talking about it BECAUSE that tweets about her latest mv talking about the creatives SHE hired and always wanted to work with. Lisa you will not be surprised, yep, all of them were men expect for the last two names, two women (and one man) in charge of styling.
    So... You talk in your music (and speeches may I add) about how hard women has it to have success but the moment you have power and money to hire whoever the hell you want in the world, you still pick men. Yeah... What a rebel against inequiality.
    In case someone comes for me, name a woman in creative media that taylor has openly named and uplifted by working with her several times. No that gay guy that produces for her doesn't count.

      I remember the one time she made a half-*ssed attempt at condemning the death threats/doxxing/harassment in her fanbase. She only said "don't harass Joe Alwyn or John Mayer". Her fanbase harassed countless poorer journalists, women, women of color, and hurled homophobic slurs at a gay journalist for critiquing her tour. When she spoke up, it was only to defend rich, straight, white men.
      She has been friends with Drake, Matty Healy, Brigette Mahomes, and Lena Dunham for years - all of whom either perpetrated sex abuse or covered it up.

It feels like her n her pr team realized that they can profit off of her queerness after general audiences perception of her shifted from "annoying teen that acts like shes 10" to "great queer role model for kids" after she came out n have decided to lean into that without actually having enough care for the part of queer culture that she supposedly wants to contribute to to know that it already exists.

    Wow you really spoken the gospel truth even as a self proclaimed swiftie and beyhive you told a unspoken truth that a lot in the fanbases I’m in that don’t want to say, which is Taylor and Beyoncé do use feminism and black liberation as performative aesthetics people don’t know Beyoncé comes from the same upper middle class background as Taylor the only thing that separates them are their racial identity. For me as a fan of both I’m just self aware and critical of their actions and focus on the music, but whenever that criticism of them comes on, I just let them get all the lashes they get bc it’s well deserved. But I’ve had this thought for years for a lot of artists the more I’ve become more political consciousness starting my preteen years through doing research and think piece articles online, I felt this way about the likes of lady Gaga and Harry styles for a hot minute, (back in my HS years I use to get hated for saying someone like Janelle monae is the true artist and political activist that Gaga wanted to be) and even artists that I love like Taylor and Beyoncé, as well as solange, Jay z, Kendrick Lamar, FKA twigs, Kanye west (before he came a bigot), Rihanna etc. but I just listen to the music and keep it moving I don’t put them on this high political pedestal as I used to,

    This is pretty much what I also think of the "rebel" movements in the past ~10 years. I'm probably biased because I was an emo as a kid and it all seemed so much more raw back then (even tho it is frowned upon both today and back when it was going on, for different things tho).
    I know this might be judged but I also think that the whole "boomers were left and then they turned to right" may be because they saw these things as well. I see the exact same thing happening to gen X (boomer lite) and older millennials

    • @annabeinglazy5580
      @annabeinglazy5580 Місяць тому +1

      I think some of it might also tie into them coming from a different time and Background and when "the left" changed they remained stuck. My parents are good examples. My dass "lefty" Phase revolved around economics and little Else. He Had some awareness that sexism is Bad, but that pretty much ended with "Well, divorce is legal, wives can get alimony, and unequal pay is technically illegal now, what more do you want". Anti racism to him is "we dont do segregation". Racism to him is a Personal evil rather than a system. My mum considers herself Feminist but her feminism is Kind of Stuck in the 2nd Wave. It's all about competing with men, being Like men, disdaining anything feminine. It doesnt reflect on those points at all.
      Theyre my main Motivation to remain self aware and Not get stuck in my current view of all of These Things. To keep learning. Cuz i dont want to wake Up one day and find that im shouting at some Kids just because i dont know their terminology.

    This is a very valuable point you're bringing up that conflates our culture of comodifying aesthetics and the performative transgression. I think that rebellion in itself can't be just for the sake of striking against societal problems but it's also something personal to the individual, which I think would be what these celebrities are trying (and failing) to emulate because there's no real bite to their 'rebellion', there's no desire to break free from upholding fake images but rather sell the illusion of 'transgression'.

Practically everything is a symptom of how society is organised in one way or another, and a lot of aforementioned critiques leave an impression of "missing the forest for the trees" e.g. focusing on Cyrus as a counter to Siwa when they're actually both just two adjacent trees in the same forest. I like that you are willing to talk about the forest itself.
    I also think that is a great shirt!

    I think an aspect that is also overlooked in these fictional representations is temporality : the thing is, revolutionary acts don't always look like the flashy things you can see on TV. Sometimes it's about difficult conversations, ongoing support and solidarity. Things that look way less ""cool"" and take much more time than a big fight.
    It would be nice if there was just one big fight at the end of the movie and then the world is saved, but things are much more complicated than that.

    OMG this makes so much sense!!!
    People want to be rebellious because of the ‘aesthetic’. For example in Japan the whole point of Lolita fashion was to push back against the idea about femininity being for the male gaze....That is a cause. As well as Kawaii/ Harajuku fashion is used by young people to rebel against the social norms and the pressure society has on them. I have watched a lot of videos on Jojo’s rebrand...but you video in particular concentrates on what was the point of her changing her look with a cause. 🙂🙂🙂
