  • In this video we'll show you how to rekey a lock using the Kwikset lock and Kwikset Smartkey tool. Using Kwikset Smart key technology to rekey a lock saves time and money. It also gives you freedom to change keys or even use a temporary key for your existing lock set.
    To take advantage of this technology, you have too purchase Kwikset locks with the Smartkey features built into it.

    If you are wondering if your locks have the Kwikset smartkey technology, you need to have a small (1/8 inch) slot right next to the slot for your key. If you see that, then all you need is the Kwikset rekeying tool to rekey your locks.
    The procedure is pretty straight forward.
    1) insert the existing key in the lock.
    2) With the key in the vertical position firmly inset the rekey tool into the tiny slot and then remove the rekeying tool.
    3) pull the vertical key out and reinsert the new key.
    4) turn the new key 90 degrees counter clockwise.
    5) then turn the key back 90 degrees clockwise and see if the new key now in the vertical position can be removed.
    6) If the key can not be removed, the rekeying has been completed.
    7) Turn the key back counter clockwise to the horizontal position and remove the key.
    Success !
    It only take a few seconds to finish the task saving both time and money.

    So, what is to keep someone from walking up and rekeying your door from the outside? Perhaps with their own key. Then they just let themselves in.
    Thanks!

      Never mind. Obvious. You must have the original key to begin with!

    Where do you get the "new"/red key from??? Do you just get a random key or use a key you already have or does the new key with the smartkey tool kit???

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  Рік тому

      Hey tiw…,
      The red key is one I had from an existing lock. I wanted to change / rekey the new Kwikset lock to accept that old key ( the red key ).
      Hope that helps!

    I have a smart KEVO lock with key option. However, the KEVO was replaced with a new one, and the 🔑 does not work anymore. I tried the steps to rekey it, but it doesn't work. Any help will be appreciated

    Thanks for video. Quick question. I completed the first key and it works. How do I duplicate it with the remaining keys in packet?

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  2 роки тому

      Hey Zx7…,
      Not sure I understand. The locks in new lock package should work with the new lock right out of the gate. If you have a key to the old lock which you want to use with the new lock, you use the tool to change the new lock to accept the old key.
      Hope that makes sense.

    Thank you for the video. I just bought a new home and it came with this. Do I just go to Home Depot and tell them to make any key? Where does the new key come from?

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Patrick,
      Congrats on the new house!
      If the new house came with the kwikset lock, you can simply use the key in the box as your new key to the home. No need to rekey. The key that came with the lock is your new home key. In this video, the second key came from the original lock on the door to the house which we had been living in for some time. I was changing the lock.
      If your new house came with a couple of kwikset locks , say for 2 different doors into the house, you can simply choose one of new lock keys and rekey only one of the of the new locks with that key so one that one key works for both locks.
      I was just thinking - If your new house has a kwikset lock on the door already, you would need the little tool to put into the hole to reset the lock. If you don’t have the original box, the maybe Home Depot sells them? And if you don’t have an old key laying around you want to use, you can buy an another lock ( if you need it ) and use that key, or you could see if Home Depot sells random keys, or they could cut a new key for you. Or you could use a key from a parent or sibling - less fumbling for keys when you visit😀. Many options - hope one works.
      Does that make sense?
      Thanks for watching!

      @@Housebarons Thanks for the reply! So the new house came with the keys from the builder. Along with the Kwikset smartkey tool. I guess my only concern would be if anyone had made copies of these original keys. I am the first owner so the only one who had the keys prior were the builder and real estate agent. I was informed that I now have all the keys (four total) and they are all the same key. And then I have this smartkey tool.

      Hey Patrick,
      We’ve purchased a number of houses over the years - ALWAYS change the locks. It’s TOO EASY with the smart lock set up as well. You are right. Copies could always have been made.
      Enjoy your new home!!

      @@Housebarons thank you! I think my main question is, do I just go to home depot and tell them to make new keys and then do i use the tool to rekey to that new set of keys?

      Hey becca..,
      If no key works in the lock, maybe go and buy a replacement lock cylinder if Kwikset makes one…, take the old lock off and replace the cylinder. then restart the process to rekey.??
      Never had that issue… not fun!

    • @Housebarons

      Hey MsButterfly57,
      Then your lock is NOT a smartkey lock. Only locks equiped with that little hole are of the smartkey variety.

    you just have to wonder about how pick resistant the new smart lock is, there will probably be some hack to bypass the reset lock

      Sure- always have to be cautious of new tech.
      But the reset hole is inside - so if someone is inside, well… they’re free to load up your stuff already😬

      The reset hole is NOT on interior side and if your evil ex has a key still, you have to reset the lock before they do. They SHOULD put the reset hole inside the home and not out.
