I’m from India. We have an old traditional hockey culture. After a debacle of 4 decades, we finally won our 12th Olympic hockey medal. Our women too came close to win first medal. All these years, we were in awe of Dutch hockey. They have a great hockey culture supporting families to attend matches. Excellent Infra and equally good skilful players make them the all time best.
It's pretty much the same here in Australia! Hockey is one of the most played amateur sports. We have more dry turf here though, because water is much more precious in our climate.

Because if someone have success in a discipline, learn of him, but pride people, just say bad things, and do the same mistake all the time. In Northern Ireland I’m in the under 13 team and we play from sept-December then January-March with only a two week break off. We also train two times a week then a match on the weekend

No question that the Dutch are very good however, many countries have a GREAT field hockey culture and traditions! In my country of 🇦🇷 field hockey is the most popular sport for women of ALL AGES ranging from 5 to 50 years old! In fact our female national team which are called the LEONAS have beaten the Dutch in a World Cup! As for our men football is by far the most popular sport however our men are quite good at field hockey as well! Btw we did produce one of the greatest players in women's field hockey! Her name is Luciana Aymar! Greetings!
The family-oriented hockey culture in the Low Countries is amazing, although it used to be (and still is) somewhat for the better offs of society. In South-Korea, they have almost no hockey fields, and much less than 2000 people today playing the sport, mostly as part of some school curriculum. Crazy to imagine how they managed to reach the Sydney 2000 Men's finals, losing to the Netherlands on strokes, while the Korean women also took silver at the Altanta games of 1996. Unfortunately, that lack of hockey culture means that they will probably never ever be able to emulate those results again, and it even looks like hockey might even disappear completely there.
I wish America had better hockey culture for guys, I've fallen in love with the sport, but it is so hard to find places to play at a decent level. Really sucks.
Dutch has totally 2,55,000 players in their country but in India each state has 2,55,000 players.we have 29 such states. Very competative hockey playing country.
Even then we could not produce good results , no comparison with the Netherlands 🤫 only Australia and germany are close to them... Because there both men and women hockey team produces good results.

The low countries are a hockey paradise with a high number of clubs on small territories. The Dutch lead the way with their very professional approach of sports in general, and hockey in particular. The Belgians followed their example, with succes. But the dominance of the Dutch women is just too phenomenal and other nations are still years away of catching up with them. The playing ground is much more level with the men, where each of the top 5 teams have the potential to beat each other. Belgian men were twice lucky to win titles with shoutouts (WC 2018, Olympics 2020).
Like I play for university team in Wales and we play twice a week, BUCS on Wednesdays and Welsh league on Saturdays. We always smash the teams on Saturdays due to the age difference and ability levels but yet we regularly get smashed during BUCS due to our training capabilities being so low as there is no real welsh hockey pitches that are a decent quality. Like for a standard BUCS game or Saturday league game at home we have to travel an hour to play on a decent enough astro compared to the 3g pitch we've been "blessed" with that is on uni site

India just beat Netherlands in a 2 match FIH pro league competition and Belgium is current no 1. I guess there are more good teams now to challenge Dutchs. Hope they take it a notch above.
GB hockey fan here. I'm not surprised by any of this because I know a family who play for Surbiton HC and have toured in the Netherlands. One question, how does this compare with the Dutch football culture? Do you have to compete with football clubs for the most athletic young people or isn't that a problem?

Field Hockey is popular , but it does not reach much following outside the clubs and families playing. So it remains very much a family sport culture (The same with an under the radar sport like Korfball ...) Many people who may never have played football follow the sport. Even with basketball (the NL federation has only 50k players) there are people who don't play it may follow the sport .

We don't have this in the UK, which is why i think hockey is small 😔

(Some) schools or universities have them as well. Clubs sometimes privately own, if they can afford to build them. Football is so much more profitable / popular though. If a council / municipality thinks about a pitch, they are more interested (i suspect) in one which is good for football (which means bad / useless for hockey). This i guess is because they went to guarantee bookings. The demand is there for football facilities. The FA (football association) has plenty of money as well to help with building facilities. The sad thing is - and I've read some recent examples - is public pitches are sometimes good for hockey but then they decide to change them to be better for football. Hockey is just not really supported so well in England 😔

We are still not the team we once were but we still are good ...we recently beat Germany 6-1 in march..And that's impressive considering how good Germany are .. Its just that.. Field hockey in the UK is certainly better than in USA but absolutely nothing like in The Netherlands. Though most clubs do have club houses, bars and plenty of drinking!
Won mostly in the very early days of the Olympics and not since 1980. True, it was an impressive result, but now there's a more competitive international atmosphere. Still, I like India for the fact that they, too, care so much about this sport.
I came to watch this as an American because I cannot support a bunch of anti-American feminist whiners from my own country, but I can so much be a fan of patriotic Dutch athletes who haven't rejected basic virtues like how you play and live is more important than winning and whining.
Its a very good system.But requirs huge money investment which is not possible in India.Still we are producing world-class players.Our environment is also very hot and humid still it can't stop us from playing Hockey.
It's not neccesarily a summer sport. We have a national summer break that lasts around 6 weeks in the middle of summer. Then quickly after that every team starts training again and starts to play matches in september. Once it's December the indoor league starts and field matches won't start until march. Then from march to june the league is played again and in july the summer break will start again. But there are a lot of clubs that organize special events (e.g. every Wednesday in my case) in the summer break for everyone to meet at the club and play together at all different ages and levels

You need to figure out in what area you want to play and the google sites of the clubs in that area. If you can't find any maybe google maps can help. On the sites you can often send an e-mail to try to apply for the club If you want to play in a high league you need to make sure the men's team play at the very least 1st class (1ste klasse)
@@tectorama Most clubs will have at least one water-based pitch, but there are still loads of clubs in smaller towns or smaller clubs in general that just have one or two sand-based pitches
@@obiwankenobi623 Here in the UK I believe it is still mostly sand. As I expect for the smaller clubs, they are easier to maintain. Speaking to someone who has played on both, they don't seem to think there is that much difference to the way the ball runs. I don't know about the pitches used by the senior leagues, or for Internationals.
@@tectorama I have played on both types and I will always sigh if we need to play on sand. Water-based pitches are way nicer to play on, I feel like I have more control. 3D skills are way more viable too and your stick won't erode nearly as fast as on sand (at least I believe so, can't confirm 100%)
All that water used for the hockey pitches is irrelevant because it rains for 60% of the time in The Netherlands. They've got more fresh water than they know what to do with it...

I came to watch this as an American because I cannot support a bunch of anti-American feminist whiners from my own country, but I can so much be a fan of patriotic Dutch athletes who haven't rejected basic virtues like how you play and live is more important than winning and whining.
Its a very good system.But requirs huge money investment which is not possible in India.Still we are producing world-class players.Our environment is also very hot and humid still it can't stop us from playing Hockey.

Depending which club. The one in amsterdam forest are around €500 per year
Did you say that hockey is a summer sport in Holland? In New Zealand, hockey is a winter sport, played in winter
It's not neccesarily a summer sport. We have a national summer break that lasts around 6 weeks in the middle of summer. Then quickly after that every team starts training again and starts to play matches in september. Once it's December the indoor league starts and field matches won't start until march. Then from march to june the league is played again and in july the summer break will start again.
But there are a lot of clubs that organize special events (e.g. every Wednesday in my case) in the summer break for everyone to meet at the club and play together at all different ages and levels

You need to figure out in what area you want to play and the google sites of the clubs in that area. If you can't find any maybe google maps can help. On the sites you can often send an e-mail to try to apply for the club
If you want to play in a high league you need to make sure the men's team play at the very least 1st class (1ste klasse)

@@tectorama Most clubs will have at least one water-based pitch, but there are still loads of clubs in smaller towns or smaller clubs in general that just have one or two sand-based pitches
@@obiwankenobi623 Here in the UK I believe it is still mostly sand. As I expect for the smaller clubs, they are easier to maintain. Speaking to someone who has played on both, they don't seem to think there is that much difference to the way the ball runs.
I don't know about the pitches used by the senior leagues, or for Internationals.
@@tectorama I have played on both types and I will always sigh if we need to play on sand. Water-based pitches are way nicer to play on, I feel like I have more control. 3D skills are way more viable too and your stick won't erode nearly as fast as on sand (at least I believe so, can't confirm 100%)
All that water used for the hockey pitches is irrelevant because it rains for 60% of the time in The Netherlands. They've got more fresh water than they know what to do with it...

@@nikolaimaharaj2319 India and Pakistan's performance in hockey is a far cry from what they used to be back in the day. India used to win consecutive gold medals at the Olympics. That's miles ahead when compared to the present situation. I'm not sure about the team rankings though
