I remember watching Boy Meets World every week on TGIF. I guess I never really noticed how quickly it went back and forth between comedy and drama because of that. I've never tried binging this show, but I can imagine that the whiplash becomes much more prominent when you're watching episodes every half-hour rather than every week.
Boy Meets World is one of the best TGIF series of all time. I grew up watching this show. I like how the teachers; especially Feeny and Turner; are portrayed as mentors rather than antagonists like in most other shows. I've always had mixed feelings about Eric. He started out as the typical older brother who's all about being cool and getting girls. Then in later seasons he turned into this very goofy character. The relationships Cory has with Shawn and Topanga are strong throughout. How they're always there for each other.
In a way, the most famous person to come from this show is the one who plays Rachel, Maitland Ward, who went on to do adult films. The most famous person to come from its sequel series Girl Meets World, Sabrina Carpenter, comes off as the kind of person who would watch one of Maitland's movies.
@@austinburras2993 Shawn was the easier character to write for because he was the more compelling of the main boys, Cory was the everyman and Shawn had the more difficult upbringing.
Apparently, Friedle said he and the writers didn't really "find" Eric until the episode where he's tested against a mouse and the mouse succeeds MONUMENTALLY. From that point on, he and the writers went no holds barred. But in many ways, because they did lesser serious episodes with Eric after that point, when they did focus on a serious storyline with him (the episode where he and Cory are cleaning out their garage and have their biggest blow up fight, with both of them ending up in the ER), it really hit home for me.
@@van8ryanA good thing about Eric was even after he became the main comic relief, he was still able to be serious when necessary. I like the storyline about how he failed to get into college and he and Corey go on a summer road trip and while at their last stop, he contemplates staying and not going back home because he doesn't want to be back where he's the loser who couldn't get into any college.
This is another example of Will Friedle being a treasure. Makes him being the voice of Ron Stoppable super fitting and the voice of Batman Beyond wildly surprisingz
This show kind of came out of nowhere for me. Growing up, I watched TGIF RELIGIOUSLY. Started with Full House, then there were things like Step by Step and Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper - every year there were new shows added to the lineup. So Boy Meets World was just another one of those. But this one stuck around. And it stayed. And it was awesome. After Full House ended, I kept watching TGIF for BMW. I even watched it on Disney Channel reruns. It’s one of my all-time favorites, and I still love it. Cory and Shawn’s friendship is one of the all-time greatest in fiction - in the same breath as Frodo and Sam.
I do love the Underage Drinking episode. Funny how you don't see Eric in the episode at all. Jack sees Shawn with a beer in their dorm room. Gives this big speech about how Shawn shouldn't drink and called their dad an ugly drunk. So who bought the beer, was it Eric's?
True! He only did the movies I think! I also wish he did the other one Saturday Morning shows! Aside from Doug as the original Nickelodeon version is superior than the bastardized version that Disney did.
There a similar scene in home improvement involving tim Allen with a buzz lightyear doll and Jonathan Taylor Thomas with a Simba toy since Tim voiced buzz while Jonathan voiced young Simba at the time home improvement was running and I think there was a nod to the Santa clause as well, I know home improvement was referenced in the Santa clause
This show was great because it appealed to everybody. The adults with Cory’s parents, kids growing up with Cory and Shawn, young adults reaching 18 with Eric and teachers with Turner and Feeny. The show sings a lot from middle school to high school to college at the heart of the the show has always been Cory and Shawn’s friendship and how it could stand after Cory got married.
Exactly. I can't even once recall a time when Eric bullied Cory. Teased him a little sure but even that was very light compared to other sitcom older brothers.
I really liked that in the Justice League Unlimited episode Hawk & Dove they had them played by Fred Savage and Jason Hervey, the brothers from the Wonder Years
It’s easy to look at the mess Disney is today and write off the company, but it also has a lot of gems in its past like this one. Disney is not messianic, they’re prone to bombs and corporate douchebaggery as any other, but in spite of that, there are shows like this that managed to get there. Speaking of which, Dave the Barbarian, if ever there was an unfairly underrated cartoon.
Boy meets world really did grow up with the viewers. Cory and Topanga having a disastrous attempt at their first time on prom night makes giggle to this day. And that last Iine ....perfect
This show was my 90s sitcom of my childhood. I was a few years behind the characters and it definitely gave me a way exaggerated expectations of high school and young adulthood lol. But glad you got to go through this show that epitomizes my childhood! 😊
I wonder if the flip-flopping episodes were easier to digest when it came out just because back then you would've only seen one episode per week (or so), and not binge whole seasons at a time. The dramatic and heavy-hitting moments remind me of Futurama, which is another show I can go from laughing at so hard I can't breathe to ugly-crying even in the same episode.
Love the chemistry of every relationship on this show. I dont remember Mr. Turner ever interacting with Cory's parents, but when he had the accident it is like they were involved woth each other beyond Shawn's situation. Also, Kid Gets Aquainted with Universe is my favorite
I also missed out on this show when it was new. I was more into cartoons than live TV as a kid. The way Doug described the switching from comedy to drama makes it sound like Mood Whiplash* : The Show. *Thanks, TVTropes!
This show really helped me deal with some issues I had been having after my father passed away. This show had great comedy and wonderful characters, and as a kid, I never really realised just how relatable the problems that I faced growing up were very similar to those of Cory and his friends. Boy Meets World is definitely one of my favourites.
Yes I love this show. My favorite show of all time. I was not a 90s kid but this show really was beneficial to watch when I was growing up. As I am in my mid 20s this show still is funny and hits home.
@@devonchafe2764 I would argue giving Shawn his own "Happily Ever After" does count. The guy deserved love and happiness after everything we saw him go through and being able to give a kid with a similar background to himself the kind of life that Turner wanted to give him was a perfect send-off.
I used to think the show overdid it on how many problems all the kids had, especially Shawn. But thinking about it now it is really cool that the show tackles as many problems as most kids would go through like losing parents, alcohol, discrimination, etc Even in the abuse episode it’s not something happening to any of the main characters, it’s happening to a girl they knew and they wanted to help her.
This was my absolute favourite show growing up. I used to watch it basically every day it came on, so I've watched it front to back at least 3 times. Just had a ton of fantastic and relatable characters, and it's really enjoyable having them go through all these different types of problems as they went from middle school to college.
My favorite performance through the whole entire show is probably Rider Strong He does such a good job. I’m surprised he hasn’t been in more movies or shows after boy meets world with the exception of cabin fever, he should be in more movies and shows he’s a really great actor.
Firstly, Fenny was the father figure all children deserved. My son is named Vinny and I do the Fenny calls with his name ALL THE TIME. Second, my fav episode as an adult is the college era one where Corey is all bent out of shape about Co-ed dorms. At one point this hunky guy shows up in nothing but a towel and Corey says "My gf is in there" and this dude makes the dorkiest "yeah" noise. That guy is now my friend. He's 2 youngest kids are friend with my kids. I am highly entertained by this since I grew up watching the show
This is easily one of my favorite TV shows. I think the way the episode tones switches from funny to dramatic is actually completely justified. One moment we have a happy moment in our lives and then another is the complete opposite. The characters are very relatable and I can even relate to myself as Cory. There are some of the best things about Boy Meets World. For anyone who has not seen this show yet, definitely check it out.
Mr. Feeny is my second favorite William Daniels characters right after John Adams in 1776. He has a charismatic voice and fatherly vibe to his performance.

I was born in the early 90s. The weird thing about that was that BMW was standard Friday night viewing as a kid but I didn't really "get" the show until watching reruns as a tween in the early 00s. Then as as an adult, there were nuances that made this show work that are still hard to believe were just completely abandoned when the sequel show was created.
Really looking forward to hearing what you think about The Ghost and Molly McGee, I think it actually has plenty in common with Boy Meets World, but they don’t constantly do super serious stuff, and it balances it all out really nicely.
The characters disappearing and not coming back was something I always accepted as just part of the world the show was set in 1) because the show was totally self aware of it "Hey, Mr. Turner, wait up!" 😂 And 2) I assumed it's set in the same universe as Sabrina the Teenage Witch (Eric is literally with Sabrina at the end of one episode, and Cory finds Salem wandering around school in another, so...) which also had characters (Jenny, Valerie, Miles, Dreama) leave and not come back or get mentioned again. Sabrina also sort of acknowledged this in a cheeky way when one of Sabrina's workmates was like "Hey maybe your aunts will come back" and she goes, "No they're not coming back..." 😅
This show reminds me so much of my own relationships with my best friend, or friends ... How we stand up for each other no matter what, but sometimes we both got pissed off with something that the other did, or some bad attitude, but it didn't matter at all, cause in the end, we were kids growing up together, and in the end we would always hold each other's back. And that is pretty much Cory and Shawn's relationship as best friends. I also think all the characters are likeable and relatable, but these 2 kids is what makes the series to be both, funny as hell and super dramatic. And I loved watching it growing up, and I still like to see some of the best moments once in a while.
I think the chemistry with the cast is what made the show shine the most to me when I was a kid. If it was any other cast of actors it prob wouldnt have worked so well.
I grew up with this show. I never felt I connected to my peers as well as I connected to the characters. They helped me get through rough time in my life.
Makes sense bc I was born in 89 I was too young to watch the show when it was on the air but in 2002 and 2003 when it was in reruns I really enjoyed it and I was the same age as Cory in the start of the series.
Among its virtues, the show could be Deadpool-level in the meta jokes. In the S5 finale when they graduate HS, Minkus suddenly shows up after 4 seasons being absent and he says he's just been "on the other side of the school." (To which Shawn responds, "We don't go there.") And then Minkus waves offscreen and shouts, "Hey, Mr. Turner! Wait up!" Even the emotional final scene had a great meta moment when Corey says, "Come on, Mr. Feeney, you haven't talked to another student in like eight years!"
This was one of my favorite shows growing up (born in 82). I even watched Girl Meets World when it was on, mostly to see what was going on with the BMW characters.

The original story and the original characters really are what truly enchanted me to this series and it will forever be a treasured memory for sure! Nice to see other fans who respect it across the comments. I’ve also met Will Friedle who played Eric. Super nice guy and great cartoon voice actor as well!
I'm a 2000s kid and really liked this show when it aired on ABC Family (Now called FreeForm) and they still air a few episodes this year. I then rewatched the entire show on Disney+ when I was in High School, all seasons 1 - 7 and I still enjoy it even today! The characters, cast, and the jokes in this still makes me laugh out loud so hard and get emotional in the Dramatic scenes. My favorite episodes were "And then there was Shawn", "The Happiest Show on Earth", and "We'll Have a Good Time Then", the last one made me tear a lot. This is one of my favorite Sitcoms ever behind The Big Bang Theory.
If I recall, Mr. Feeny's actor only agreed to the role IF he was allowed to play a positive role model that actually taught his students instead of the usual bumbling idiot or burned out alcoholic

Sabrina Carpenter would be such a fun gal pal
I was a little surprised Maitland Ward didn't return to Girl Meets World from what I've seen with Trina McGee who played Angela
I never thought he’d talk about this
Me neither, but it was certainly worth the wait. I hope that he'll eventually cover "Girl Meets World."
@@trinaq same!!
According to pod meets world, if you watch a show, you'll see a lot of episodes are focused on shawnn, so most of the time it's a shawnshow
Agreed!
This was my favorite show growing up. The best of the TGIF lineup.
So who bought the beer, was it Eric's?
good question
I'm a 90s kid but I missed Boy Meets World too, I watched it over the last 2 years.
Now we wait for a Disneycember review for Recess.
True! He only did the movies I think! I also wish he did the other one Saturday Morning shows! Aside from Doug as the original Nickelodeon version is superior than the bastardized version that Disney did.
I wish Doug would watch the show it was a certified classic!
Eric Mattews: I’m Batman
It's funny cause Will Freidle played Terry McGinnis on Batman Beyond!
And Ron Stoppable!
@@dangurney1042 he's better than the version from that terrible live action remake movie!
@@clintbrewI hope Doug reviews the the first Santa Clause and 2 as the NC! He did the third. Maybe he can cover that awful legacy sequel show too
The podcast, "pod meets world" really sheds a lot of light on the show.
Highly reccomend
For me, it was "Boy meets pot".
One of the best sitcoms from my childhood growing up during the 90s. It's a shame what happened to the sequel series
Yeah. It's a real letdown.
9:44 Man, remember a time when a class only had 12 kids in it?
I remember when there was 50 kids in my class
Never happened but Saved by the Bell would have classes with 6 to 8 kids
This show was great because it appealed to everybody. The adults with Cory’s parents, kids growing up with Cory and Shawn, young adults reaching 18 with Eric and teachers with Turner and Feeny. The show sings a lot from middle school to high school to college at the heart of the the show has always been Cory and Shawn’s friendship and how it could stand after Cory got married.
Doug, the comparison to Saved By The Bell is great.
1:26 I don't think Eric can be classified as a bully.
Exactly. I can't even once recall a time when Eric bullied Cory. Teased him a little sure but even that was very light compared to other sitcom older brothers.
I remember Watching Boy Meets World Friday Nights on ABC
Me too.
@@lovetolovefairytales I miss TGIF so much!! Freeform isn't as good
@@kdusel1991 are you confusing TGIF with ABC family? Because that's what Freeform replaced, and I promise you they're not the same thing.
@@lovetolovefairytalesI'm not. I know they're different
Our boy dave does not get nearly the love he deserves. Chuckles the silly piggy, all time greatest villains
Boy meets world really did grow up with the viewers. Cory and Topanga having a disastrous attempt at their first time on prom night makes giggle to this day. And that last Iine ....perfect
I still stand by that the father’s acting when he finds out his newborn son might not make it is some of the best tv show acting I’ve ever seen.
I absolutely loved this show as a kid. And I still go back and watch certain episodes sometimes. It held up to me.
This show was my 90s sitcom of my childhood. I was a few years behind the characters and it definitely gave me a way exaggerated expectations of high school and young adulthood lol. But glad you got to go through this show that epitomizes my childhood! 😊
Same! I grew up right around the same time it was airing!
"Mr. Feeney? Mr. Feeney! Hey! FEENEY! FEE-HE-HEENY!!"
im sorry but nobody has the same stupidity as Eric. He's in his own world the last couple of seasons. lol
Which is even funnier when you consider he didn't start that way.
I had a friendship like Cory and Shawn in highschool. Of course, we're still friends now after almost 20 years ❤ I appreciate it more now.
One of the reasons I love this show is because I'm basically Cory. Both the good and the bad.
"And Then There Was Shawn" is still one of the best Halloween specials ever
This show really helped me deal with some issues I had been having after my father passed away. This show had great comedy and wonderful characters, and as a kid, I never really realised just how relatable the problems that I faced growing up were very similar to those of Cory and his friends. Boy Meets World is definitely one of my favourites.
This is my favorite teen sitcom on ABC, I miss TGIF back when sitcoms were actually funny!
Same!!
The last scene still makes me cry. I don't do that with pop culture much, but that scene is beautiful.
Fun fact: the guy that plays the teacher, Mr. Feeney. Played John Adams in the musical, 1776.
And KITT on Knight Rider.
William Daniels is talented
SIT DOWN, JOHN!

@@chasehedges6775 my favorite episode is the scream parody!

Yes I love this show. My favorite show of all time. I was not a 90s kid but this show really was beneficial to watch when I was growing up. As I am in my mid 20s this show still is funny and hits home.
Wonder if he's also gonna cover the sequel spin-off series, Girl Meet World?
I mean that shows only accomplishment is jumpstarting Sabrina Carpenter's career
@@devonchafe2764 I would argue giving Shawn his own "Happily Ever After" does count. The guy deserved love and happiness after everything we saw him go through and being able to give a kid with a similar background to himself the kind of life that Turner wanted to give him was a perfect send-off.
@@Lrbearclaw I agree, and there's also a case to be made with how BMW worked with its tropes and GMW didn't balance it as well,
I just found out my wife Sabrina Carpenter got her start on that show
As someone who loved the show in Middle School, the only lasting cultural impact Girl Meets World is that godawful autism episode.
I watched this show when I was somewhere around 14-16 and I remember loving it! One of these days I definitely have to give it a rewatch!
This was my absolute favourite show growing up. I used to watch it basically every day it came on, so I've watched it front to back at least 3 times. Just had a ton of fantastic and relatable characters, and it's really enjoyable having them go through all these different types of problems as they went from middle school to college.
The BEST coming of age show. Period
Agreed! This was the Wonder Years for us 90's/2000's babies!
Not even close
The Wonder Years was a better show. But, I like Boy Meets World, too.
The episode where Mr Turner gets in the accident will forever live in my head.
Same here.💯💯
I'LL SAY THIS, my friend, a gen z Nigerian boy, fell in love with this sitcom form the late 90s, that should say a lot about how good it was.
Thanks for reminding me of this show. I still remember the killer Halloween episode, the roller coaster, and the last scene, among a few others.
Mr. Feeny is my second favorite William Daniels characters right after John Adams in 1776. He has a charismatic voice and fatherly vibe to his performance.
He's one of the best characters on the show!!
I'd put Mr. Feeny right up there with KITT from Knight Rider.

7 cats & mices

FIVE WOLVERINEEES!
4 symbiote suits

2 mutant team ups
And a tasty Big Kahuna Burger
Eric’s hilarious 😂
I was born in the early 90s. The weird thing about that was that BMW was standard Friday night viewing as a kid but I didn't really "get" the show until watching reruns as a tween in the early 00s. Then as as an adult, there were nuances that made this show work that are still hard to believe were just completely abandoned when the sequel show was created.
The first Disney sitcom he has done
This show is so insanely cozy to me
I think the chemistry with the cast is what made the show shine the most to me when I was a kid. If it was any other cast of actors it prob wouldnt have worked so well.
I grew up with this show. I never felt I connected to my peers as well as I connected to the characters. They helped me get through rough time in my life.
My Favorite TV Show of all time
Makes sense bc I was born in 89 I was too young to watch the show when it was on the air but in 2002 and 2003 when it was in reruns I really enjoyed it and I was the same age as Cory in the start of the series.
same
This is probably my favorite sitcom of all time. I was a few years younger than the main character so it was definitely for kids around my age.
Speaking of the lows of lows, this show kept me company when I nearly died. I was watching it in my hospital bed.
And this is why I'm gonna rewatch it next year cuz it's one of my all time favorite shows
This is one of my favorite sitcoms I grew up with it and I definitely think you're right about the age thing
Turner! Wait up!"
Even the emotional final scene had a great meta moment when Corey says, "Come on, Mr. Feeney, you haven't talked to another student in like eight years!"
Pretty dumb
This was one of my favorite shows growing up (born in 82). I even watched Girl Meets World when it was on, mostly to see what was going on with the BMW characters.
Easily one of the all-time greats.
