Kids stumble frequently and rarely get hurt but often look to adults to see how they should react. Often they wouldn't have cried except that the parent acted like the fall was a big deal and the kid starts crying in reaction to the parent's actions, rather than the actual fall.

I grew up in Orlando and had a bunch friends that worked at DW. They all said it was an awful job but they all had some really sweet stories about stuff like this.

? Someone doesn't have to relate to someone else's pain to feel bad they are in pain and there's nothing inherently condescending about sympathy. There'd be some argument for pity, depending on the reasons for it but again it wouldn't be inherent. And the ability to be emphatic has no direct correlation with someone's ability to heal from their own trauma. An empathetic person probably has a more difficult time self-healing as they feel emotions more deeply.

I'm not saying this is true in all cases, but I think this argument works for this one.
