- MultiVersus, the Cartoon Network and Warner Bros. platform fighter inspired by Super Smash Bros, is in danger. The game recently hit a record low in the number of players, dropping by more than 99% less than a year after its release. Will MultiVersus manage to survive the recent trend of online games shutting down?
At first glance, MultiVersus seemed like a great competitor for the Super Smash Bros franchise. With Cartoon Network properties like Regular Show and Adventure Time, as well as other Warner Bros. properties like Scooby-Doo and Game of Thrones playing a role here, there's a character for everyone! However, several problems have led to an insanely low amount of players keeping up with MultiVersus. It's not a great sign for the future.

I think people don't have enough time for live service games anymore, which is why Multiversus was declining. Plus, there's something about an old game you can come back to and enjoy years later, but you can't do that with live service games because they aren't the same game you left, if it's even there at all. This is also another reason why I prefer single-player experiences way more!

The game has some hidden lore mentioning an entity known as "The Nothing" being the cause for the different WB properties colliding with each other. A lot of people speculate this Nothing is referring to the main villain from The Never-Ending Story which makes sense not only for the entity sharing the same name but also coming from a WB property. Unfortunately, the Nothing has not physically appeared in Multiverses yet and if the game is going to keep declining then I guess we will never see the Nothing in the game...
If I had a nickel for every time a video game had a benevolent being that brings WB properties together, I would have two nickels.

As a fan of fighting games, you need a good constant schedule of new content to keep players around but at the same time, this heavy push for esports is hurting the genre as seen with games like Nickelodeon All Star Brawl, MVC infinite, Street Fighter 5(in its first 2 years), Dead or Alive 6, and Dissidia NT Final Fantasy
Don't forget SSB, MK & Tekken. Yes they need to keep adding new content like new characters, new map/area, new mechanics, new movesets, and balancing. If they stopped doing that they will die faster than devs/fanbase thought since in the end the mainstream players is the one keeping the game big & alive. If they fail to appeal, they would be gone a long time ago.
Yes its hurting them, make already good mechanics and actually fair keep more simplified and eventually thrown away what's unique about them slowly. But in order to keep relevant they need to do this to keep the mainstream playerbases.

Yes ty for bringing up mvci. That spinoff game is dead and was dead a long time ago. Even when first released, not even the payed wall DLCs helped save their game. And what made mvci even worse is they chewed out the popular marvel franchise X-Men.

What I think ended up becoming the biggest culprit was the whole fall out from the Warner Bros/Discovery merger mess.

I haven’t played in 2 months but this makes me sad, I really loved the adventure time side of this game and the OST is really really good
Its not just Multiversus. There is an oversaturation of Live Service games and everyone only has so much time to devote to a game/games. Unless you got a well polished or super engaging game, chances are its not long for this world. Looks like the Live Service model may be on its way out. For some of us who miss when games were about having fun and not having to open your wallet any time you wanted to get somewhere in it, its certainly not going to be missed.
Most fighting games are live services, though. We just don't call them that. We're going to buy Street Fighter 6 fully knowing the game will get consistent balance patches and new characters. That's exactly what a love service is, no? Supporting a game by buying its new content so they can make more content is the definition of live service. Fighting games especially are known for forming dedicated fan bases despite this, yet Multiversus failed to do so. imo, people aren't tired of live services, they're tired of bland, soulless games. There is just absolutely nothing charming about Multivurses. Everything from the art style to the music is so boring and generic. Fighting games live and die on their asthetics, and Multiversus failed to do so. Instead, it just feels like a purely corporate product made to try and cash grab at the fighting game audience. It didn't work. $20 for single character skins for a FTP fighting game is insane when I can spend the same amount in Street Fighter 5 and get a pack of multiple detailed character costumes.
When you kill off mod support, you pretty much lose the traction of what makes the game special…

funny enough that's actually when the game started dying. as soon as they cut mods off on August 21st 2022 the player count went down to and still hovers at 30% on steam 2 and a half weeks after they did that
Nah you can’t blame them for that one, it’s a free to play game so the skins and stuff were the only way Warner Bros was making money 💰 off the game. Allowing modding would allow people to just get free mods of the skins to avoid paying for them.
How does modding make the game special?
Smash had it's last true update over a year ago and it stays winning. I found the problem with multi verses is that the characters don't feel like extensions of themselves, more like a bare bones nod to a character. Smash has characters like K rool who not only has references in his moveset but his entire play style is based around his character

The issue I have with the Smash Ultimate excuse is that even that game had issues. It didn’t bring back every other mode, World of Light is garbage, most of the DLC characters weren’t what fans wanted, it removed the fun extras from Brawl and Smash 4, it didn’t have trophies… and the worst part about it is… they removed Poke Floats!

Multiversus is a unique game, but I think people jumped off it due to the hype wearing down. It's a shame because games like these don't come all that often.

None of the characters were actually pay to unlock, sure there were coins but those were earned by playing matches, basically free
@@FICUSULXD189 Microtransactions aren’t that bad if the game is already good on its own, (especially if it’s free, the devs need money somehow) but if you’re locking the game being fun or essential game elements behind them, then that’s where I draw the line. And cross the line is what so-called “Players First” did.

I really hope that more major characters gets added for season 3 along with a story mode in style of subspace emissary, more stages, and also new features to get all its players back into its normal state.

That is an unbelievable amount of content for the size of the games dev team and how little funding it gets. There will never be a story mode. They literally only dropped one character this season after dropping 4 in the last one. If they can only get one character out per season now, when the hell are they supposed to have the time to even make a story mode? That requires so much work, work that WB will not want to fund.

Neither do I, I love the passion that the devs put in this game, I can tell they care about their fanbase and their game. No matter what though, I'll remain optimistic and wait to see what they have to offer next!
The game was dead to me after I found out they weren’t adding and 90s/2000s reps. The present characters aren’t all that interesting.
The problem with live-service based games is that them shutting down is an inevitability. As with anything server-based.

One other thing I wonder about this game is how they'll handle Batman's voice clips. He was voiced by Kevin Conroy in this game but now that he's passed away, I don't know how the team will handle new voice lines for Batman.
My guess is that they’ll try to find a good voice imitator to carry Kevin’s Batman role. The developers haven’t said anything about what’s next for the character, but my guess is that they don’t want to do it out of respect for Kevin and the fans who grew up with his voice.
Well, we don’t know just HOW many lines he recorded for this game. For all we know there could be a huge stockpile of voice lines just waiting to be added

He probably recorded a lot of dialogue for the game’s story before he passed away. Hell, I think Multiversus’ roster were already planned from the start, and by that… I meant the leaks.
Smash Bros' popularity is so big (And absolutely deserved) That basically every platform fighting game is fighting against it by default

Because the other platform fighters lack the polish that Smash has. It's almost too perfect. While there are other amazing platform fighters like Rivals of Aether, and Brawlhalla, they still don't feel like Smash and is always visited back more often than any other.
Smash did have 20 years to perfect there game
not really a good argument because Smash is only available on the Switch. A more probable reason is that there isnt a lot demand for platform fighting games, Smash is just an exception not the rule.

Even with the first game, the formula was already perfected. There are many modern platform fighters that doesn't feel right, or probably plays way worse than the original Smash Bros on N64. That's how good the polish is.

I played Multiversus like a month ago and stopped playing it because of the games always being, me (a level 1 player) vs a player who is like level 40… it didn’t feel fair at all, and now I realize why that was happening

Live service games aren't as popular now like how it was during the pandemic. But that's exactly why it's dying. More and more people are going back to pre pandemic lifestyle, so there's no need for those types of games anymore.

They can, and will definitely attract more attention, but it goes back down to it was before, or even worse. It's already been a trend since early to mid 2022.
I love Multuversus! It was one of my favorite games of 2022! I'd hate to see it see the same fate as games like Knockout City, I'd love for the developers to add more stages and characters.

I remember coming back to the game a couple of months ago, and man the combat is so weird and unfair. I was losing to people due to lag and my moves not even connecting when they should have. I am also not a fan of the floaty movement in the game.
I really hope this doesn't lead to the game's discontinuation. It has a lot to potential that I'd hate to not be realized.
for me it's the odd balance for the characters like how fast characters always do a lot of combo damage and how the heavy characters are damage sponges that can't do anything. the other problem for me was the low amount of in-game currency you can earn when playing and the huge reliance of gems. i mean most of the costumes need gems to earn.
if they fix these problems mainly the currency then i think it will do ok.
Just because nobody's playing it now doesn't necessarily mean it will shut down in the near future. Look at Fall Guys, that game was still being worked on when nobody was playing it. But I just hope the end isn't near. This game has given me a new interest for these franchises of my childhood that I never felt before.
Motivation is a key factor. That's probably why Fall Guys kept getting updates even though they were losing money when barely anyone was playing the game.
3 tips for them :
1) add new characters (which could bring hype)
2) it should have not been a free to playfrom the start, but a basic game and add characters as dlc (most people like the basic way of getting a game than that "free to play/Fortnite battlepass" kind of game that makes you spend lots of money for unlocking characters or SKINS)
3)make new gamemodes or smthing like that, new stuff to do.

@@julianbalenzano6432 because Fortnite has a huge team that works on the game while multiverses only has 20-50 employees. Ever since Fortnite success every studio has tried to do the live service model but the thing is not a lot of people are gonna put that much time into a game.

I haven't played MultiVersus but I'm equally as worried as everyone else
Why is dead game?
The only reason I initially stopped playing it was because my internet was broken, but the reason I haven’t gone back to it is because they haven’t added any characters since then that I actually want to try (I haven’t played since Stripe was added), and that there is no trophy or spirit collectable equivalent to make me actually want to play the game, as online play gets stale for me after a while tbh.
I played NASB over Multiversus because of how comfortable the mechanics were in Nick when Multiversus feels spammy and too tryhard
My only problem with Multiversus (besides having to pay actual money for costumes/variants) is how buggy and glitchy it is sometimes, whenever I go online to start up a match it just takes me back to the menu or just crashes all together. There's also some minor stuff like textures not loading in properly.
Maybe they should do something similar that Smite did where you pay to permanently unlock all current characters and future characters. Plus it would be nice if they added some of the old Cartoon Network characters like the Powerpuff girls, Rolf, characters from Xiaolin Showdown, and ect and also Hak Foo from Jackie Chan Adventures.
I just want Ben 10 and Scorpion, but Rolf would be hilarious!

I hate season passes so much and that’s why I ditched this game, and the worst part is you have to buy each character online with coins and the only way to get coins requires you to win against players who’ve played since the beta, and no newer players can get anywhere.

It hurts to see how the game is doing now, it’s like what happen with Nickelodeon All Star brawl. They gotta add more characters and modes to keep the players Around. Maybe Mordecai, Rigby, Samurai Jack, Scorpion and more.
They need to release more content, like new fighters and stages. That's the only thing that'll keep this game going. We do have, after all, some extra characters and music in the game files.
They have been releasing fighters with the seasons, from Rick and Morty to Gizmo and Stripe to even Marvin the Martian and Black Adam, but sadly, the releases have been far between each other.
This game can’t die, it has so much potential and so many characters to be added in like Spongebob, R2D2 and maybe even some Jurassic park/world characters

My theory is that the reason the game died is because of the lack of communication with the community and also the lack of updates. Its really sad to see this game go because it had so much potential, its like the case with marvels avengers where it got mishandled by the developers.
Honestly, that's pretty much the case. Sure, we only JUST got the Valentines Day event, but, yeah, there hasn't been a lot of content recently. I think this is pretty much due to how, everything that was released in S1, was done, or near completion at that point, like the characters. And because of that, people were expecting content to come out often. But, because developing characters for the game takes a few months, according to Tony, that's why S2 only has Marvin as it's newly introduced character

I played Multiversus for the first time in a few months earlier this month. When I saw that I was still in season 2, I thought it was a me problem. First, I updated the game, and, when it persisted, I determined that it was a glitch. This explains a lot.

I have never played multiversus but did seeing videos about it. My opinion on the game is like a "ok" or almost a "good job" tbh.

I have a feeling gandalf and other characters were meant to added within all this space by got cut for different reasons.
One of the first thing they need to do it’s tone infinitely down the character grinding so you don’t need to play 5 months no stop to unlock a single character, that would help a lot

Multiversus was destined to this fate from the start. The game was very unbalanced and the hitboxes were horrible, and when they tried to fix these problems they made the game worse. That's the fate of every "smash clone"

Multiversus was so hyped before it came out I remember I wanted to play it so badly
I also would wanna point out the drama with Justin roiland as well, that could indefinitely caused some people to drive away from the game
Smash community died, and so will this one. One thing I have noticed is that any time something toxic forms regardless if it's a job, a partner, or whatever, it will always fall apart over time. Humans do not like to be treated like they are garbage, and any time you swing at someone, they always swing back.
The worst part is that this game was planned to be ported to mobile and Nintendo switch but now I’m not so sure that it will even happen anymore

What's up with these games recently? FNF is like the only recent game that is still getting more talk.
Nick brawl isn't a live service game, years from now you will still be able to play the game no matter how low the playercount is. Meanwhile if the Multiversus servers shut down then the game is unplayable forever.

Welp, this game just got Thanos snapped. The creator of Multiversus has announced that the game going down for the rest of this year until 2024. You said that this game probably won't exist in a few months, but now, we're actually passed those few months right now :(
It's a downward spiral. Lack of content happens due to declining playerbase but declining playerbase happens due to lack of content. The game being under a big name studio now works against it, since big name studios aren't willing to fund what they feel is a losing cause.

Should’ve released a character every month at the least. Fighting games in general don’t keep a large audience for long.
I think the problem with this game is that it didn't get the features it needed intime, and all of the updates were just too weak to keep people interested. I kept playing this game until the end of October but the lack of interesting updates just drove me away from wanting to play anymore. The fact that it's just a huge grind to even have enough money to unlock a new character is probably one of the biggest issues.
Ever since they stopped updating the game with new characters and removing mods, it lost all interest in every party of the community. I actually really loved the gameplay and the devs working on it, but they did not deliver in advertising and giving what the fans want

PPG is one of the Franchise's i want in the Game, but considering how Multiversus is going, i doubt its happening
They should also add Joker
If they add David Zaslav into the game, not as a fighting character, more like a punching bag like they have in actual Smash Bros, maybe that'll get people into playing this game again lol

The reason why my friends and I stopped playing was because they took too long to add ranked and there was nothing to try to achieve
I really like multiverses. I may not play it as often as I used to but that's only because there's nothing to strive for in the game. Sure, I like playing as my girl Garnett and my main man Rick Sanchez, but it's the lack of new stuff to do in the game. There's only so many times you can get knocked off the stage by somebody playing as a gremlin and then tea-bagged before you need to buy a new TV. All they really need to do to gain all of their attention back is to start adding characters on a regular basis. I'm going to be fucking pissed if this game dies before they add Ben Tennyson and proper voice acting for Rick and Morty to the game!
