Registers are group of flip flop if we want to store n bit we have to combined n flip flop . basically a register is is memory element in CPU. CPU access the data of register very fast
when we want to execute a program the CPU execute it sequentially the control reads and instruction from a specific address in memory and executes it it then continues by reading the next instruction in the sequence and execute it and so on. this type of instruction sequencing needs a counter to calculate the address of the next instruction after execution of the current instruction is completed and this work is done by program counter register, it is also necessary to provide a register in the control unit for storing the instruction code after it is read from memory here CPU uses instruction register.
in this manner they are many CPU register which helps CPU to execute the program or to perform any task the size of the register depends on the main memory size.
there are following types of CPU register in the basic computer
if the memory unit has a capacity of 4096 words and each word contains 16 bit
1.DR -data register 16 bit its function is to holds data (Operand)
2.AC-accumulator 16 bit its function is to holds intermediate result
3. PC-program counter 12 bits function is to holds address of the next instruction going to be execute
4.AR- Address Register 12 bit it is also called memory address register and it holds the address for memory
5.IR-Instruction Register 16 bit hold instruction code
6.TR-temporary register 16 bit holds temporary data
7.INPR input register 8 bit holds input character
8.OUTR byte output register 8 bit holds output character
