The best thing about jewel cases is that they’re replaceable. You can’t really do that with digipaks and digisleeves. They may look nicer and allow for more artwork, but the CDs are prone to getting scratched when pulled out.
What bugs me is when I order a CD from Amazon or wherever and it arrives with the CD rattling around loose in the plastic jewel case because all the little teeth on the spindle that holds it are broken and a lot of times the CD ends up being scratched as a result. I also don’t like cardboard ones that are so tight you can barely get the CD out without touching the surface of it. I’ve actually torn a few.
I have another issue with jewel cases: The right side of the door differs from case to case. There are 2 vertical knobs that hold the front cover or booklet, which in other cases are 2 small round knobs or 2 spikes vertical to the pages of the booklet. In the second and even worse in the third case, they hurt the booklet, and often, at least I do, replace the cases.
I still prefer jewel cases because they sit better and more uniform on the shelf and most importantly protect the disc itself..It sucks they crack..If they would standardize on a good digipak that would be awesome..But for most of the designs of digipaks the discs scratch easily which really peeves me off..Great video Larry..
Happy New Year Larry! Personally, I am not a fan of record sleeve style cd packaging. Can be difficult to get the disc out, may not fit in my cd tower. I often re-house those in jewel cases. Digi-paks (cardboard with a jewel case style tray) are fine for the most part, except my copy of Close To The Edge has a broken middle spindle thingie. Generally I prefer jewel cases. I wish they would bring 'em back.
Yes, so many bad packaging designs! I just played 'No 1 In Heaven' last night before bed and was thinking how much I like the packaging. 'Past Tense' and 'Gratuitous Sax...' are not great packaging. That Simon And Garfunkel packaging would be the worst! Great video!
I try to always buy jewel case CDs so they fit in my CD racks. Several new releases I've aquired over the years are in odd shaped cardboard squares/ rectangles and they don't fit in the slots on my racks. Annoying as heck because then it looks like I'm missing an album, when it's just in a different location. I wish it was all standardized.
@@LarryGravesCanadianStudmuffin It is completely fine. Handle was "KingStefou" back then I think. It's been about 15 years. We spoke a few times. You were one of the first people I would watch on UA-cam. I typed in "CanadianStudMuffin" and was very happy to see that you were still active and making videos. All the best to you, Larry.
Easy to fix though. You can buy replacement jewel cases if they are cracked or the tray's spindle tabs are missing, just take your CD front booklet/inlay and back inlay out, and your CD and then put them in the undamaged case. Only issue I guess is when you have a lenticular cover with the original jewel case, or hype stickers/labels on the original case that you want to keep. The key problem with a digipak as with a vinyl sleeve, if it's damaged then it's permanently damaged, along with the artwork and sleeve.
Ya and for me way back in 98 was the first time I experienced a non jewel case/cardboard packaging it was from your fellow Canadians Rush. Their triple CD Stages- (Live) 2 of them you had to pull out and one of them was a show from 77 it was in an individual sleeve. 🤪 every release Rush has since then has been that cardboard crap. My solution for the most part is to put the CD’s in thin line cd cases on the shelf next to the original crap cardboard package. 🤪😡
All CD cases just gave me extreme anxiety. Opening a new one without cracking it...They'd get cracked, or lost, ...then what.A pile of scratched up CDs. Then trays of holders , little CD briefcases, packs, car hanger thingies...ugh. i gave up.
Some packaging these days is really made cheap I also did a video on cd packaging a while back jewel case is the best I know there trying to eliminate all the plastic but this xmas after grand kids presents were opened I looked around and the toys were about 80%plastic 🤔go figure sorry for the long comment 😏🐸🇨🇦
The other Simon & Garfunkel CD box set Columbia released was better. It had their 5 original studio albums, all in smaller reproductions of the original album covers, liner notes and all, plus each disc had bonus tracks on them: mostly alternate takes of various songs. Columbia did a similar thing for Janis Joplin. Very good packaging.
The record companies must not be making much money on contemporary releases. They keep repackaging, remastering, remixing and making boxsets of all these classic albums. Is it a money grab or is there a demand for this stuff? They are sure out of my price range. Glad I have the originals.
It's the music that matters so I don't understand all the extra stuff in CD's Larry, maybe a little booklet but that's it,I usually only look at the booklet once when I first listen to it anyway and everything's so darn small in a CD and it's not like albums use to be,I miss the days of albums. Bob
Truthfully because of the convenience ive been using Spotify and UA-cam for my music for years. I still have my CDs and records but everything is just so conveniently right on my phone, for better sound I'll connect to a Bluetooth speaker in the car and in the house. Also like that I can change the band or song much faster than switching out CDs and records.

Some nice ones. Thanks.

like these videos a lot 💿💿Thank you!
Not much of a problem with vinyl, Happy New Year, hope 2025 will be a better year for you and Molly. 😊🎉
CD packaging has become as complex as opening medicine bottles. Simplicity should be the rule. Happy New Year Larry 😊
I agree, irregular packaging is a pain

Luke here. I used to watch your videos 15 or so years ago when I was a kid. Wondering if you remember me. Lived in the Niagara region.
Don't remember the name, sorry but thanks for dropping by after all this time!

Sometimes even those regular jewel cases have some of the little tabs in the middle broken off and then the CD doesn't snap into place anymore.

Can a soft material like paper or cardboard scratch polycarbonate plastic? I haven't seen that.

I only buy CDs in jewel cases.
Not a big fan of the cardboard sleeves. I don't mind them for blu rays though, considering how scratch-resistant they are.

Yeah, I bought the wrong box set, ha ha!

Beach Boys Summer in Paradise jewel case is a terrible design. I don't listen to it often so I can't remember how to open it.
Yes, I own that and it is a pain for sure, as is listening to the music inside.
Metallica's latest albums packaging is awkward and i hated it and donated it to get rid of it
