Scherzo No. 1 “Alien Vortex” by Elijah Stevens

Wrote my first Scherzo today. This was based on this opening figure that I’ve been hearing in my head on and off for over a year which was before I started composing. I would forget the tune and then somehow it would come back to me even after months of not coming back. Well this morning I woke up singing it and I said today, you will be written!!! Lol This piece really felt like it wrote itself. As a classical pianist, who also enjoys other genres of music like jazz, pop, r&b, hip-hop etc Sometimes you want to play those different genres but in a structured way that’s not just simple chords and rhythms, something that captures the essence of today’s popular music but also the essence/foundation of classical music and is also substantial in terms of virtuosity. So I’m merging two worlds with what could’ve easily been a pop song into this fun dance that reminds us of the music of the past and the present and perhaps the future.
