Fun fact: Revel's End Prison was created FOR this movie. Christopher Perkins (the guy who is/was the DM for Acquisitions Inc.) said in an interview that a couple years ago, the developers of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves asked him are there any maximum security prisons somewhere in the Forgotten Realms that they can use. When Perkins realized there is no maximum security prison anywhere on Faerun yet, he decided to create Revel's End while making the Rime of the Frostmaiden adventure (and the adventure takes place 3 or 4 years before the upcoming Baldur's Gate 3 game, which is still in Early Access).

Great review Cap! Guardians of the Galaxy was written and directed by D&D players, that's where some of the channelling comes from. Still, more Zepplin is always a good thing. I want it to be a roaring success of a movie, like Zepplin, more D&D is also a good thing.
I wondered if the round building was Helm’s Hold? It is in the right direction and the warrior statues might be linked to Helm, but turning it into an arena sounds like a stretch, so I reckon you’re right about it being something new. With it being situated around Neverwinter, I wonder if the forest is around Thundertree, where there’s still ash zombies rising all over the place? I wonder why they didn’t go with Gauntlgrym for the underdark setting - maybe they want more of a tour! Oh! I loved that the barbarian has Danger Sense/Feral Instinct kick in with the mimic. I’m so happy that it’s built in a way that we can see round by round what’s happening - the dragon’s acid attack followed by (rolls dice) another one six seconds later!
The Led Zep song works, simply because we're not listening to the short snatch of lyrics, we're taken on a ride by the riffing guitar, and any number of their tracks could have worked for that.
With regard to the forest, it may be Adhe Wood. Certainly the spider denizens fits the description (along with several other woods). However, the reddish colour on the lower trunks and ground may be an interpretation (potentially a misinterpretation) of Shadowtop trees. On fandom Shadowtop trees are said to have leaves with a coppery colour on the underside. If that were interpreted as the trees having a coppery colour on the underside, that would fit what is seen in the trailer.
Most of the earthmotes fell during the 2nd sundering (start of 5e) which might be why the moonstone mask isn't shown. Also the collusium might be covering the section of the city that was walled off in 4e and had a huge chasm.
Regarding the shift to an owlbear, as well as the direct change from one form to another, the Shapechange spell would allow that. It is, also, a druid spell albeit a level 9 spell. Was she wearing a jeweled crown (the material component for Shapechange) at one point?

Yeah.. Led Zep is always great to hear... but it is a bit misplaced here. Trailers are usually put together by a separate company, so I'm not expecting music choices like that in the feature. I could be wrong, though.
I love how this trailer is delighting the modern 5e high-magic fun&silly trans fans like myself but also the old grognards. D&d is truly a magical experience!
I'm not convinced it's a horn of Orcus . It might be the Draakhorn, a gift of Tiamat's. The Dimension Door spell could be a portable hole to a storage demiplane. Although it's really neat either way. The Shield spell looks more like Timestop or perhaps Slow (which does have an area of effect although we think of it only affecting creatures). Or you could be completely right on all these points.
Now that you've watched the movie, I'd be curious as to your thoughts on it. Though we disagree about the Tomb of Horrors (by the way, I own the original and all it's incarnations since), I generally do hold your opinion on all things RPG highly. I found the movie a fun, entertaining romp. Loved Chris Pine as the Bard (though I might have recommended some Bard-like powers be given to him to the movie's makers) and Hugh Grant (as the faux-villain). The Red Wizards of Thay are a worthy true villain. The female druid kind of stole all the scenes she was in. I hope they make a series of movies with this cast, perhaps losing a member along the way and picking up a new character or two as they go (as one would expect from a D&D campaign).
Strong hunch that the Black Dragon sequence is sadly only going to be some kind of flashback/expository scene that's connected to Holda's (Michelle Rodriguez) background or motivation. Those on horseback look like they're evil aggressors given their alliance with the most vile of chromatic dragons, likely dragon cultists with those black winged helmets.
I was a bit cynical about this, but after having discussed this with my gf, and after your review, well, I'll let myself enjoy this when it goes out. Would I have liked a more "serious" movie ? Yeah. But this could be a good start for the D&D franchise comeback to the big screen, and maybe later we could hope to see some of the classic stories of the FR come to life (looking at you Elminster... and I would really love an adaptation of Shadril's story)
Nice review Captain. I know old-school TSR modules, but I don't know modern settings that well. Is Forgotten Realms modern? Am I dating myself? LOL. Anyway, I really enjoyed your insights regarding the trailer. Nicely done.
he was wrong about the horn. Which in retrospect should have been obvious as neverwinter is in Faerun not Exandria which is a completely different setting on another realm in the forgotten realms multiverse
Looks pretty good, definitely in the Marvel mould, but there's nothing wrong in aping a popular formula (especially given that quite a few movie creatives nowadays have a background in playing RPGs in their formative years). Over the years though, I've come to view the 2000 D&D movie in a different light. Sure it's by no means a GOOD movie, but when I watch it I imagine the production crew took a bunch of homebrew D&D players, gave them a costume department to deck themselves out in, told them to play their game, then cut out all the dice rolling and rules queries, and just kept all the silly voices and general 'hamming it up', while adding in cheap CG monsters. Whenever I run a game, I make sure I'm channelling my inner "Jeremy Irons" for any major big-bads! As ever, thanks for your insights, looking forward to seeing your views on the Greyhawk box set.
They've stumbled into the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Cinematic Universe and landed in the Red Forest. Keep going to get to the Brain Scorcher, where the 2nd Edition Psionics rules went to die.
@@captcorajus I'm wondering if the arena is meant to be the Black Pit from the Baldurs Gate expansion, I think the air ship over the city may belong to Acquisitions Incorporated, I think the Horn Of Orcus was a plot point in Keep on the Shadowfell, which was the first adventure the Pax team played, as for Whole Lotta Lovemay be a reference to the Stephen Lynch Song DnD where he references using Led Zep as a soundtrack in his gaming sessions

I love how this trailer is delighting the modern 5e high-magic fun&silly trans fans like myself but also the old grognards. D&d is truly a magical experience!
Yeah, I'm really happy that the overwhelming reactions have been positive!
I mean I am one of the old grognards that turned into a fun and silly trans fan.
One of the main characters is a bard, "Whole lotta love" is 100% an appropriate choice 😂
Okay, FINE.... lol
A Whole Lot of Love...Sounds like a Bard to me
Lol.. yep!
I MUST SEE THEMBERCHAUD ❤️❤️❤️
Because he gets well paid and fed for fuelling the duergar's forges?
I'm not convinced it's a horn of Orcus . It might be the Draakhorn, a gift of Tiamat's.
The Dimension Door spell could be a portable hole to a storage demiplane. Although it's really neat either way.
The Shield spell looks more like Timestop or perhaps Slow (which does have an area of effect although we think of it only affecting creatures).
Or you could be completely right on all these points.
I totally thought it might be the Draakhorn, but the involvement of Szass Tam the Lich made me consider it was the Horn of Orcus.
I think we're seeing two spell effects. Shield but then also Time stop.
I was thinking Portable Hole.
Absolutely loved it. It exceeded my expectations, and yes, I so wish they'd continue the series.
I watched the movie yesterday and it was the best.
I loved myself!
@@captcorajus I loved the yes corpse scene and the chubby dragon
Strong hunch that the Black Dragon sequence is sadly only going to be some kind of flashback/expository scene that's connected to Holda's (Michelle Rodriguez) background or motivation. Those on horseback look like they're evil aggressors given their alliance with the most vile of chromatic dragons, likely dragon cultists with those black winged helmets.
That's a good theory. I certainly HOPE the movie has depth like that!
9:03 bold move cotton, lets see how it works out for them
Serious WTF??! Love it! I'm there for it.
Hahaha the blood elf art got me 12:45
That shield spell was actually a time stop spell
Yeah, that was pretty wild!
FR was published in 1987 and became the default setting for D&D. It has undergone some revamping over the editions. Not my favourite by a long shot.
Very cool video. I hope they pull this off.
I loved the fat dragon, he's so cute I just wanna hug him
He was hilarious
@@captcorajus Watching him trying to pull himself up was the best thing I've ever seen. I don't think anything will ever compare
They should have gone with Blind Guardian for the soundtrack…
he was wrong about the horn.
He's not fat, just big boned.
Thanks.
I hope the movie is fun. But it looks like something i would see on streaming
Whole Lotta Love used ironically here... (Fingers crossed)
This movie is going to dominate at the box office because people genuinely want escapism & this totally serves this up on a silver platter!
They've stumbled into the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Cinematic Universe and landed in the Red Forest. Keep going to get to the Brain Scorcher, where the 2nd Edition Psionics rules went to die.
🤣🤣🤣
The city is waterdeep
Nope. In interviews they have specifically said the city is Neverwinter. Also, Waterdeep has no river bisecting it. Neverwinter does.
@@captcorajus I'm wondering if the arena is meant to be the Black Pit from the Baldurs Gate expansion, I think the air ship over the city may belong to Acquisitions Incorporated, I think the Horn Of Orcus was a plot point in Keep on the Shadowfell, which was the first adventure the Pax team played, as for Whole Lotta Lovemay be a reference to the Stephen Lynch Song DnD where he references using Led Zep as a soundtrack in his gaming sessions
hey im from the future turns out hes just a fat dragon
I was exactly correct person from the future as to who the dragon is. They called him by name, Themberchaud, in the movie. 😁
@@captcorajus person from the fututre wasnt paing enough attention cause they were laughing at fat dragon to hard n didnt hear name lol
I'm really hoping Acererak or some other cool old character is in the film. That would be the best fan service ever.
Charles Dance as Acererak would be perfect.
The statue on the right by the colosseum is an elf with a scimitar... Drizzt? Which might make the one on the left, Wulfgar? No, not Wulfgar, as the warrior wields a sword. Some other hero, then.
Interesting idea, but I would think that Wulfgar would have a hammer and Drizzt would have two scimitars. :)
@@captcorajus Historical accuracy is often sacrificed in Hollywood movies ;)
@@captcorajus Drizzt and the other heroes are well known in the area, especially the Ten-Towns area. And while Drizzt fought with two scimitars, his better known one was Twinkle. Could possibly be Icingdeath, I suppose.
Thyatian knights eh? If only, my friend...if only.
I'd lay wager... note the shaved head and head tattoos. They meet the description... and makes sense. You have other ideas?
@@captcorajus it was a jest from my part. Thyatis is not Thay :p
@@captcorajus I suppose you meant Thayan knight.
@@captcorajus but I'm still wishing for a Mystara movie ♡
@@ΗλίαςΛιάσκος-ε9ρ Ha ha, nice catch. That's what I meant of course.
I've always pronounced Themberchaud as tem-ber-show, since the word 'chaud' in French means hot.
Could be. I don't speak French and WOTC notoriously doesn't provide a pronunciation guide for its weird naming conventions.
This movie is actually good
The only thing I do not like about the trailer is how the party is verbally fighting every scene. I like it when the party gets along and supports each other, but it is the only conflict in this trailer, so they needed something.
I think that will be in there too... For this trailer I think they wanted to highlight the 'witty banter' aspects.
@@captcorajus not against witty banter, but I kind of want the star to be the party in a d&d movie. The one upsmanship within the party is the only thing that makes it feel not like d&d, you know?
Clearly the Bard is going to subdue Themberchaud.
Bards will bang anything it’s hilarious! I get what they were going for with the trailer!
I dare anyone to call a dragon to their face.
Just saw the movie, noice
Little disappointed it's taking place in the forgotten realms only because with this turning cheek approach to D&D the movie is taking. It's really excluding the possibility of a Crystal Shards live action don't in a more serious style that it would deserve
