A VORTAC is a radio-based navigational aid for aircraft pilots consisting of a co-located VHF omnidirectional range (VOR) beacon and a tactical air navigation system (TACAN) beacon.
Just as you said, they've been obsolete for many years...but still have good use for basic navigation.

I’m very grateful to you for reporting detail. I’ve watched a few dozen hikers over the years on UA-cam. They all said “I have no idea what that is” meaning the OMNI as it’s often nicknamed. There are multiple pilots in my family. In the early 1960’s I was introduced to this technology on a one hour fly around to demonstrate the new navigation aid he called OMNI. We “squawked” (the sound of an impulse sometimes on radio) our position and then the guy in ATC gave us an ID on radar and we followed it all the way home. To a teenage boy in that generation it was magical. That’s how it came across to a non pilot listening to the conversation and observing. Thanks for sparking a memory. It was brand new then.

Max patch area is the roughest place I ever hunted. I love your videos, they are very informative and you have such a lovely personality.

Oh, Lisa we love your videos! You're such a doll and we absolutely enjoy every step you're taking on the trail. When your videos come on, my husband and I are so excited we stop everything to watch them! They are so informative and we've learned a great deal from you! We like that you're so upbeat and friendly! Can't wait for the next one! Happy travels!! -Bill & Denise

Many thru hikers have recommended the Kings Hawaiian rolls over the past 3 years. Nice video. Good Luck, Rick

Hello Tex!! Question for you..is it ok for us non hikers to call hikers by their trail names? I never know whether to call you Lisa or Tex!!!! Anyhooo your videos are the most upbeat, positive, informative, funny and I could go on and on. I sure hope you stay healthy and safe on the trail...you are one if my favorites if not favorite to follow! Happy trails to you🙂🥾🥾

I am pretty sure anyone is allowed to call people by their trail names regardless if they hike or not. We all know who Dixie/Darwin are for example, and they’re known by those names vs their real names.
I agree with you, that Tex is amazing tour guide. I know a lot more about various tidbits from her videos than others.
