Built in 1934-35 by the Civilian Conservation Corp for mule rides, the 10 mile out-and-back trail starts 1/4 mile north of Phantom Ranch, heads east on the Tonto Plateau on the north side of the Colorado river, and ends at a campsite at Clear Creek. It stopped being used for mule rides when park visitation droppe...

In September, you normally meet at the corral at 6:45am. Starting October 1st, it gets pushed back to 7:45am. Yes, you should book a room at the canyon or Tusayan for the night prior.

Thanks Tex. As a retired physical sciences teacher I appreciate the geology and fossils being pointed out. The GC is one of the classic examples used to teach sedimentation and geologic unconformities. I also appreciate the lack of music to highlight the serene and relaxing quality of a trail.

Wow, you're alive! And back on the UA-cam. Last I remember you took us down on mules, maybe 2 years ago? Frankly, with my fear of heights, I don't see how one can walk or ride down. But I appreciate you taking us nice and safely to the bottom. Last week, I read that 169 (unsure of exact number) people have died in GC, and it's easy to see why that might be. Even though I never left the top, being there is still one of the highlights of my 68 years. Again, thanks for this. I loved it!

Hi Tex. We hiked the Clear Creek Trail on 10/22 & 23/2024 based on this video. We saw a Bighorn Ram while going out. On 10/25 I saw you just above 3 Mile Resthouse leading a group down to HG and said hello. It was a challenging hike but the views were cool and Clear Creek was an oasis. Thanks for the great recommendation.

Loved the video and others mentioned the history. I hiked after a stroke and being half paralyzed for a while and did a video of it. I'm gonna try this with 5 people .Specifically I am researching the hike and cant find any actual location markings on maps or description of aprox mile markers. I see you mention this:" Two large trailside cairns mark the first legal camping on the west end of the Clear Creek Use Area. Cant tell exactly where on the trail they are though. Can you provide any info on this? Thxs

It is two miles on the Clear Creek trail to get to the cairns where camping becomes legal.

So fun reliving my visit there in the 90s. "E. W. Razey" was there then so yeah it's 1904. Google shows a newspaper mention of him living in Illinois in 1912 so he survived the climb back down.

I rode down (and up) in February of 22 and I'd hiked the canyon half a dozen times previously and I could not agree more let the mules are not the easy way down. If I was to rate them I would say 50/50. Riding and hiking are both strenuous, you just have different aches and pains at the end of the day. The only hints that I had not received prior to going were the possibility of "runners bladder". Not a serious condition, but definitely startling. Luckily for me it didn't occur until the end of the ride when I was able to look up the issue immediately.

I know I am a few years late, and I don’t know if you will see this comment. But I just binge watched your hike, and it was better than any movie or show I’ve seen in a long time. But the best part is that it was real! I just completely bawled my eyes are watching your last video and your summit. A super big congratulations!! ❤ My husband and I want to through hike the AT when he retires right before 2030, so I have a few years…but I’m ready to go now! Haha! We live near the roller coaster in Virginia, so we have done a few overnight hikes. I am going to hopefully hike like you, where I soak it all in, appreciate it for the good and bad, and talk to all the animals! Again, congratulations. And thank you so much for taking the time and effort to put this series of vlogs together. It was so beautifully done, and I learned so much. I’m sure I will watch it again in the next few years and use it as a guide for our own hike! 🎉😊 -Laura E in Loudoun County, Virginia
