  • This progressive video is a #composer #challenge using the "power of demonstration" to help learn what is needed for good #melody writing. I asked 5 composers to help me come up with a checklist, and throughout this challenge, I give you my opinions on what good melody is. I do this through careful analysis of their #music compositions through the art of #musicappreciation.
This is a comprehensive analysis of music (within a half hour) to help you learn how to listen to music correctly, but in a fun way! So if you are composer, whether a beginner or professional, come on in! There are insightful music composition tips inside.

Appreciate it. The idea is that there's no set formula on how to answer this question, and each composer has their own methods and style! If there WAS a formula, music would be uninteresting and uninspiring, don't you think?

Yes, I agree with that. The examples were different and all interesring.

I really enjoyed the video! Really informative and I liked the fact that you encouraged musicians to examine the melodies they love instead of giving them an easy-to-follow checklist for melodic writing. In my opinion, memorizing and singing good melodies by heart also helps a lot in acquiring good melodic writing skills.
I am sorry I could not make it to the premiere and hope you keep posting more videos like this!

Thank you! I like to talk about music from the artistic perspective rather than the mathematical perspective, unless I am doing a tutorial. I've done 2 massive tuplet showcases on this channel so far, but those are hard to grasp and is for a very limited audience. This style of video is much more general, and a fun change. However we also can't ignore the technical aspects of music notation either, so I have to find a good balance!
Don't worry about missing the premiere, maybe you can make the next one :-) The audience has spoken, and I will be glad to do another one of these styles of videos.

This video is exactly what our (not so) small community of budding contemporary composers needs. Interactive and educational. I’m glad to have been able to contribute to your work, thank you!! I will look forward your next video on motives

The algorithm gods have shone upon you, my friend, for it brought me to your door.
I’ll tell you what I like most about a melody, and that is its harmonic quality. I can’t quite pinpoint what it is about specific harmonies I love, but I can say for sure, this is what I most value in music.
This is the foundation for my musical methodology, personally, and being a hobbyist, rather than a professional, I can afford to be my own musical patron.

Thanks for watching! Yeah I got pretty lucky with this video. It was a premiere for members of the Young Composers community on a Saturday night. I'm glad the broader audience is enjoying it. I obviously am going to continue making these types of Saturday night premieres featuring music of the Young Composers community. Feel free to join up! Young Composers serves young, old, hobbyists and professionals. I'm going to update our header to make this more apparent.
And harmony is definitely a complex topic. And highly mathematical too. But I agree, good harmony is absolutely something that can help shape a melody. In Camille's piano concerto, he used plenty of harmony in order to create his variations. Henry also made use of harmony to complement his Piano Sonata. I wish I could demo Rachmaninoff's symphonies on my channel, because his harmony is out of this world. He also makes use of motifs in his beautiful symphony 1 that I'd really love to point out. But I can't demo the music I want bec of copyright issues, bummer.
Anyway, welcome to this community on UA-cam, and hope to see you around in Young Composers!

Came up on my recommended. I’m no longer as active of a musician as I once was, but the analysis you provide of the compositions and the way you present your thesis left me with no confusion. This is a fantastically produced video that has introduced me to some of the most beautiful contemporary compositions I’ve heard in recent memory. Amazing work, and bravo to all of the featured composers!

Thank you for your wonderful comment. I'll be sure to pass your note to the 5 composers who participated. Even though my channel is dedicated to music notation, a big part of becoming a better composer is simply learning how to listen to music. And that's what I hope this video can show.
