How refreshing to see and hear... Great Video! We need more families out hunting in the way you guys/gals do. Those who need to be educated in the right way to hunt in New England need to watch. You put in the hard work, don't take shortcuts, and do it in a safe way that benefits all of us out there. Also love the passion and fun you all share, this is what it's all about!
My 1st time hearing deer was great too. Two fawns, button and doe followed me on a steep ridge in a heavy snow. I kept hearing a little mew, mew. Next thing i know, they were on me. That stuff is awesome.
Wow that is a really great idea grunting while you're walking through the woods....Its a little risky but without risk there is no reward...I was thinking at first that it might get you busted even easier by drawing attention to yourself and if the buck can see you from a distance once he confirmed the noise as an upright walking human hed be out of there in a flash....Then there is the other part of me that feels like if your close enough that a buck can see you he is gone regardless of whether or not you're grunting. Pretty interesting though and going to have to give it a try someday. Thanks for the tip
Can always do that see it in Nevada the jackrabbits looking at the tracks and they have little highways and be like trying to figure out an actual track on the actual Highway I actually I don't mean actual I mean car and determining the tread it's like really hard and there's bushes everywhere
Hey Rodney, great video. I'm just become aware of tracking as a hunting method this year and I'm really looking forward to putting these lessons to use. I'm wondering if you have ever, or have heard of anyone being successful tracking deer with a bow. Are the shots typically close enough for a bow to be practical? Thanks!
Some times, thickness of cover, hunter ability, wariness in a deer at face level, would be huge factors. it would take disapline to take only the very best of shots ,well within range, and if done well could be the ultimate Fair chase...but I know few with the will power, under our circumstances where we are. it would take a lot of hunting to get to the point and that makes you more impatient.
Wearing Orange comes back to the ol debate that I've heard for years and that is just what a Deer can see and how good their vision actually is. Some people believe they can see Orange and certain colors. Others think they can see only black and white. Some say they can see well. Others say their eyesight is pretty poor. Sometimes I think that Orange while necessary is a hindrance because other hunters can see you but so can every animal around and sometimes I think the Deer can see that color or some form of that color that immediately signifies danger.
There’s no way to completely fool anything and so I gave up hoping to do so along time ago. Just keep it to a minimum and keep trucking sometimes I see you sometimes they don’t sometimes they smell you sometimes they don’t I just make sure I’m seeing as much as I can hearing as much as I can and smelling as much as I can… oh And shoot as straight as I can!
@@mtndeer thanks. I try sticking to shadows as much as possible and always walk real slow when coming around corners or over a hill. I wish there was a way to know for sure just what Deer can see ans what they can't because at times I think they can see Orange and other colors and other times I think they only see silhouettes
Just found this video and I have a question...hopefully you find this cause I am really wondering. It sounds like you guys grunt with your voice on the videos...when I do this it sounds ridiculous like deer will run away from me cause it sounds so bad. Is there a secret to making it sound more realistic with my voice beyond just practicing? Maybe each deers voice is different too so it doesn't matter....just wondering. Love your channel
I live in Florida, where, on private property it's not a requirement to wear hunter orange, however, I seem to like my wife's husband so it's a must for me!
there over the shoulder , get it done , hunting was the real thing and they were hunting big bucks before it was fashionable. larry's book" how to kill the biggest buck of your life" in my opinion is the trackers bible and has yet to be topped
they did much of their filming in Ontario, more deer, less difficult hunting and you could just go on your own ( crown land) to do the same thing in new England is doubly difficult with high pressured deer, limited space, and spare populations and tons of trackers and educated WILD deer.
@@mtndeer People see all these different hunting style videos -- myself included -- and think, "YES, I can do that! But as you mentioned, any one of the methods may not be viable, or AS viable as another where THEY hunt, depending so many factors. For instance, I am in Central Florida where the only public land is WMA'S, as opposed to Wisconsin where Dan Infalt has "a thousand different spots" he can get to just by parking and walking in. It doesn't snow, or get cold enough generally to hinder fawn survival, so the rut is all over the place. The largest tract, south of Apalachicola is The Ocala NF, and it's notorious for shooting fatalities, so many of the WMA's don't even allow rifles. AND,.... try to find a decent how to hunt in Florida video. If I had it to do over again, I would have purchased as many as possible small fruit orchards near high deer population areas where a nuisance waiver can be obtained to shoot any deer any time all year.
Great info, especially the part about the hunter orange, can't wait for hunting season!

Great 3 reasons for hunter orange, especially the last one! Great segment Rodney!
Thank you for the tips!

Rodney good points about orange

I always wondered how the whole tracking game worked or more like how to make it work...thanks!

I bet YOU don't even know what this means 3 months later. ;)

Love the hunter orange commentary. It's so upsetting to me when I see orangeless hunters

Just use the mouth to call. 👍
That's how I find my wife's mother at the mall.

Ever had the chance to watch any of the Benoit videos?

Rodney Elmer & Mountain Deer Taxidermy agreed! I read the books at least once per year along with watching the videos. Never gets old!

I shot my biggest buck by imitating other deer snorting and grunting he stood there about 80 yrs. staring at me I'm sure he thought I was another deer
Am 73 and
👍🇺🇸
Deer can't see orange .. I'm sure they can't see blue Jean's either
Wearing hunter orange should be a choice, not a law.
Great video
