    I am so thankful for this video. I have been trying to propagate mine for a year now with no luck... then I followed your directions and in two weeks is happening! Finally a cutting Didn't die! Wish I could post a picture

      Ok it’s 6 months later, I got a really nice rooted cutting of N. sanguinea from a private seller, with 2 growing plants on the stem for $10. It’s doing fantastic in my east window, more leaves and each one has a nice pitcher at the end. I use only rainwater for my carnivorous plants, and give them an occasional fish food flake, have not tried Betta pellets in the pitchers. This video now has me confident that when it needs pruning I’ll know what to do. Oh it’s sitting in a tray but I have a small rock propping the pot at an angle so no water sits in the pot, I just water til a little comes out. Thanks for the wonderful Nepenthes videos -and Drosera, I love them, have D. capensis red and D. binata doing well too, they are in a tray with rainwater. 😊🌱

    I love pitcher plants! I took some cuttings from my gaya hybrid. One really took off! Another is slow going, it has roots but no new growth as of yet. The other two not so much they are still green so I'm not giving up on them. Want to get more Nepenthes and try to grow other pitcher plant species.

    Can I just sit mine in water to propagate? I've had my plant for years and one of its vines have started to die and I'm hoping I can get new plants. Mine also has basil shoots but they are on the vine itself just looks like whole new plants coming out of the vine in some places

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  8 місяців тому

      The process of taking the cutting, preparing it and potting it up takes minutes - the process of growing roots will vary depending on conditions - but usually it'll take a couple of months. You'll know when it starts to grow.

    I am so nervous to try this with my Nepenthes. It has 2 really good looking shoots coming off the main mother plant , but im so nervous to kill or hurt the plant
    also, when Nepenthes grow a flower. do u cut it ?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  11 місяців тому

      You won’t harm the main plant by cutting side shoots from it. And when it grows a flower spike, either cut it it you want pitchers or leave them alone if you want to see them. You can’t lose! 😁

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  Рік тому +1

      Thank you. I've never heard of cinnamon having the same properties as hormone rooting powder. I would buy the real thing. But to honest, in my environment, Nepenthes cuttings root readily even without it. Bottom heat and humidity is the key - at about 18°C.

    • @bernardo1969bs
      @bernardo1969bs Рік тому +1

      Thank you and I use the cinnamon for regular plants and it works. I just got the thing, I don't want ti kill the cuttings. 🙏🏻

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  Рік тому +1

      @@bernardo1969bs I would suggest that they would root anyway - with or without the cinnamon powder. Cinnamon may have some anti-fungal and/or anti-bacterial properties - but it doesn't have rooting hormones. The cinnamon may help deal with any rotting that might occur. It certainly doesn't do any harm so if you feel it helps - go for it.

      They’re pretty tolerant of most media but try to avoid anything that isn’t airy. Could be coconut husks, orchid bark, coir or other loose and well draining media or a mixture. If using coir or husks make sure to wash out salts first.

    Thank you for such a helpful video! Question: can I take multiple cuttings from the vine? Like, let's say reduce its height by half? I love my nepenthes ventricosa x lowii but it got so tall I can't fit it in my room anymore. It has multiple big basal shoots. Thanks in advance 💐🌱

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  Рік тому +1

      Yes you can! Take as many as you want - especially if there are basal shoots coming - the plant will just put most of its energy into growing the basals. Eventually it will re-sprout from the node you cut down to.

    I don't have much room living in a flat so and my main Nepenthes Ventrata is far too long for me. Can I cut the main stem and take cuttings to put in a glass of water and let the basla shoot grow from where it is.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  Рік тому +1

      Yes you can prune it like most other plants - just above a node. I've never tried rooting it in water but it roots fine in sphagnum.

    Under heat… would one of those heat mats for lizard enclosures work? I am in southern Ontario and am overwintering 2 Asian pitcher plants, 2 butterworts, and 2 Venus fly traps. I have a small enclosure, 12 hour grow light cycle, and a hydrometer keeping it above 60%, one of my pitcher plants mouths have all shriveled up and fallen off but the plant itself is giant, is it safe to take cuttings from the plant during the winter with it’s current conditions? Do I need to give it anything other than distilled water and sunlight while it has no “mouths”? Thank you!

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  9 місяців тому

      I wouldn't know about a lizard heat mat - never had one - but there are plenty of horticultural heat mats that are cheap and do a good job of adding a few extra degrees. Taking cuttings from the parent plant won't harm it despite the season - the only issue is whether the cutting will take. I always think it's worth a try especially if you're providing the right conditions. Treat the cutting as the adult - same temperature, light and distilled water. The more cuttings you take the more likely you'll be to get a result - but I've always had high rates of success with nepenthes. Good luck!

      Indeed. Nepenthes are pretty tolerant of a wide range of potting media. I've got some growing in peat moss, some in coconut husks and some in coir. There are many mixes out there that they can cope with, providing the chosen media has certain characteristics.
