Moxon vise looks good! Many of them, like yours, have handwheels that turn on fixed shafts. That allows the wheels to spin more freely, but the shafts are always sticking out so they are usually cut short. I made mine the other way, with handles fixed to the screws. It doesn't seem to make much difference, but I like the larger capacity without screws sticking out the front, and don't miss the easier spinning.
I was just writing a comment to ask the same question. Why not turn the shaft and have the screws sticking out over the bench instead of in front? That’s how I’m making mine, too. Thanks for putting this information out there.
Its a small thing but I really like that you give dimensions in metric and imperial as I am finally starting to learn the sizes. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks.
John, thanks for a great video. I have the York Moxon vice kit fromWorkshop Heaven which I'll be making as soon as my new workbench is complete...I like the idea of the elongated holes on the front face and will probably nick that idea from you. Cheers Mark
Im trying to find components but on a budget. Is there anywhere else you might be able to recommend that do similar? Love the work you do! And thanks for the video
Sad that I got rid of my Black & Decker Workmate when I had nowhere to keep it. It was from when they were brilliant, about the 1 millionth made, 21st birthday present. It did much of what this Moxon vice does and was a strong bench you could use for hand tool work.
Hi John, great video, thx a lot. I did see another Moxon vise build and this guy made a small vertical V shape groove in the jaws. He did this to clamp round stuff like dowels. Extra feature?
Hi john a other great video. I am building my bench at the min in the conner of my garage . I like vice . But what you think about fixing it to the front of the bench? It paul sellers bench i am making .
You could do but honestly it's not really an issue unless kids are running around and it's at head height and that is not a situation you would let happen.
I'm not a huge fan of these vices as it's a bit difficult to approach the work piece without running yourself through on these rods. Love your video though!
Wouldn't be a fan of this type of vice it was obviously designed by a female engineer whose woodworking husband had cheated on her so let's have 2 spikes to impale his manhood on......

Glad to help Steve
Thanks for the info and link to WDS site. My hardware kit has just arrived from them so I’ll be making my vice at the weekend. Great video.
My pleasure
built one a few weeks ago and am very happy with it. An excellent video of how to make it as usual.
Tuyệt vời 👍👍.Đơn giản mà hoạt động tốt,không cầu kỳ phức tạp như những kênh khác tôi từng xem họ làm

Awesome work, John! Really well done! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Really cool John. Love the gear too. So well done!!!
That is a useful source and I doubt I would have found it on my own - thanks for that
That's what I thought when I came across that site
Nice build that vice looks bomb proof.
Why not add 2, 20mm dowels, 1 each end to the bottom of the vice. Then you could fit it in the dog holes at the front of your bench.
Thanks John for the idea ! I need to build one for sure, even though I might go for a budget version without wheels. Cheers mate
No problem Pedro
Nice build, could you add the offcut to the base of the rear jaw to add stability
you could

Looks like a good solid build. I think prices and getting hold of certain things is going to take a while to settle down yet.
Nice job, John......well done !
Excellent job, very nicely done thank you ✅👍 just subbed
Thanks Michael and welcome
Well done John another excellent video keep it up lad
Glad you enjoyed it
very nice John.

Workmate is way more versatile than this type of vice

Yeah sound like good idea 💡
Hey John just ordered their kit on your recommendation. What was the final thickness of both jaw pieces?
lovely build John, can you also clamp to the MFT if needed?
Yeah no problem, turn your mft bench into a hand tools bench in seconds
Hi john a other great video. I am building my bench at the min in the conner of my garage . I like vice . But what you think about fixing it to the front of the bench? It paul sellers bench i am making .
Yeah you could my only issue with that is the screws sticking out permanently on the bench.
Love the video. Do you have one for the work bench you where using ?? Really cool
Why not drill larger holes alltogether so that you can clamp stock or projects that are somewhat wedged shape crosswise?
Where in Ireland are you finding 8x2 anything. I used to be able to 8x2 larch from a sawmill near me, but can't even get that anymore!
McMahons
Class ! Thanks John
That's it... I'm making one. Thanks, another great video.
Very welcome Ann, glad the video was useful
Big fan, keep up the hand tool work. L
Thanks 👍
where do you buy your wood? (based in dublin here)
McMahons hardwoods mostly
How often do you need to sharpen your blades on your planer thicknesser?
Depends on use and what wood I'm using but roughly every few months
Good video!!!
Thanks!
Great video John. Mind me asking where did you get the maple
Got it from McMahons
Did you do a video of your previous one with clamps?
I did
Noothing like a Moxcen voieece !
Great job, John. I'd be nervous of having those screws sticking out like that - would this work with the wheels at the back, on top of the bench ?
You could do but honestly it's not really an issue unless kids are running around and it's at head height and that is not a situation you would let happen.
Don't kid yourself. This is sponsored.
Never liked the danger of 3/4 threaded rod sticking out 6" or more from the vice jaws, and its ugly
Great piece of work again John, but not so great on the spelling! It’s a vice… you’re not in America! 😂
sorry I watch to many American youtubers lol

Agree 100% very bad design

Its not really as big an issue as you think. I have yet to hit myself on a moxon vice screw
