We are visiting the historic town of York, England, as part of our series of videos about this wonderful place, and in this episode we're going to be sharing some travel tips with you from a lifelong resident of the city, who is the manager of one of the best hotels in tow. The Dean Court.
First, we provide a quick preview of the city of York which is one of our favorite towns in all of Europe. The historic center of York is a large pedestrian zone with open street markets and lovely shops and plenty of outdoor restaurants and cafés with a mix of visitors and locals out some of whom are walking their dogs.
That makes a good chance to meet somebody and have a chat you'll find the people of York are very friendly. It is a city but with a small-town atmosphere, and plenty of history that takes you back to ancient Rome, the Vikings, and William the Conqueror. The longest medieval wall in England runs around the old town with different gates send tower fortresses that protect it.
Above all, York is a cathedral town with the largest Gothic church in northern Europe and many other historic buildings scattered through town.
There are some major museums here, but the whole city is like one outdoor museum an authentic trip back in time through the centuries a window to the past.
The Dean Court Hotel manager, Simon Murphy, describes the city and gives suggestions for your visit. The Dean Court hotel is located next to the Minster, York's famous gothic cathedral.

I’ve spent about 8 weeks in England; York is, by far, my favorite city! Beautiful cathedral and architecture, very walkable, lovely people. It makes a great home base for many other sites nearby: Castle Howard, Whitby, several Abbey ruins, a short train ride up to Durham, etc. It feels like a small town in America, with friendly people, plenty of food and shopping. Dean Court Hotel is in a lovely location. And it’s a college town so there is a mix of local, students, and tourists. Lovely train station, we typically landed in London and immediately took the train to York. Dennis, another beautifully done video, promoting tourism, which I’m sure they appreciate! I can attest the service at Dean’s Court is top-notch.

Alisa, excellent summary of the beauties of York. I'm glad you had the chance to experience the Dean Court, which offers that rare combination: high quality, reasonable pricing, central location in one of the world's most historic, walkable and beautiful cities.

@@michaelhawkins7389 but my website is called townsofeurope.com/ :) I'm presenting the area of York within the wall, which I consider the Old Town. Even when I go to a city I focus on the old pedestrian historic zone, the "town".

I enjoyed the way you presented the city of York: castles, defensive structures of Romans, the old city and the pedestrian ways...it is indeed a good video, and York is a beautiful place to visit.

I am originally from York and enjoyed what was a trip down memory lane for me. I visited York recently, looked up at York Minster and whispered, how could I ever leave you. York is truly a beautiful city I miss it so much. Thank you.

As an American I ask is Prince Andrew the Duke of this city? Does a Duke have a physical territory?
