The electric eel is another example of a misleading name (specifically the eel part)

Could you react to "Under Paris". It is a little more violent and scary but it's dumb fun and you'd freak out watching it because of some of the inaccuracies.

What an inserting aspect to consider. Tbh, I think I would think a species was more abundant or 'least concern' with the name 'common'. I would hope I'd look it up before saying as much, but it's interesting and a bit concerning the effect it could have on our subconscious perception of a species.
As always another great and informative video, thanks for making it!
P.S I'd definitely save the sheep eating eagle :)

Thanks so much again for your support and positivity. Your vids are always so impressive, so I always take it as such a huge complement when you watch and comment. "Common" in a name is so tricky. I do understand the impulse to call something common, especially if it is more wide spread or abundant than another similar, closely related species. From that perspective, it is a very logical name. But names that are comparative are problematic because those comparisons can change, and can make one species seem more important than another. It's a tough job. Thanks again!

Why use ai for an eagle eating a baby lamb? We have the golden eagles doing that. Sea kitty? That just a saltwater catfish I ate. PETA so dumb. Good work Dr. salmon

Thanks for another great video. "Killer Whale" is always a name I found interesting 👍

Yes, great example. In marine science, there has been a big push not to use the name killer whale anymore, and instead use orca. This is because of the negative connotations of "killer whale", and because technically, they are dolphins!

Well, they do kill larger whales...some of the few species to do so

People want to protect big species but "giant" has a negative connotation? Okay . . .That and the fact that people think "killer" and "sheep-eating" and other predator names are negative when humans and meat-eating are like two peas in a pod.
Also, it's a shame that "blind" has a negative connotation given that, you know, peoople can also be blind. Does that mean people think blind kids are less worthy of help? Or does it not apply 'cause they're more pitied?

And would we make the "Bald Vulture" our national mascot? All other eagles kill their own meals, while the bald eagle identifies as a vulture, eating mostly carrion, dead fish, and sometimes stealing kills from other predators. Never wondered why videos of other eagles catching prey are more common? It's because it's a rare day that the bald eagle ever hunts living game.

Great point. And because this species is a national symbol, it is more likely to be prioritised for conservation.

Oh yes, this one is scary looking for sure. I almost added it to the video but I didn't want to give people nightmares!
