“Here’s a sponsor item we’ve used for TEN YEARS” *proceeds to be amazed by its rubber shell and read/write capability and use like they’ve never seen them before*
> But this nice rubber finish, I bet is gonna help to kinda dissipate some of that heat. > rubber > insulator I mean, it’s not too thick a coating so it’ll transfer _some_ heat but the regular bare metal versions fare better.
0:37 That's a lie. They did have piracy protection. Unfortunately for them , it was easy to crack . All you had to do was burn a program that ran in front of the game image and the dreamcast would detect it as an official game . If you simply just made a copy of an official game , it would not work . Most pirated games that where downloaded off the internet already included the boot loader program with the image file so all you had to do was burn it onto a cd.
There is some mystery about it though, the Dreamcast did have some fairly complex trickery for obfuscating the game files, and it should’ve been impossible to reverse engineer it. But there’s some evidence that a Dreamcast developer sneakily gave the technique to the pirates, even though officially the pirates just managed to track down a used Devkit and figured it out using the manuals that came with it.
I literally just got the T7 Shield SSD from Amazon during Prime Day…and here it is again! Little sucker feels super solid, glad I was able to get a good deal.
Japan's love of the MIL-CD (Music Interactive Live CD) format really allowed the hackers to run wild. Later versions of the Dreamcast actually removed this function and thus you always gotta watch out for those consoles produced later because all your homebrew releases won't work!
I have a Dreamcast currently in my living room that came from Japan and I put in a GD-emu to make it so I can play games off an SD card. It's hooked up via VGA to Old CRT flat glass monitor. It's beautiful.
I get it, it's the sponsor, but saying that the rubber coating on that SSD helps dissipate heat kinda rubbed me the wrong way, that's exactly the opposite of what rubber is good at...
I also had a PS1 childhood but some friends in high school had the absolute Dreamcast drip back then. Sure PS1 had Tekken but Soul Calibur was so visually striking it's like an arcade-at-home, which was a big deal back then. And since Sega was totally about the arcades back then I saw Dreamcast as the elite platform. Now decades later and I rebought a PS1, plus a Dreamcast for the childhood I never had.
For the Sega Dreamcast, the comment about the disks is slightly inaccurate. They used GD-ROMs(an abbreviation of "Gigabyte Disc Read-Only Memory"). It was developed by Yamaha to curb piracy common to standard CDs and to offer increased storage capacity without the expense of the fledgling DVD-ROM. At the time that the Dreamcast came out, no personal home computer was capable of writing a GD-ROM. You could write a CD-ROM, which was maxed out at 700 MiB(not enough to accommodate the data for a Dreamcast game) or a DVD-ROM(incompatible for the Dreamcast). But without the proper compression personal home computers were unable to write GD-ROM data in an understandable format for the Dreamcast. So it actually was an effective means of stopping piracy on that console for the time.
After daily driving a wireless headset for a couple years I can confidently say I'm never going back to it, it's just another device you have to worry about charging, and at least for me I couldn't get a full day of gaming out of them without having to plug them in again.
thing about the Sony monitors that it doesn't have 1440p reso since it was created for ps5 and 1440p was not supported to ps5 that's why for people wants to buy those Monitor either u get the 1080p or 4k option
turbo grafix 16, dreamcast, gamecube, nes, snes, atari 2600, ps1,ps2, xbox, xbox 360, xbox one, xbox one x, xbox series x, intellivision, colecovision, n64, saturn, genesis, sega cd. i think thats all of the consoles ive owned
Dreamcast did have great copy protection and used a proprietary format called GD-ROM (Gigabyte Disc)... they just abused the fact it could play Video CDs and the bootloader for that, so they found a way to just compress and burn the games to a typical 700*MB CD and it would boot. You actually can't play burned copies on Model 2 Dreamcasts, if you check the bottom of your console you'll know what model it is.
That Dreamcast keyboard is sitting in (and sticking out of) a box behind me right now. I have no idea where the Dreamcast is btw. Probably in one of the boxes in the closet.
Wrong about the dreamcast... it didn't use cds it used gd roms which held way more than a cd and there was copy protection just very weak and held completely on the game itself so with some scrubbing and a patch to self boot (or a swap disc trick) you COULD burn to cd and play without modding the system at all (except late production runs of the model 2 systems). But scrubbing and burning reduces the quality of things like audio and cutscene/fmv quality

So entertaining. This channel deserve more than 10 mil subs. Keep up the good work Austin and the whole team.

actually the Dreamcast used GD-ROM as a disc format and they were 1 GB per cd
Yeah, the PS2 uses standard CDs & DVDs

Hello Timmy Turner.
I blame games like Shenmue and D2.
A lot of "backups" could fit on CD, though some games required the removal of video and audio files

The PS5 cooler video established that Austin has very little understanding of physics. especially pertaining to thermodynamics
What's the point of spending a lot of time trading, taking risks, if there is Cross Staking ?

Despite the general consensus, the Dreamcast did have copy protection, it was just really bad and easily bypassed.
