As a Ireland man. I had a soft spot for this England team when I was a kid. Class players in Johnson, Greenwood, Robinson, Cohen and especially Jonny Wilkinson was awesome to watch I use to practice after school pretending I was Jonny Wilkinson’s
Wow. Great match. I love these 30-minute highlight shows - it's almost like seeing the whole game, but with some of the boring bits cut out. The only thing I felt was missing was the lead-up to Australia's first try.
Great game to watch from an Aussie. England clearly dominated for vast lengths of time but set themselves back with Wilkinson slipping which let flatley score, a snatch and grab try to sailor and a flatley runaway from a rickety ruck. The oz team back then used to regularly stay in games by snatching and grabbing at tries like that!
I was at Twickers for this. Two things I remember. Firstly, being sat in the stands in (happy) disbelief at the comeback. Secondly waking up in the morning and NOT remembering much after the game!! 🤪 🍻
The last era before mass bodybuilding and mass substitutions for players that can't last 80 minutes because of their muscle mass. Bring back limited substitutions and we'll see less injuries and more matches like this!
I miss these days. England went into every match believing they would win, and they almost always did. Our players weren't amazingly brilliant for the most part - just good, intelligent, committed and well coached. Everyone knew their role, played it well, and the team virtually picked itself. None of the constant chopping and changing that has blighted our squad since then. Classic match, could have gone either way. What an autumn this was!
I know your comment is 5 years old, but here goes anyway. Our players weren't amazingly brilliant? Of this team, Robinson, Johnson, Wilkinson, Hill, Back, Dallaglio, Cohen, Greenwood, Vickery, Thompson, Dawson, were all world class players probably better than anyone in their positions at the time. Australia were no mean team and current world champions at the time. This was one of the top 3 sides the world has seen in my humble and most likely somewhat biased opinion. The week before we beat NZ in NZ, to a scoreline that flattered NZ (Howlett's offside try being the points in question).
I'd say Dallaglio, Hill, Johnson, Vickery, Thompson, Robinson and obviously wilko were the best in the world in their positions. Five in the pack, lol.
Tom Alexander during that era those players and that unit were the best. That team scalped the 3 SH powers in consecutive weeks and then a few months later would lift the Webb Ellis cup on Australian soil. They were a great side and deserved all the success they had.
This aussie team missed tim horan. Yes, they were still a good side but horan gave them more attacking options. His defence was solid too Hes definitely up there with nonu as 1 of the greatest 12s to play the game.
I was at that game. Top game and very entertaining. They'd be the 2003 Final teams the following year. 32-31 that game and extra time in the 03 RWC Final.....close close stuff albeit England a bit better.
Easy to say afterward but in reflection , that was probably the game where England won the RWC. Incredible mental strength and quality to come back from 19-31 against such a good Oz team
Blimey what a match - I'd forgotten how close it was and I can't remember if I was there - at home or in a pub. 16 years ago where did they all go to - I had only retired from rugby myself the year before after playing for 33 years since I was very young. Thanks for post.
@@RadicalCaveman Well yes and no. I have all my limbs but my back can be a bit of a nightmare some days. I played in a veterans match in November 2000 and the oppositions full back was a certain John Gallagher. At 36 he was past his best but I'll never forget the payback tackle he gave me after I tackled him.
I hate Stuart Barnes always so negative and what does he have against jonny wilkinson? Wilkinson gets a hard 50M kick and Barnes asks why everyone is applauding he really hacks me off :( great vid though
Blimey, you only have to watch 2 minutes of this to realise the differences between this England team and the current RWC 2011 England team. For Cohen's try, they had an inside centre who could break the gain line, the forwards cleared the ruck quickly, the scrum half does not take a step- just passes the ball, and the runners come from depth and run straight direct lines. It is a simple game when played correctly. George Gregan and Matt Dawson- such a fantastic pair of fast passers.
I like Simon Dover's comments from 10 months ago regarding how he's more sad for Australia than England! How did England go in the RWC in 2015 Simon, and who played New Zealand in the final? Go the Wallabies!!
Just in case you're still curious, back then, there was 'injury time' similar to that in football - the game ending on 80 mins was introduced the next year.
I remember how happy I was during this time, England finally had a team. Watching now, I am reminded how good Australia was. Half of the Aussie team are legendary giants of the game. Little sad, strangely more for AUS than ENG at how much they have come down.
As a Ireland man.

Me too im a south african but eng 2000 2003 undisputed champions of the world
No doubts about it. The best generation of England Rugby
This England team would win every world cup. Superb
how nice to see proper scrums. and high tackles not being penalised constantly.
yeah very nice high tackles. the players getting concussions and problems later on in their lifes must also like it a lot.

This was back when they still added up stoppage time and played it at the end, rather than stopping the clock
hike6ones; nice one putting all these classics up on the tube, love 'em!

thanks so much for this man and all the others love long videos :D
wow greatest England squad EVER
Until now...

Great game full on fantastic
RIP Dan Vickerman
This English team is solid

Keep these videos coming please, I was there that day, only 12 years old, such a good day, tickets were alot cheaper aswell :)
Agreed Wilko changed the game plus Barnes couldn't kick himself :)
I missed this at the time, thanks very much for posting.
And almost all of the England players stayed on for the duration.
Brilliant match!
Is it possible to have full match plz?
GREAT GAME BY BOTH TEAMS[ GREAT PLAYERS ON SHOW
Le meilleur XV de la rose de tout les temps
I was at that game. Top game and very entertaining. They'd be the 2003 Final teams the following year. 32-31 that game and extra time in the 03 RWC Final.....close close stuff albeit England a bit better.
Great, Tony! And I met Trevor Woodman in Perth, Australia a year or so after the 2003 RWC; one very big lad!
Easy to say afterward but in reflection , that was probably the game where England won the RWC.
Incredible mental strength and quality to come back from 19-31 against such a good Oz team
Game has changed massively now, especially when you look at the high tackle laws now to then. No players moaning though.

You played for 33 years? Are you physically intact? :0)

@@RadicalCavemanI'm still ok and much fitter than 4 years ago
This was a really good Oz team
. Flatley was a superb player
Such a shame Simpson-Daniel was bitten by the injury bug - what a fantastic player
His partnership with Cohen so dangerous
What a game that was!
What a team 👏 😃
And next up was the boks which we all know got embaresed
Wonderful to watch again. Thanks for the great videos. Don't suppose you have the 26-26 draw Eng-NZ in 1997, do you?
Best backline Wallabies had since the Ella brothers.
Today they'd have kicked it out but England played on. We don't have that confidence anymore.
So many high tackles.
Yes but that was then......
Who on earth was referring this? No yellow card for the number 4 - nearly 7 minutes of injury time...
A lot of injuries as I remember.
How did Robinson stuff that up at 16:23? 2 weeks in a row 😂
Robinson's pace was about acceleration and changes of direction, not straight-line speed. Flatley was quick, Howlett was lightning.
I was there and this doesn’t show how lucky Australia was. In this game
I hate Stuart Barnes always so negative and what does he have against jonny wilkinson? Wilkinson gets a hard 50M kick and Barnes asks why everyone is applauding he really hacks me off :( great vid though
Toby Wilkinson, he is being ironic.
Marc Wilding no he’s being a douche bag, like these days you can tell which England player he’s in love with and who he isn’t...
Although we were winning against the best, they were only narrow wins. Bubble had to burst eventually
24:19 one lone brave fan
❤
the inside center is greenwood or tindall?
Why wasnt Dallaglio playing?

George Gregan and Matt Dawson- such a fantastic pair of fast passers.
Why is the clock 86 mins and the ball was kicked into touch about 4 mins earlier. the whistle should;ve gone...
12:34 Goddamn!
Stttttttttttrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaalllllllllllliiiiiiiiiiiiiiaaaaaaaaa- ALWAYS in Englands shadow
@Wobblly121 Because Wilkinson is ten times the player Barnes could ever have been. Plus he's a Sky commentator, and they're always shit.
I like Simon Dover's comments from 10 months ago regarding how he's more sad for Australia than England! How did England go in the RWC in 2015 Simon, and who played New Zealand in the final?
Go the Wallabies!!
no but great, great, great grand father was Jewish, so tenuous link
bring back woodward
Poopski McJetski well you where wrong weren’t you... 🤪
Why has the ref not blown after 80 mins. How can you have 6 mins over unless it is a full penalty and it was kicked out several times!
Just in case you're still curious, back then, there was 'injury time' similar to that in football - the game ending on 80 mins was introduced the next year.
