I find myself thinking more and more about films being scared of "cheesy" moments like this, and I've started to think that's a shame. Because if you do those moments right, and with conviction, you get some truly glorious moments.

You need an actor who can play bigger than life to really sell those speeches. I've seen good actors fall flat delivering lines like these -- not all of them can pull it off. Idris Elba is one who can.
I’ve noticed that too. A lot of movies are steering away from those cheesy moments, but pure talent, both down from the director, camera angles, and actors could definitely create those defining moments
@@danieldickson8591 Idris was everyone's dad in this film and it shows. The only ones I can think that can make a cheesy scene glorious is Toby Macguire and of course, Robert De Niro.

Pacific Rim as concept is one of silliest movies ever made. But scenes like this made this movie epic. Epic acting. Epic direction. Epic visuals. Epic music. What makes it work for me is her immediate recognition and response. I can imagine this sort of scene has played out many times in the past; where he consoles and speaks with his daughter openly, before realizing he's commander and they both need to set an example for everyone else. He's always been her superior officer and was clearly involved in her training. Imagine watching your daughter lose another martial arts bought (it takes practice to get good.
