    This guy really does as close to a perfect video review as you could hope for. It's rare to have a video this long and not have a second wasted. Great job Barry. If I could request some videos, I would like to see Heusinkveld Sprint, ClubSport Inverted v3 and maybe a best value custom 80/20 rig build with specs if possible.

    Well the permanent button mount explains why Fanatec replaced my entire wheel for free recently. My left toggle switch sagged right out of the box. 3 week turnaround. Pretty impressive customer service.

    I own this wheel and the the rotary encoders are meant to be flicked, and each flick acts like one press of a button. So if it moves three notches in a flick. It's just one activation.
    And the Podium Paddles I'll use the top paddles for KERS and DRS.

    Great video as always Barry!
    Shame that Fanatec seem to be purposely making the FW on these things near impossible to offer options for conversion to USB for those of us that use DD motors - I emailed the guys at SRM regarding conversion for this new V2 formula rim and they pretty much said "it's not happening".
    I'm pretty sure a very conscious decision by them give there podium series DD motors, and Simucube's new V2 which essentially conforms to a similar 'all in one' design of the podium series - no additional box sitting on the ground that contains the 'brains' and the power supply that we all use right now with various types of DD OSW type wheels.
    Thomas is a shrewd businessman and has quite a lot of influence that I'm sure he will use to make it more difficult for other DD wheel manufacturers to compete, at least with finding wheels that are affordable for most of us. Not everyone can afford the custom options out there, which often get to $1000 or more, just for the rim!
    PS - you made me laugh a few time with your pronunciation of 'FanaLEDs', calling then 'FananaLEDs' :)

    In practice, the detents on the thumb encoders do not matter. You just flip the rotor with your thumb in the direction you want, and the wheel recognizes one motion in a direction as a single button press. You can confirm this in the Fanatec driver properties window by watching the test light indicate a single time per throw of the rotary encoders. It really would be bad if those detents actually mattered because I agree they would be unusable in that case. Luckily though, they can be ignored.

    • @simracinggarage3026
      @simracinggarage3026  5 років тому +7

      Yes, I found that out after the review. Wasn't looking for it. I think Fanatec missed an opportunity here to have a realistic encoder function.

    • @sideslick1024
      @sideslick1024 5 років тому +1

      @@simracinggarage3026 Weirdly, this is also how the Thrustmaster Ferrari F1 rim's thumb encoders work.
      I agree that it would have been nice to have the option, but apparently it MUST be by-design if multiple different simracing manufacturers are doing this separately.
      Do we know for certain that this *isn't* the type of design found on an actual F1-style wheel used in real life motorsport?

  • @marian-gabriel9518
    @marian-gabriel9518 5 років тому

    Very nice video...The easy to turn encoders are made like that so you can use "flick" move to register one "click" and the detents are light enough so you can flick them but hard enough so they stop in 2-3 detent passes. And also their functionality can be adjusted via the wheel's tuning menu...I think it's the last seting...

      @@ernestmuric6719I compared to other videos that was done to promote fanatec items. At least he did mention which are the things that is needed to be improved and if its necessary to upgrade if you have stuff of similar performance. Other videos that I came across was just purely talking about the pros and not the cons. Regarding about if his wheel were sponsored or not you can take a look at his previous video. There were some which he bought them and there were some which were loaned. Ultimately I dont really care as long as the review is honest and true. When I get my item based on his review I want to know that they were true and my expectations is set right. So far I am happy with my purchase after seeing his video.

    • @MrHamster1982
      @MrHamster1982 5 років тому

      @@ernestmuric6719 it's always a hunch just like videos from inside simracing. IMO they are bias towards thrustmaster. Especially when they compared the TSPC and fanatec CSL elite, I had the opportunity to drive both and therefore I know that their review was untrue. Getting a DD is a huge step up from any belt drive wheel, so far the belt driven wheel that I had driven which is closest to the DD (OSW) will be fanatec CSL elite and V2.5 in terms of smoothness of course the torque is much lower.

    Hey man, great channel, very informative. I’m starting out with sim racing but am a professional racing driver, so looking to set up a proper sim set up system without breaking the bank. My budget is up to around $4k for now. I have very little knowledge on what gear to buy and need to get a full set up. So looking at Fanatec atm, but want a Formula set up with all the manual options I can get, so 3 pedals, formula wheel, the best feedback options I can afford and a stand that’ll allow racing position and three screens. Thank you!!!

    Would love to see a review and install of the new USB conversion that is available for this rim. There is the Leo Bodnar board with new firmware that works with the Formula V2 as well as the SRM conversion kit which uses the Leo Bodnar board I side of an adapter (similar to his other wheel conversions). I would love to see how the USB conversion is working with this new Fanatec rim as this most likely means the new button box Fanatec is coming out with as well as the Poium hub will possibly work as well. The button box has a full function screen similar to the one on the Podium bases and I am very curious to see if this will work.

  • @jazzyrick

    Just a tip for the thumb wheels...they aren't meant to be one click advancement it seems to me. If you flick it in one direction or the other it doesn't matter if you go 1 click or 7...if it's one motion it will register as one input...so if you need to up your brake bias by 3 inputs you'd flick it three times...the number of clicks doesn't much matter other than they keep the thumb wheel from spinning freely IMO. I mean with gloves on I feel the fine motor control over bumps and in a car/motion rig or even just the force feedback motion of bumps, etc...would make selecting one "click" of rotation to either need a VERY detent heavy wheel or extremely fine motor control...neither of which seem like a reasonable solution in a car/sim rig going 200 mpg(300kph).
    Just my two cents.

  • @legvalmont

    Awesome video. Extremely informative. Question: what do you suggest I get first? The V2 or the V1/Carbon? Money is not exactly an issue BUT the difference in price can certainly be invested in elsewhere, like a better seat or a video card upgrade. Or maybe the brake pedal enhancement. I don't know. I just got the feeling I answered myself.

    Another awesome review. I'm looking at this wheel now and the only thing I don't like is the easily turned rotary encoders right there near the thumbs. Wondering if the wheels can be removed and have an oring slipped behind to give it more friction, or a rubberband etc to just give it a little more stiffness.

    Not related to this post but I’m sure you can answer this for me.
    I have a thrustmaster 488 spider that I recently started using in Forza 7. I have really been enjoying it for the most part however latelyit’s not great (have not used it as I never had a table that didn’t move around and now I do). I’m by no means great at the game but can usually cross the line before the timer runs out and I’m ok with that as I enjoy the game. I tune my cars myself and for the most part am happy with the results while driving a controller. With the wheel most of my favourites are practically undrivable . They won’t corner and tend to spin out and throw themselves into spins for no reason I can figure out so spend a lot of time in the wall and it’s starting to be no fun. I have the onboard wheel settings at minimum sensitivity and that helped some but not much.
    I understand that this is old hardware and have been thinking about a fanatec and wonder if I will have the same problem or not.
    Should a well tuned car you do well with on a controller act the same on a wheel or do I have to retune all the cars for a wheel or do you think the culprit is the 10 year old wheel. I ask because I don’t want to spend that much money on a wheel if that’s how it will be.
    I would value your opinion on this.
    Thx Sno

    For anyone who has this same wheel rim, the Formula V2: even when I set SHO to 0 or OFF, I still get noticeable vibration in the hand grips, whereas I would expect it to turn off completely (and correspondingly, when I turn it up to 100, there's no noticeable change). Is this how it's working on your rim too?

    I'm Osmindo (from Brazil) and, first of all, I would like to say I'm a big fan of your work. I am subscribed to your channel and watched all of your videos.
    I'm having a big problem with my new Fanatec Clubsport Steering Wheel Formula V2 (with Podium Advanced Paddle Module and Fanatec DD2 base) and, due to your big knowledge, I'm trying to contact you for, if possible, you help me to know what is happening and try to solve the problem.
    The Fanatec Kit has only 4 months and on last days it has stopped working some times after a few laps completed on race or practice series at iRacing. All components stopped (revleds, oled panels, all buttons, switches, etc).
    In contact with Fanatec Support, they ask me to check inside the FV2 (quick release stuff) to inspect if the 5 screws were loose. In fact, it was a little loose and I gave them some tightness. After that, the wheel has worked fine for 2 days, when it stopped again...
    I would like to know your advice, if possible, of course, about that issue. Could it be an electronic problem? Any bad component?
    With your wide knowledge, do you see it as a normal/common/recurrent issue with this DD2+F1 Wheel V2 kit due to its high torque/shake? Do you have any suggestions that I can proceed to fix it?
    When I've performed the test with R300 wheel it has worked fine, discarding any DD2 base problem.
    Thanks in advance, hope you can help me with something.
    Best Regards.

    16:06 hope Fanatec will find a way to replace those vibromotors with some kind of micro-buttkickers without such huge latency.. 🤔 Ideally would be with the same mounting form-factor 😉

    Is there anything else other than the four screws holding the metal quick release because I was after using it on another wheel but I took out the four and it still feels like it's stuck on. I didn't want to force it if there's anything on the inside.

      Plastic. With a thick steel plate underneath in the hub area. Where the shifters and hub attach.

    So Barry , those sweet magnetic shifters at 20:58 , how do they work ? Does the shift happen because the magnets come apart and break the circuit or is there a micro switch in there like on those standard Fanatec shifters ?

    Hi Barry i got some problems with the f1 ps4 wheelrim dd1 edition, its randomly disconnecting while racing, maybe you know what the problem can be, did a RMA but Fanatec cannot find a flaw in the v2 rim. With the BMW wheelrim on i dont have any issues. Now they want me to send the base in but i think its madness, because it only occurs with the f1 v2 wheelrim attached

    Hey Barry, quick question, Which magnetic paddle shifters do you prefer? SRM or Ascher Racing? I'm looking to buy one of their fanatec paddle conversions and your opinion is always valued.

    • @simracinggarage3026

      They are both very good units. But I personally perfer the Ascher Racing shifters. Bit more solid feeling with their aluminum bodies.

      Fanatec is pushing their Podium wheelbases hard, so they'd rather people switching to Direct Drive to buy their new servos rather than buy an OSW servo.
