fun fact; at around 3:20 you drive through the area (woodlawn/fredericksburg overpass) the band R.E.M. used to film the video for the song "everybody hurts" - it was done on a weekend when the lower section was scheduled to be closed further down for maintenance.
Very nice. It's interesting to observe how TxDOT design and lighting practices vary between cities... San Antonio is relatively conservative whereas Houston develops more radical styles of freeway construction, and Dallas and Austin seem to have mixtures of these two philosophies. El Paso is an interesting beast as well, given the contrast in geography between it and other Texas cities. They're all super fun to explore though and each brings awesome things to the table! Thanks for sharing, Jim!
San Antonio has one of the largest freeway networks in the U.S.. and has two massive interchanges I-410 at US 281 & I-410 at I-10. Thanks for the video and song selections.
Three things I love: When a town dares to connect interstates right in downtown (the launch of I-90 in Seattle also very fun); stacked parkways (yes, Jim, 3:13 IS really cool); and loops that 3 or more freeways form around a downtown. I couldn't get enough of Kansas City or Nashville. I just kept circling around and grinning like an idiot.
Love this video! The landscapes west of San Antonio through the Texas Hill Country are quite scenic....Especially as you drop in and out of the valleys near Kerrville and Junction. Do you have any videos of that stretch (approx 100 or so miles west toward Junction)? We drove along I-10 toward Las Vegas a few years ago. It's interesting to see how the vegetation gradually thins out as you continue westward.
Enjoyed watching this again; one of your 2015 year of hits. Received a YT notification on an earlier comment, again congrats on the success you had in 2015!
Great stuff, I really enjoy your freeway videos. During this video, you were driving along, and I saw a few buildings and thought, "oh, theres a little business district with a few buildings", but then I realized that was downtown! It doesn't look like Dallas, that's for sure. Also, I noticed the freeway there; it looks old and a bit run down, as if it were built in the '60's maybe? The freeway near the end of the video looks modern though.
Casa Nova Not even close. Texas has more bridges in danger of imminent collapse than anywhere else in the world. Many roads in Texas are poorly maintained and terrible to drive on.
What the fuck are you talking about? You sure you're not thinking of California? Texas has great roads that are very well maintained compared to...well, California. And in Texas, they don't toll the main freeways like they do in California or Illinois.
The true nice suburbs are by I 10 and camp bullis, or the Dominion, where some former and current Spurs players live. cool video! I drive this stretch daily for work but this was still very entertaining!
Nice video Jim. Interstate 10 looks nice in the San Antonio area. In fact, it may be my favorite portion on the whole Interstate. It's even better than I-10 in the Los Angeles area. It takes a lot for me to like a highway in another metropolitan area, over my own area.
Freewayjim Well, it's my second favorite spot, but due to the closeness of how I like I-10 in both cities, I guess you could say they are tied for number one.
This was great to see. I've driven the great majority of Interstate 10 from coast-to-coast, but other than the sections within San Antonio, between I-410 (east) and I-35...I haven't seen *any* of I-10 through the western half of the area, east of I-410. So, other than that short stretch of I-10 in San Antonio I've driven, I haven't seen any of I-10 between US 290 in Texas Hill Country, out to Texas State Highway 71. The western half of I-10 through the city looks pretty nice and spiffy. More interesting than what lies east of downtown, that's for sure. Nice soundtracks on this. Really looking forward to what you have in store through Texas Hill Country!
FreewayBrent Thank you, glad I could fill in some gaps (albeit virtual) for you, lol. I'm still amazed that transcontinental I-10 is one lane for a short length at the I-35 stack south of Downtown, just doesn't seem right.
Freewayjim Yeah, I am surprised it is one lane too.. and I-10 also have to exit itself while US 90 is a main road through the I-10/I-35/US 90 interchange. Was I-10 supposed to go through the interchange along US 90 instead?>
Thanks for sharing been a few years since we have been on that stretch of I-10.. We were in an RV and I have to say it was at first a little stressful.
HA! My neighborhood is in your aforementioned "nicer suburbs" and the office buildings and retail establishments you point out in that part of your video is SO close to my house! That HEB is my neighborhood HEB, the shopping center nearby has the nearest Fuddrucker's and Jason's Deli, etc. It was wonderful getting to relive up to that point the trip I made back to S.A. from Austin (I went via I-130) last Saturday because that's when I felt like my trip had been a total success, and I happen to be a fan of The Doobie Brothers and "Listen to the Music" is one of my favorite songs of theirs, so thank you for that too!!
Very nice ride through San Antonio! Always liked seeing the different highways and yes- that elevated part was really cool! Very nice ride! Plus using the Doobie Brothers as a soundtrack is a nice touch as well! Very nice ride!
@@everythangtexas it may seem small due to the downtown skyline being unchanged for periods of time until the new frost tower completed a few years ago. Especially if you dont leave the downtown area but take a drive around and quickly find out how much the sprawl has creeped to the north and west outside Loop 410.
The stretch of I-10 between I-20 and Texas 6 in Houston is the only section I haven't clinched. That double deck does look nice from below. Keep the hits, er videos, coming.
+Freewayjim I love the videos. Going onto freeways outside cities are my favorite roads. You do an AMAZING JOB portraying the awesome highways. You should do Detroit, salt lake city, seattle, phoenix if you haven't. I'm still new to the channel and have a bunch more to watch still. But please keep these awesome video's coming. :)
+Dakota Ballenger Thanks for the comment, yes I've done Detroit, SLC and have one video of Phoenix that was four videos after this one (15-14), I hope to get to Seattle someday as well.
Just found this. I run i10 Houston to el paso and go thru san Antonio all the time. Also run to Laredo i35 from san Antonio. Texas has best roads in America. Great truck stops too. I think dallas has 5 level stack between fort worth and dallas. Its awesome too. I have spent the night in china grove, not impressed, lol.
@@TheSolarcatcher If you think about it, Dallas really only has one semi freeway loop in I-635. Many other west-east freeways in the Northern Suburbs to compensate for not having a second loop including I-30 and I-20 connecting to Ft. Worth's enclosed I-820 loop which is a different core city of the DFW metro altogether. The inner Loop 12 in the Dallas city limits is similar to what San Antonio had in the 50's with Military drive on the south side to W.W White Rd. on the southeast side of town going North (as known as Loop 13) until the Freeway portion of Loop 410 South was completed in the 70s. San Antonio doesn't have much population in its suburban area outside Loop 1604 on the south side of the city and Bexar county as it is still semi -rural along Loop 410 South and subsequently, most of the additional small towns north of the city except for the I-35 cities between SA and Austin arent truly suburban in a sense like you see in Dallas and somewhat Houston. They are truly bigger city cores and extremely large metros compared to San Antonio.
Jim, what are all those little black boxes on the bottoms of the overhead span sign structures? I saw those on I-35W in Minneapolis this past year but didn't know what they were for. We don't have any here in Denver. They look like they are Red X/Green -> lights, but since those lanes aren't reversible??
gstj210 What do they call those black boxes? And do they really help alleviate congestion? I wonder if they would cause people to move over too soon, thus causing even longer backups.
A lot has changed in 5 years. I 10 west past six flags is 4 lanes each way and its all developments. Also you drove the easiest way. The exciting way is 37 to 35 to 10 at rush hour.
Correct. Finally finished that construction out there for the Leon Springs, Dominion and Boerne residents. I feel like US 281 is the best drive coming in from the North and is only getting better as they finish the freeway past 1604 out to the Bexar/Comal County line. Along with the Loop 1604 upgrades, the I-10 interchange renovation, and I-35 as TXDOT is looking to double deck the freeway out to Schertz, a lot of changes coming to the freeway system here in San Antonio.
nice video Jim and this video has speed limit starting at 60 mph (100 km/h) then and end at 75 mph (120 km/h) and my guess is that the Texas department of transportation copied Taiwan highway 1 in Taipei since both roads have elevated Express Lanes
Thanks for another great ride, Jim. I expected you to use "China Grove" the last time you went through San Antonio so it was nice to hear it this time. I'm guessing that your "Middle of Nowhere" video is going to start in Fort Stockton, include the exciting interchange with I 20, and end with the equally exciting western terminus of US 90 in Van Horn. No offense is meant but, there really is not a lot of exciting scenery visible from I 10 in West Texas.
***** Thanks..no that video is before Fort Stockton, yes I know there's not a lot out there, that isn't the point, just showing people who may never get out that a sampling of what it looks like. Not every video can be the Katy Freeway :)
Most people will never drive that stretch of I 10 so, yes, your video will show them the area. When I first went through West Texas in the 90s, the countryside reminded me too much of the Road Runner cartoons.
Freewayjim You're welcome, I saw exit 573, in your previous video in Houston, I saw exit 760 on I-10, wow, I dont know if any other interstate in any other state has such high exit numbers, Texas is big

leroyybrown SA is 7th largest now, I believe and growing northward. With Austin getting bigger and 2 smaller cities between them, SA and Austin could become a Dallas Ft Worth or other dual city. it'll be huge then, area-wise
jeebus022 While it is technically the 7th largest CITY, that is very misleading, San Antonio is the 25th largest METRO area in the US and a more accurate statement about the size of the place in general (Atlanta is the 39th largest city but 9th largest Metro area, see how that works?). I agree it could become like Dallas & Fort Worth with regard to the growth with Austin up the road and the places in between.
+Freewayjim Larger metros such as Atlanta cover a much larger territory ....a fair comparison would be for San Antonio -New Braunfels (2.4 million) to include adjacent San Marcos & Austin and forming a population of almost 4.5 million and more comparable to the Atlanta region. The video is great but doesn't show how massive San Antonio's freeway system is which is one of the largest in the nation. Bexar county San Antonio population almost 2 million is the 17th largest county in the nation and has over 3,000 miles of freeways. San Antonio's freeways can compete with the bigger metros.
+Adam Benitez Austin is around 60 miles away, sorry, it's still apples and Oranges, plus Atlanta has a Top 10 skyline, neither of those cities do, in fact SA's is quite unimpressive..
Not anymore, it’s starting to grow rapidly especially west of San Antonio (Six FlagsI seen a lot of new apartments, houses being built unfortunately. Also, they widened I-10 to four lanes in each direction for 16 miles past where the video ended. They even lowered the speed limit to 70.
@@YTReese2011 I believe after you go west of Kerrville, TX it goes up to 80mph and they even resurfaced I-10 for miles since the road was in rough shape few years ago.

I went there last year and I hated it
Adrien Côté ..Booh hooooo!..c'est a domage! vouz brisez mon coeur!

Oscar 370 Mosty on the highways but I did film more than just I-10
Once you get like 15 miles out of San Antonio, everything is gone.
@@Noahvis4 where is it when it gets narrow to 2lanes, and the speed limit is 80. Thanks for the info.
@@YTReese2011 I believe after you go west of Kerrville, TX it goes up to 80mph and they even resurfaced I-10 for miles since the road was in rough shape few years ago.
@@Noahvis4 did you drive through there when it was growing
@@YTReese20112018-now and still is and they redid the frontage roads off I-10 to 1 way!
After the west will u be in pittsburgh

The freeways ruined that city
Tommy Truth ..really? in which way! .. ifyou are not from SA dont even commment on it!
Tommy seems to have loved the old San Antonio and dislikes what it is now.
While I don't agree, I do understand his viewpoint. It's what I think about Austin. Austin used to be a cool city. Now it's an overly congested shithole.
I live in Houston Texas
