  • Is this just a glorified SARB? Is it the new 'Baby Grand Seiko?' Is it really worth the money? No! Yes, and yes! This brightz is a classic design with phenomenal fit and finishing that really puts it into a whole different category. I really feel this beauty is a generational piece and a steal at its current price. Check out my video to see why I feel this way.

    I just got this one as my first serious watch and I love it! It only runs about 5 seconds fast a day! Gonna be happy with this one for a long time 👌

    I just got this watch from Japan. And I totally agreed with your view on the watch. The difference from sarb033 is very significant. The dial, the index markers and sapphire crystal is so much nicer than the Sarb. Build quality is definitely better. Worth the difference. No regrets. Highly recommended.

    • @sheuhauchow
      @sheuhauchow 8 років тому

      Btw, i still have the Sarb. But, i really kind of getting annoyed by the reflections on the Sarb making it hard to read the time. This is what get me looking into this sdgm.

      +Sheu Hau Chow thats awesome! There sure is a huge difference. Both are Amazon watches but there is no doubt the step up in the brightz. Congrats!

    Thanks Bruce for taking your time to do an awesome review . This Brightz is certainly one of my favourite Seiko of all time and i am enjoying it everytime it is on my wrist , i have several GS and credor however i find this watch is just so nice and incredible value ( probably best watch you can find under a grand ) .
    Wear it in good health mate and it is certainly a keeper .

      +ba nguyen thank you much, that's cool you hold it in as nice of regard as the GS and credor. I haven't owned a GS to compare yet, but its on the list!

    I am a huge Seiko watch fan. I have the SARB033, SARB035 and SARB065. They are all 6R15 movements 23 Jewel movements Just like this one here SDGM003. Could i justify the 2x cost between this and SARB033? No. Perhaps others can justify the cost. In my mind, i think this should cost $550 compared to the SARB033 that costs $350, but not the $700 that its going for now. Just my two cents. Great review and congrats on the watch.

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  8 років тому +2

      +Najib Nawas Thanks. That is the big knock on this model- the movement. I agree with you. Having owned both I personally justified the increase factoring in everything but the movement. Execution/bracelet/dial/handset/etc. It was enough for me. Exited to see what Seiko releases next. Cheers!

    As a dealer of the watch I have sold 2 of them and 4 with white dial. They are regulated and runs usually between + 4 and down to - 6 seconds a day.

    This is the most beautiful watch I've ever seen (for my sake), I'm just in love. I will buy it.
    For me, THE perfect watch.
    Some people don't like the polished parts on the bracelet but I find that attractive.
    Only one flaw, it's a 6R15. Good and strong but 3hz, a 4hz caliber would have provided a nicer move.
    Aesthetically I prefer this one instead of the SBGH005 because of the thickness.
    By the way, thanks for the review!

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  9 років тому

      +Régis Godart Hey thanks, I agree with your points. I think Seiko normally puts an unregulated 8l55 in most of the brightz line. Which is a significantly nicer movement than the 6r15, I would have been good with spending a little more for a more fitting movement.

    Love that the SEIKO logo is applied, not printed. Really looks high end. The only thing I'd change about it is the font of "automatic" on the dial. Other than that, it looks like a Grand Seiko!

    Enjoyed the review of this watch. I've decided to get the SDGM001 and I am awaiting delivery. I also like the way they've done "AUTOMATIC" on this as opposed to the SARB 033 & 035. But others don't and that 's great because it's all about opinions. It would be boring if we all liked the same thing!

    Bought one off of WUS last week and it is just fantastic. It's amazing how " blingy" a steel watch can be with all of it's polished surfaces.
    Got a black lizard band for when it gets cooler. The bracelet is well integrated and looks great.
    Good choice!

    Just got the Sdgm001 last week and have worn it almost everyday since. I bought my father the Sarb035 and compared the 2. Huge difference. The price difference is definitely worth the extra $300 plus. I've whittled down collection to Grand Cocktail, Tuna Sbbn 031 and ordering the Sbdx017. I think this is all I'll need for awhile! Plus the wife has limited me to only 3. Ha!

    I'm torn between this and the Grand Seiko SBGH005 Hi-Beat. I know the Hi-beat is the superior watch in all aspects, but I absolute LOVE the dial on this. It's SO beautiful. I already have a Snowflake and I don't know if I can justify paying 6 times the amount for a used Hi-beat.

      @BruceWilliams  8 років тому

    Even at the current price point of $700 it's a lot of watch for your money. Definitely a step up compared to the SARB line. Nice finishing, beautiful dial, decorated crown and a solid bracelet. Only the movement could arguable be augmented. It makes a good case for internal cannibalization at Seiko. Why spend a couple of thousands for a Grand Seiko when you have this for a fraction of the money? Although Grand Seiko is and remains a totally different beast :)
    My only remark with this watch would be the president style links which seems out of place for a dress watch like this. A regular oyster bracelit would fit it much nicer.

    Good job with your videos, just started watching your channel! I've had a few of these Seikos, with this movement, and the time keeping has really been all over the map, sounds like you have a good one here. Wondering, have you ever brought in one of these watches, with this movement, in for regulating, to a watchmaker? I've always debated it, but they aren't terribly expensive watches, and have doubted the utility of it. What are your thoughts on the topic?

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  9 років тому

      +Anson Tsugawa Thanks Anson, I appreciate it. To date I've owned 5 6r15s. This one was by far my most accurate, I was very fortunate with it out of the box. The others were all consistent to around 8-12 sec per day if they were wound. I found if they were operating on a low power reserve they became wildly inaccurate 20-40 sec per day.
      I've never had any of them regulated. To be honest I don't know of a trusted watchmaker local to me. I understand it would also void any Seiko warranty if it was still within the timeframe. To answer your question if I did have a trusted watchmaker here, and the year warranty had passed (But this particular watch's warranty is only valid in Japan so I guess that wouldn't matter in this case) I would definitely take it in for a regulation!
      Thanks for the comment!

    I just got a sarb035 with the white/cream dial and really like it. Very comfortable to wear. I like the dial on the sdgm003 but, I think the size of the sarx015 would suit me better. I was wondering if anyone had experience with both pieces? BTW, liked your review.

      @BruceWilliams  8 років тому

      Thanks, congrats on your purchase. Great choice. I've had both this and the sarb033. For my tastes the only thing I liked more about the sarb was the size. The sdgm excels in every other aspect (movement aside) I've got the new sarx033 incoming so we will see how that stacks up to these 2 awesome watches

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  8 років тому

      Thanks you. I think you could wear it fine. It would be a little large though and take up most of the top of the wrist. If your concerned about the size the sarb033 is 38 and would be more comfortable (not as nice though)

  • @elmanitasdeplomo

    Beautiful. But one thing I don't like is the polished edges on the centre links of the bracelet. A regular brushed oyster suits it better. Unfortunately Seiko does this on a lot of their watches. I can't decide between this and the SARB033, I prefer the case shape on this one but the bracelet kills it for me.

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  9 років тому

      If you have the budget go for the grand Seiko sbgx06x line it's a high accuracy Quartz, sarb like case size with a beautiful oyster style bracelet. Been on my radar for a couple years

    • @elmanitasdeplomo
      @elmanitasdeplomo 9 років тому

      +Bruce Williams Those Grand Seiko's are definitely very nice. Unfortunately I recently started an apprenticeship, with the salary that comes with it so one of those will have to wait a few years. A couple of years ago I had a Rolex gmt2 ceramic(again polished centre links which were scratch magnets), which I had to sell. The strange thing is I don't miss it one bit, and the only Rolex I still want is an explorer1, so simple and versatile.

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  9 років тому

    Hey Bruce, great review! Just wondering how you might compare this watch to a Hamilton Sea View Day date Automatic. Been going back and forth between that watch and the Brightz. Can't make a decision. Wondered if you had any experience with Hamiltons at all. Thanks.

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  9 років тому

      Thank you, I've never owned a Hamilton, but have handled a couple. I think the brand makes nice products. The sea view, being a larger diver inspired watch will have a sporty feel. Whereas the Seiko is a refined, beautiful dressy piece. The Hamilton's movement will have the finer sweep and that's really important to some. Since the are different styles I say go for the one you would likely use more :)

      @BruceWilliams  9 років тому

      +SANATH RUPASINGHE Congrats on your excellent new watch. You will need to buy a watch sizing kit. You can find them for around $10 on eBay or Amazon. You will want to take the small pin from the kit and put it over the hole on the link. Use the small hammer and tap out the pin and collar. Repeat this to remove the desired number of links. Then reassemble by puting the collar back in the link and taping the pin back in. I'm planning on doing an instructional video at some point. I think there are already a dew on UA-cam you could search those out as well. Good question

    Ended up buying the SARX035 instead when I visited Tokyo last month. That font for "AUTOMATIC" bothered me enough to shell the extra Y6000 or so price difference. But nevertheless if you are not bothered by it then the SDGM is a very good piece as close to a Grand Seiko as you will ever get without spending past 100,000 yen (or $1000 more or less)

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  8 років тому +1

      +Solomon Li Thanks! I'm not an expert but its my understanding the presage line is top notch. They use the 6r1x base movement and add complications depending on the watch. The Brightz line is a step above the presage where they use either 8l3x movements as well as radio controlled solar powered quartz ones. Looking at this sdgm and its movement it would probably be better suited if it were in the presage line. I like both of the base movements. They have proprietary hairspring materials and 50+ hr power reserves. I like the 8L more as its a little nicer and has the higher beat frequency, and a bigger balance assembly. I don't think you can go wrong with either line my friend

    Beautiful watch and fantastic review! I'm considering getting this watch as well but that Automatic printing is throwing off the dial for me. It looks one font size too big. With something like that, I feel like I can get use to it. Is the bracelet tapered as it gets closer to the clasp? Thanks!

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  9 років тому

      Thank you! Yes it does taper about 2mm as it gets down to the clasp. Makes it a touch more elegant and comfortable. I really love this piece, I'm sure you will as well. The only thing I would change is scale it down slightly to 38-39mm

    Bruce, has your opinion on this watch changed since owning a GS? Does it feel dramatically different? I've been debating for months whether a GS enough to justify paying 4x-5x this watch. Of course your GM was better, but I see some advantages in the SDGM, the onyx crown, the unique dial. Even the mid-range movement would be hundreds of dollars cheaper to service.

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  9 років тому

      I bought mine used over a watch forum called watchuseek. It was essentially brand new only worn a couple times. I would recommend buying from seiyajapan.com (bought from him several times excellent buying experience each time) the other good place to look is Rakuten Japan. It's essentially Japan's version of Amazon. You can find pretty decent prices there. It's likely you'll have to spend around 600 to get a new one. But congrats, I love mine! I'm sure you will too

    Been trying to decide between the SARX, SGDM and SARB. Is he SDGM003 still a favorite? Was really looking for a white(ish) face until I saw your review (I was turned off the onyx until I saw a black watch - stunning). Interested in your SARX/SDGM thoughts....

      Just now looking at the SARX035. Looks just like a SBGH005 (which I can't afford). I had written off black until I saw your SGDM review - which urged me to look at the black version of a SARX. Yes I still wear mine and love it! It's not a daily wear for me but it does get decent wrist time and will continue to do so. Since you have the cream dial I would go for a entry grand Seiko next, I've always been drawn to the sbgx061 a HAQ is intriguing

    Is there anything like the SDGM003 but smaller? I was going to buy the SARB033, however this watch looks much nicer, but I am after a smaller watch like the SARB033.

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  9 років тому

      +Loftty OG That was my dilemma. I love the sarb size but wanted the attributes the SDGM003 had. To my knowledge the only similar sized watches with those qualitites are some Grand Seiko models. They will have a better fit, finish, movement, bracelet, etc than the sarb and SDGM but much more pricey. 3 models come to mind the SBGR053, SBGT037, and the SBGX061. They are all gorgeous and 37mm but between $2,000-$4,000. Pretty pricey and that is why I went with the SDGM003. I will eventually get a nice, smaller GS but for now I am enjoying my SDGM despite the larger size.

      I used to wear it 2-3 days a week and my divers 4-5 days a week. I've since sold it as over time I decided for a dress piece it was a little too big. So eventually I'll replace it with a 37mm grand Seiko. If it was sub 40 I would still be enjoying it as it's an amazing piece
