That detail with Venom isn't limited to just the movies but originated from the comics as well. The difference between the two is that Comic!Eddie despite being totally okay with threats of cannibalism, refused to actually eat people and made sure to eat chocolate instead. It wasn't till Mac Gargan became the host when Venom actually started eating people for real. Movie!Eddie being more of a passenger then the one in control is less successful in getting his symbiote to not eat anyone.
