Question: is there a specific make or model of dirtbike that has proven to be more difficult to work on than others?
Thanks for answering all my questions! Yall rock

Here is a good rule of thumb for buying a used 2-stroke dirt bike. Unless it has the original tires and chain/sprockets, (one good summer of use to wear those out), plan on spending around $1000.00 more just to get the bike mechanically sound, and that is if it looks in good condition.

I run 5psi all day long long in a heavy duty tube here on Vancouver Island. Slow technical i get a flat maybe once a year. I do run a moose in the summer as speeds pick up

Worn out cylinder plating is usually not from dirt, because good plating is harder than the dirt, and the soft aluminum piston takes all the damage. I do know this from personal experience, but not all plating's are the same. Just about all plating wears out faster than the first Nikisil (sp) Honda started using in 1988. The 125 is over 5 years old, and if ridden quite a bit every year, is about the life of a good plating, (and over 5 sets of piston/rings used). Having it replated at US Chrome is probably around $300.00, ($400.00 total for a top end rebuild), and if you can't afford that, you probably can't afford to ride much. Makes me sad. Any kid who was not too lazy to make a buck before the 1986 production rule could afford to ride and race. It was a better world.

If the crank has not been replaced, it is ready to go too.

And YZ 125s were never known for being very tough. I sold oodles of top ends for them. If I remember correctly, only Kawasaki had thinner plating. YZs had a very narrow exhaust bridge that heats up too quickly and seizes. Hence the two small oiling holes in the front of the piston.

    Let’s go riding

If you have 3-4 winter months off riding per year, (2-stroke 250cc), and ride a lot (almost everyday) for the rest of the year, a bottom end (crank) should last at least 3 years, usually 4 years. Michigan experience. :)

One note here. You are not supposed to just start the bike in winter if you're not going to ride it. You will just cause a condensation and more harm than good.

Jay, I’m a newer rider (competitive surfer in my teens and 20s in SoCal) but I want to get my first true dirtbike, YZ250FX, but recently found out about the red/green sticker. Should i just get it and not ride at ohv? I have a WR250R dual sport.
    Cheers!

1 hour on a motocross bike oil change? I run mine 10 hours or whatever the Manuel says and it still looks clean and not black. I ride my bikes decently hard too

First time I ever saw a valve stem cap need a lock nut. That is not what the nut is for. Professionals can disagree too.

Hey JAY, I’ve got a 2019 dirtbike torn down to the frame oh and a 2017 can you make a video to show me how to put it back together😂 and it will have to be in 4K please and thank you

In the 70's and 80's those bikes were called "Basket cases", because all the parts from a torn down used bike were in baskets. Kids got those basket for cheap and put them together themselves to have something to ride. You can buy from a dealership a "shop manual" (what the mechanics use in the back room, with more information than the regular owners manual.), that show you pretty much where ever part goes, and how to check them for wear. Don't expect to know exactly what you are doing when you start. You will figure it out along the way, and you have a lot more resources than a 12 year old kid had in 79.
You won't believe how good it feels when you finish them and ride them. That is because happiness comes from personal achievement. :)
