- We made it to Alaska! We drove our 2020 Mercedes sprinter through Canada to Haines in 3 days and spent 4 days in Haines. We'll be heading up to Juneau next in our van!
Ahh yes the mosquito, the national bird of Alaska.
😂
got me hahaha
Got that right
Love Jocelyn taking over!!
Good to see Jocelyn in front of the camera. Have fun guys!
Jocelyn has a great attitude!
Use light colored clothes if you're going to a mosquito feeding zone!
Let's up this!
One word. Permethrin.
Alaska mosquitoes are color blind. Hungry and mean!
I'm the same way with mosquito bites 😭🦟 Glad to know I'm not the only one that happens to. Safe travels & have fun!
Can you elaborate on your timeline? You hit the Canada border but was denied due to lack of a COVID test. You went to Seattle, flew to Alaska (OutdoorChefLife), flew back (?), made it through the Canadian border and drove to Alaska?
Damn I thought this was gonna be like. 15 part series getting to Alaska hahah
Great van guys!! and wow awesome camp spot. Enjoy Alaska!!! Jocelyn try rubbing powder deodorant on your mosquito bites to dry it out. Hydrocortisone for the itchiness and top it off with deo (powder though, not the gel kind).
Sad that you've come during the fires. It's definitely been happening more often. Hope your way back down will be clear.
Tim Hortons is awesome.
So happy the van turned out to be a success, and that for the first ever DIY build- massive respect for you two.
I love your lipstick Jocelyne. Glad you guys made it through Canada and safely on to Alaska. Looking forward to watching more adventures!
Is the Alcan all paved yet? I drove down in the early 80’s and it was gravel and dirt. I was told to bring gas cans with me but never had to use them due to good mileage in my Toyota mini pickup. Good luck on your adventure. Do not be in too much of a hurry to see bears. Be careful what you wish for.
Glad to see Jocelyn maining the stage! great job!
try benadryl...keeps the mosquito bumps down...
That is outstanding gas mileage, all things considered. But I'm curious what kind mpg you get in California as opposed to OR and WA. When I did my trip to Canada a few years ago, my mpg was much lower in CA. I think the quality of gasoline outside of CA is much better.
The Sprinter uses diesel, which is (essentially) identical everywhere in North America. Reformulated gas does have 1-3% less mileage due to the fact that the ethanol blended in reduce smog and fumes also has less energy density.
Supplementing with B6 really helped reduce my reactions to mosquito bites. Worth a shot. I get really bad reactions as well. Good luck and enjoy AK!
I suffer from those awful bites also. My hubby is so lucky - never gets bitten.
I use "StingEze MAX Bug Bite Relief - 0.5 oz Pen" from Amazon.
As soon as you're bitten, dab/daub some on the bite & area around the bite.
No swelling or itching.
I actually forget that I've been bitten!
Hope this helps!
Haven't heard that before, will need to try!
Antihistamines work for me as well - your typical hayfever ones. Great video!
109th!
Enjoy this adventure!
Love the show! I, like others, have been wondering what became of you guys! Thanks for sharing your adventure!
Man I hate these nonsense rules. At this point it doesn’t even make any sense. I am all about science and vaccinations but it’s getting stupider day by day. I am glad you guys made it though.
So what happens if you don't make it through Canada in under 14 hours??? 🧐
Do they send sasquatches after you or something?! 😅
Glad to hear, you made up to alaska, can't wait for more vids! Be safe, Taku and Jocelyn!
While you're in Juneau go hike Mendenhall glacier trail by the visitor center. It's beautiful and definitely you will see bears. Bring your rain gear.
Lmao Taku knocking on wood.... Asian Superstition.
Jaclyn is probably allergic to mosquito bites. Your symptoms sound familiar.
Glad you made it. I know about those skeeters in Canada...a real pain... if you find it up there , Deep Woods Off....works...try citronella candles too. Glad ur safe!
Mosquitoes love potassium. No bananas while fishing while there are mosquitoes.
Hubby and I went to Haines in 2016 and LOVED it! Check out the hammer museum if you have the time... Can't wait to go back!
My parents with another family drove up the ALCAN highway from the San Francisco Bay Area in the summer of 1951, each family in its own station wagon. Ours was a 1950 Oldsmobile. I was ten years old. We set up a camp tent every night, except for one of the first nights in Glacier National Park, where it rained on us. After that it was a tent everywhere. This trip took about six weeks up to and through Alaska with side trips to Lake Atlin, Haines, and McKinley National Park (via rail). We returned by the SS Alaska Steamship with the our in cargo. I can still see in my mind (memory) so much of the scenery.
Wow. I hate mosquitoes. I want to go to Alaska for fishing but I hate mosquitoes and I heard of something called no-see-ums. Have you two encountered no-see-ums?
11:38 yo you can see some kinda massive dark figure "hovering' in the back left distance behind them. It last for about 30 seconds.....so creepy.
This video is titled "Driving through Canada..." and there is NO video of driving through Canada!
Tim Horton is AWFUL, it just because you're new at it. hahaha
And it's cheap because US money worth more than CAD, for us it isn't cheaper than other fast food.
Glad you wnet through and that now you can go fish instead.
Loving the vid. Great content as always 👌🏾🤌🏾
Safe travels 🙏in Alaska.
4$ a gallon for gas would mean $16 a litre up here in Canada. Either way, American or Imperial, your math seems a little off, Taku. You should probs let Jocelyn take the wheel for a bit and get some rest 😉
Safe travel guys and eyes on the road always!
Congrats on getting through Ca-nay-duh! Great to hear that you all nailed it on the build, after getting some miles in. That's excellent news. What chairs are you using there? Comfortable repping them? If so, link it up! :-)
I was wondering if you guys would come thru. I watched the lake Alaska Dragon Roll - I would have liked to meet you guys. I live in Haines and I work at the ferry terminal if you 're heading to Juneau.
Well it happened ! Your on the road , the land yacht is working perfectly, your enjoying the magnificent view and the the dam mosquito’s show up and try to take you away like flying monkeys on the wizard of oz ! But there is a revenge! Just think how many will get spattered on the front of the windshield ! Mosquitoes, black flies, and bears oh my ! I think that maybe the further north you go the more your going to enjoy, just remember your not in Kansas anymore, it’s wild country up there , be careful and enjoy ! 👍🏼🎣
I ve seen surfboards being side mounted on sprinters, maybe your kayak can fit that way or vertical mounted at the back of the van.🤷♂️
Bananas aren't bad luck for fishing they're bad luck on a boat.
hobie came out with updated itrac inflatable pedal drive kayaks.. 9 or 11ft..easy to transport.. can even check it as luggage on airlines :) might be an easier option for travel kayaking, hope you enjoy Alaska .. i grew up there, and 40 years later and i still put a dark cloth over my eyes to sleep every night, even tho i was much younger, i remember a bit of the drive up the yukon trail.. during winter ... our heaters actually froze up and we had to have a mechanic work on it .. i believe that was in whitehorse
Congratulations and welcome to Alaska. Btw Juneau is south of Haines, so you will be going south?
I understand Alaska is beautiful, but the mosquitoes would be a none starter
Live a little
On the way back home, do try and stop by a Canadian A&W! It's definitely not the same as the American version!
I’ve been watching for a couple of years. So happy for you two! Living the dream!! Safe travels
Are the mosquitos bigger in alaska due the oxygen up there?
If you hate mosquitos, never come to Australia. haha.
So great there's no fucking dog, unlike most van videos.
When I saw that banana I knew there would be a storm coming! 😂 Should have just thrown it over.
Hope you enjoy your time in Alaska and if you ever get the chance to come back , interior Alaska is where you should go provided you have enough time at least 2 weeks to a month there’s a lot to see and do, take care be safe and thank you for sharing your videos…
the energy is more mellow and chill than most youtube videos. love the video yall
Johnsons and johnsons baby oil gel with aloe and vitamin e works well for my family to deter mosquitos
Been looking at a lot of builds and I LOVE you guys’ build and I now understand why so many people choose to build their own vans.
hey y'all, this is coming from someone who drives in love bug country lol, an easy way to get the bugs off the van is to fill a spray bottle with hydrogen peroxide, let it soak for a minute then rinse and sponge off, shouldn't have to scrub too much at all. on the windshield use the same solution and a kitchen scrubby thingy.
Hydrogen peroxide will corrode metal! Ok on glass 😄
Jocelyn Jocelyn where did you get that purple hat. I need it please let me know!!!😄
watkins makes a cream mosquito repellent. works really good and its not like off.
The alcohol are strange because of temperature. When winter comes people who are extremely intoxicated cool die in the harsh cool. There are also dry counties for that samexreason.
Elevate the solar rack with a fabricated extension and then place your paddle kayak under it.
Uncertain about water in the South East of Alaska. Glacier water is the greatest to get! I agree!
So what happens if you dont make it in those 3 days?🙋♂️
I’d like to see a video of how you do your editing, software, hardware, etc.
Jocelyn you’re beautiful film more 🤙
How about mounting the Kayak up high on one of the sides?
I rather enjoy Jocelyn vloggig!
Your camp chair is cute!!! Where did you buy?
I live in AK and just got back from a halibut fishing trip in Seward. I have never caught a halibut but I managed to get one on that trip, as well as four rocks with one being a prickle back, two silver salmon, a ling cod, two flounder (tossed back) and a skate (tossed back). The whole time I was thinking of your show cause I had never caught these kinda fish.
Also the Captain had a sticker on the boat that said no bananas. We laughed but he was serious. We had a bundle that we had to leave on the dock. He told us later that the bad luck comes from 2 things. Bananas float so whenever people would come up on a ship wreck, they would only find bananas, and that they rot fast so it was considered bad luck to put them with your other fruit because they rot and start rotting all the other fruit. He said "I don't know the real reason, but we are about to go 18 miles out in 10 foot swells and I aint takin any chances" haha
Background in mosquito tent looks like a prop lol
Is this there new channel ? Traveling the world now ?
Have you used your toilet or shower yet
How does your toilet work .i mean after you flush # 2 does it go into a tank were does it go
hearing you guys vibe and chat with each other is just so damn calming and anxiety relieving
What's the high and low temperature? at this time of the year?
The van looks great - I thought you were in a hotel room at first!
CAN YOU PLEASE DO A COLLAB WITH SIMPLE LIVING ALASKA!!!!!
Yess
Don't think they're going that far up north..
oh shit misquotes n bears welcome to Alaska time to cook bro I hope
I like video posting on this channel as well kinda like a behind the scene of what happened.
Please be careful out there.... Bears are no joke
I'm not super sticious , just a little sticious
They need sushi and shrimp tempura drive thrus.
Go do Seward Alaska or homer Alaska
beautiful lush green scenery
A trailer would work fine for pedal kayak and all the extra gear.
Me too girl mosquitoes are awful 🤗
You both look so exhausted. I hope everything is okay. I love your vids!
Quake near Alaska be careful and be safe up there
did you guys feel the earthquake ?
Happy Adventures
Be safe
Put a rack on the side of your van for your kayak...
I think the van needs to have a wrap done on the outside that at least has the outdoor chef life logo.
We have the bed table then we leave the house with a table turn it into a bed and never see a table again until we get home.
U guys r living the dream
Stanzfam always has bananas on the boat
Can y’all record more water Mountain View’s and like cooking instead of talking 90% of the time. In my opinion you’ll prolly have more viewers.
If you want cooking videos and awesome views then you should head to the main channel.
I used to like you till you ate that banana
Look up captain Zac in Juneau and do a colab he is a nice guy
Great work you guys, nice drone footage. Great work!
Yeah it forest fire season here and the gas prices are a lot higher then normal
Hi. So glad you made it through Canada, wish things had been less restrictive but hopefully that is coming. You surprised me with a comment about the coffee being pretty good. Here in the Midwest Canada when we drive into the US we find the coffee and tea very weak/mid. Maybe on the west coast of US your coffee is stronger like ours. Tim’s is good but also try the Canada McDonalds coffee it good too. Hopefully the rest of your trip will be better and your return through Canada goes smoother. It’s a shame you can’t travel more in Canada it’s a beautiful country. Steve
Tea in cafes in the US is definitely not great. :( Some spots in the bay area do a good job though but they're pretty rare. We'll hopefully be able to stop at cafes for coffee on the way down, if things are less restrictive.
