I LOVE this episode despite being so weird. Everyone's wondering why Spike's scared, and it's so simple. Cause this dude is scary. It has nothing to do with fear of dying before completing his mission or anything like that. He was completely overpowered, but by a random creature that he knew then no matter what, he couldn't fight it, couldn't kill it. This is an episode where the show is flipped on it's head, and the power of the characters are taken away. You can't shoot him, you can't punch him, you can't explode him. This wasn't a case of Spike being outclassed. This was a monster chasing him down. I love it cause it gives Spike some humanity, makes him seem more real.
Well said. The unknowability gives him a great deal of menace through its mystery. Another deeply unsettling adversary in anime like this would be the "Crimson Hawkmoth" in Knights of Sidonia. Elements of humanity, but ultimately unknowable and apparently totally undisturbed by battling others and dispatching them.
And this episode also make you feel sad for Perrot Le Fou. Despite being the perfect killer/ assassin that kills for the thrill and seemed unstoppable, you feel pity for what he had become. his backstory of being continuously experimented on adds to the themes and social commentary of Cowboy bebop.
I just had a thought. Throughout the anime Spike is very casual about his own death but when Pierrot has him at gun point It's the only time he was shown to be visibly afraid.
+ARandomGuy It's probably because he knew he was dying for something all those other times, except with Pierott, that was like the most random bad luck encounter ever.
ARandomGuy Perhaps was just the look on his face. Pure insanity is not a pleasant thing to see. A deranged smile...glazed over eyes with a child-like mirth mixed with sadistic glee in them...and to top it all off, Spike would think he was dreaming from how surreal the encounter is, were it not from the pain of getting kicked over and over.
Love how there’s no music in this scene, all you could hear, was gunshots, insanity, fear, and the ominous ringing that symbolizes terror in the dark alley.
Also the ringing in Spike's ears from the tenitus he'd have from shooting that Jericho 941 all the time with no ear protection lol Ive got that gun its such a sweet shooter
The shield protecting Mad Pierrot is based on the Holtzman Shield effect from Frank Herbert's Dune saga. The concept is that any object moving over 200 miles per hour can't penetrate it, but an object moving under 200 mph can. So bullets won't effect him, but a well thrown knife can hit the mark.
Daniel Ryan. Oh your right and when spike threw the knife back at him in the end it actually hit him. He had not been hurt in so long his pain tolerance brought him down in one hit. Good observation and corelation to that book!
Blue_Phoenix To be fair, a knife to the leg would bring anyone down. It's just most people wouldn't cry to their mother and thrash like a turtle on its back as a result, especially when in mortal danger.
I like how this wasn’t a mission. Spike just wandered down the wrong alley, probably would have been content just to keep walking but then this psycho made it personal.

Holy crap was this horrifying and out of the blue. A bulletproof superpsycho who doesn't care who he kills with the mind and rationality of a child.
This and "Sympathy for the Devil" were the most bizarre of the series. Well, bizarre while lacking any humor. The episode where everyone got high off shrooms was pretty weird.
This episode was genuinely terrifying. There’s something so ominous, every frame painted over in clashing colors, light and dark, determination and doubt. It stands out, like a nightmare we were never supposed to see.
@Unforseen Consequences The point is this entire episode was le fou aka mad perriot toying with spike like a mouse a in a snake pit. Even during the ending when fay brought the space ship for a 2 v 1 she was easily overwhelmed and delt with... Obviously spike is a main character so he has the best power of all, plot shield
This scene is such genius... The viewer is so used to Spike's superiority in combat. He looks so calm while witnessing Pierrot's massacre, only to have the tables turned against him in a matter of seconds because of Pierrot's unexpected power. Then the threat of imminent death, the oppressing music getting louder, the run for saving his life... It is breathtaking.
My favorite antagonist from Cowboy Bebop. He completely shifts the formula from them as bounty hunters going after someone, to them being hunted. It helps that he's really the only threat of this level that they ever face. Nice.
The only other person I can think of that could fight Spike into a frustrated corner (besides Visious) was Ed's dad. Spike couldn't land a single hit on the guy.
For some reason, whoever designed Pierrot has definitely read Dune. From the fat floating guy to the unpredictable super fast martial arts where only a well placed knife shot could pierce the shield.
It wasn't even a well placed knife. Spike knew he had one shot and threw. A well placed knife would have gone into Pierrot's eye or throat. Not his leg. If Pierrot didn't have the mentality of a child, that knife wouldn't have done much good. If anything, it would make him angry. As it was, Pierrot hadn't felt actual pain in so long he started crying for his mother.
My favorite part about this fight is how Spike spends almost all of the rest of the episode actually wounded and messed up from just these few minutes of fighting
First time I saw this scene, I was shocked. I've never seen Spike get his ass kicked so one-sidedly. Like, he got hit with a whole air combo. That shit just doesnt happen! This scene is so great because it's so different from the usual. There is no jazz music, not banter, just the sound of gunfire, fist to flesh and the ominous ringing. Damn I love this scene.
Lutfen was more impressive than Pierro,he defeated spike without super powers, just his natural skills. Same About Vincent Volaju from the movie, he beat Spike with his natural skills
Kalvin Johnston combine that with the lack of the typical upbeat jazz soundtrack, in favor of an eerie ringing, and you get the desired effect, which was to show that Mad Pierrot is not someone to fuck around with

@@zhairewelch676 Eh, not really. "Le Fou" is acting more as a title in French, like Louis le Pieux or other royal titles. "Mad" doesn't directly modify "Pierrot"-- "Le Fou" really does mean "the Mad", where "Mad" is a noun modified by the article "le/the", just like in English. If you wanted to say "The Mad Pierrot" you would say "Le Fou Pierrot", though really that word order isn't idiomatic in either language (if you take out the adjective, they both become "The Pierrot", which, again we wouldn't ordinarily say in either language).
I was shocked throughout the whole episode, the animation is insane as well as the direction of the fight scenes and the effects they used. Not to mention the uncanny music that fits the atmosphere amazingly. Cowboy bepop is a certified classic masterpiece even after 25 years
This for me was perhaps the best episode of Bebop with the exception of the last episode because this was the first time that we have ever seen Spike actually be worried and even scared.
This is my favorite episode of the show if only because it's such a drastic tonal change of pace from the rest of the series. The atmosphere in it is so eerie and strange. This intro scene does a great job of setting the mood. The color palette is grey and washed-out. There's no upbeat jazz music. The drone that starts at 1:15 is all you get as far as a "soundtrack" is concerned. It's apropos for one of the more disturbing antagonists featured on the show.
@@HOLDENPOPE Easy to see since Cowboy Bebop inspired a lot in RWBY like Avatar. The 1st episode of RWBY where Ruby is introduced is very similar to the Cowboy Bebop movie intro.
I know most people's favorite session is Mushroom Samba, but I've always loved the simplicity of this one. It's just Spike fighting a crazy serial killer.
Honestly, this is one of the scenes that convinced me in the storytelling powers of Anime. I mean, put these moments on a live action set and it would be talked about for decades. The shadow work as he attacks, the tight perspectives and damn...The lack of background music to instead focus on that single haunting note, becoming more and more intense along with Spike's anxiety, and finally breaking along with the possibly deadly blast...*chef's kiss*
Zeros also saves his life in Heavy Metal Queen. Had he not gotten a ride from VT because of Zeroes vouching for him, he may very well have been later blown up like Faye was by Deckard’s bombs.
This episode has the best animation in all the series. The effects, the detailed scenario, the frames per second, etc. Everything looks so fresh. This should make a today animator feel so envious.
Guys, we're missing the important point here! Spike was drinking alcohol IN A BAR and was simultaneously conceal carrying a pistol! Talk about a law breaker.
Mad Pierrot; one of the few villains in this show who was actually a match for Spike, and gave our green-haired protagonist a run for his money. Whereas most of the villains (with a few exceptions) were a joke, Mad Pierrot stands alone. Because he actually managed to hurt Spike, and came close to killing him. That's what I call formidable. And like MD Geist, Mad Pierrot is a total psycho.
@@MatthewTheWolf2029 yeah, i didn't count him cause he is not a villain at all, but yeah he is a great fighter and was dominating Spike , him and Vincent Volaju are the best fighters in the cowboy bebop univers, both dominated Spike in hand to hand fight, i don't count Pierro since he is a superhuman, Vincent and Lutfen fought Spike with their natural skills, not some weird super powers. Vicious can put up a fight agains Spike but he will never beat him in a fair fight,Every time Spike and Vicious fought, Spike was hurt or outnumbred , in a fair fight Spike would always beat Vicious.
I remember being sincerely frightened for Spike in this. Really awesome episode that totally came out of left field! Very creeped out by this the first time I saw this.
This is easily Spike's most difficult and unwinnable fight. What a chad to face a literal nightmare. Jeet kun do in one hand, Jericho in the other, and his wit in between.
I love this episode sm, it doesnt have any music while they fight, there isnt some 10 seconds where the character is talking to himself its just pure panic and shit. It looks pretty realistic than most animes potray fighting

Crazy Pete is more fitting for English I think.
I was shocked throughout the whole episode, the animation is insane as well as the direction of the fight scenes and the effects they used. Not to mention the uncanny music that fits the atmosphere amazingly. Cowboy bepop is a certified classic masterpiece even after 25 years
The way Le Fous fades away at the end is so eary
My man Pierrot got Spike on a Tekken juggle 🤣
Nothing scared me more than watching this, late at night as a kid.
Wrong place wrong time
Mad Pierrot was the most scariest out of the series
I think this was the first time Spike had been genuinely challenged in a long time, hence why he was so visibly afraid
I don't think that he was scared ,he is too badass to fear someone ,he was impressed and worried but not scared
@@tb90321he was scared
@@tb90321just look at that guy even viscous would be scared
easily one of the best battles in this legendary anime, and it's only the beginning of course, !MADNESS IS A BLAST¡.
Shinichiro Watanabe must've played a shitload of Tekken 2 back in the day.
This for me was perhaps the best episode of Bebop with the exception of the last episode because this was the first time that we have ever seen Spike actually be worried and even scared.
:50 if that teeth clench always unnerved the hell outta me. My teeth sting just hearing it.
The episode where I went from liking Bebop to unconditional love
2:06 Spike looks absolutely terrified
I love how his cane is rifled 1:24. Interesting weapon.
EdMcStinko poor cat😹😹😹
Like Roman Torchwick from RWBY, maybe they based it off Pierrot's.
@@HOLDENPOPE Easy to see since Cowboy Bebop inspired a lot in RWBY like Avatar. The 1st episode of RWBY where Ruby is introduced is very similar to the Cowboy Bebop movie intro.
when you're exploring as a beginner in a game but accidentally encounter an enemy 30 levels above you.
1:05 juggling Spike in the air like a Smash Bros fight.
I know most people's favorite session is Mushroom Samba, but I've always loved the simplicity of this one. It's just Spike fighting a crazy serial killer.
Best episode of any series ever. Brilliant.
01:05 Co-co-co-co-co-combo breaker. This was too humiliating
Pierrot needs to be in a fighting game with those juggling combos

The very being that had saved Spike's life that ill-fated night.
I dunno why that part with Spike getting fucked up mid-air is so brutal but geeze.
Man I know his jaw hurt. Dude got kicked in the face about 5 times by a psychopath with Timbs. Spikes chin is durable.
1:02 One of my favourite bits in this fight is Pierrot leering in Spike’s face. It’s childish, yet terrifying.
That and the way you can hear his teeth strain from the pressure when he smiles perfectly showcase just how insane he is.
Pierrot Le Fou is the physical embodiment of chaos reminding Spike he's just a man caught up in a storm he can't fight, only endure until it subsides.
Pierrot looks like an antagonist from a Regular Show episode.

When you see that your character build is working
Guys, we're missing the important point here! Spike was drinking alcohol IN A BAR and was simultaneously conceal carrying a pistol! Talk about a law breaker.
andrew dreyer He's a Bounty Hunter, its obvious that he would carry a gun with him.
@@szymonbober2280 That's the joke buddy.
i mean, this does take place in the year 2070... so maybe the laws are different
@@quannnic *2071
Is this in the USA, because if it is then the crime is probably that he didn't fire the pistol after taking a drink.
I cant stop thinking about the fact pierrot looks like the monopoly man mixed with a cartoon character-
One of my favorite scenes of all times
Mad Pierrot; one of the few villains in this show who was actually a match for Spike, and gave our green-haired protagonist a run for his money. Whereas most of the villains (with a few exceptions) were a joke, Mad Pierrot stands alone. Because he actually managed to hurt Spike, and came close to killing him. That's what I call formidable. And like MD Geist, Mad Pierrot is a total psycho.
There is only 3 villains who put up a fight agains spike : Vicious,Mad pierro and Vincent volaju form the movie
@@tb90321 And let's not forget Ed's father Appledelhi. Although he wasn't really a villain so much as he was a neutral party. But he counts.
@@tb90321 But Pierro counts.
Idk why but when i Noticed some DARK CHANGE in the Animation it was scary for me Although the Episode was Just insane.. Gosh I love Cowboy Bebop
My favorite episode feels like a whole 2 hour movie on a dark rainy night when you can’t see the moon that good.
What got me to watch Bebop.
+jowston100 Something good enough for you to like it. if you do?
+JustinReznor I like alot of things. I just don't look them up on youtube.
Yup was the first one I accidentally saw on Adult swim
I remember being sincerely frightened for Spike in this. Really awesome episode that totally came out of left field! Very creeped out by this the first time I saw this.
Such a good episode, just love him walking in accidentally on the most dangerous hit man around and the calamity of it is amazing
One of my favorite and first episode I remember watching of cowboy bebop
easily the most intense moment in the series
The first episode I saw on a late sleepless night and I was instantly hooked, I remember buying the complete edition online the same week.
This episode stuck in my head since I was a kid. True art.
I never understood why Spike casually entered an area from which a huge amount of gunfire was heard. And then looked surprised. Did he have his AirPods up to max?
The type of episode you see in a 200 episode anime
My guy straight up hit Spike with some Tekken physics during his combo

Spike's face saying "Just another monday"
