How Dangerous is Pantheon? w/ Creative Director Chris "Joppa" Perkins

- I had the distinct pleasure and opportunity to run around Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen, the upcoming MMORPG from Visionary Realms with the Creative Director of the game. Chris "Joppa" Perkins.
The session was almost 2 hours so I've gone ahead and broken it up into two parts. This part focuses on showcasing different areas of the world as it is now in Season 2, exploring some of the zone design philosophy of Pantheon and talking about what's to come.
I'd be remiss if I didn't say that this moment is surreal to me. I first got to see Pantheon while watching @CohhCarnage and later others do Developer guided streams. I still to this day think of Jim Lee and associate him with Pantheon.
To now be able to be a part of that? To do the very thing that inspired me back on 2017 to become a content creator...I'm at a loss. Thank you all because you are the reason I'm at this point.

The more this game is revealed and opened up, the more I absolutely love it. The only down side is the fact it just makes me want it more and makes the wait that much harder, lol.
Lovely video my guy. So happy you got to do this finally. =) Let's be real, it's been a long time coming! But things are happening and I'm so glad you're a part of it.
I'm so excited that you got to do this interview! 🎉
Thank you so much, Josgar! I feel very lucky, it was so much fun.
Man the music as you walked into mad run was so good
I wanted to make sure you all got to hear the music and ambient noises
That was rad, thanks for sharing your excitement, and nice to see a small preview of upcoming new content :D
It was well deserved my friend. Thanks for getting us a sneak peak. It looks a lot better than I expected. Hopefully the systems will be good as well!
Thank you so much! I've been enjoying it. There's one system I really want to see back in soon: perception. I talk to him in another video I'll be releasing soon.
I still play prey every so often. Love that game
Are you talking about the 2017 Prey or the earlier Prey that had a native American young man as the main character. The original Pry is about UFO abduction and it has Art Bell's "Coast to Coast AM" as a story telling device. Very clever technique. Unfortunately the game is hard to find anywhere legally.
@@dupre7416 I was talking about the 2017 I didn't know about the earlier one now I want to find it and try it out. Ty for that info.
Great video man, loved this! Glad you got the recognition you deserve and the opportunity to do this with Joppa. Thanks for sharing 🙂 keep up the great work.
Great as always. You got a sneak peek! Love the footage. Love the interaction with Joppa. Actually made me think of the videos with Cohh.
exactly what I thought of too MoR
At first with the artstyle changeover I wasn’t sure about it as far as where it was going. However, it looks like it’s starting to come together and thats good.
Same feeling I had. I can see it coming together though + it's grown on me. I really can't wait to see the ogre though.
I disagree completely
It's a good art style. It's starting to come together, especially with the new lighting changes. It reminds me of playing in a cartoon... but one I actually like. Like Avatar or Vox Machina or some such.
Seasons are great for these alpha tests
Love them I play everyday now
Great video Red! I agree, for the first time in a long time, it feels like Pantheon is actually reaching that vision.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Great stuff man. Congrats. We can tell how much it means to you. Not "lucky", well-deserved.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that.
It is great to see your channel growing. You have put in lots of work.
Greatly appreciate your kindness. More work to come! Onward and upward.
AWESOME thanks Flynn
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love the look of Mad Run. I am really hoping they add cacoons in the webs and on the floor. Even better if you can interact with them and find corpses or some minor items left by a long dead adventurer. That would really amp up the creepy factor of the area.
This is really awesome, its nice to see that the game is hard and you need each other to kill anything. Just like Everquest days
Wait until you see part 2. I got Joppa killed...a lot
congrats red you have made it you have arrived you now are the guy who were were watching that inspired you lets keep watching and see where you go from here
Happy for you friend.
I've been playing 5+ years, and the last builds are awesome. Beards face when he sees the frosty mountain.. 😂
Awesome! You deserve the success. 👌
OMG!!!!! that was awesome! congrats on getting to talk with Joppa, and asking questions for all of us!
Thank you so much! It was a joy.
Me too. I got a nice cup of tea while waiting.
That sounds very cozy
Very sweet
Still looking forward to this games release. Thank you
Me too!
Rip Brad McQuaid one of the mmo Greats
This kind of opportunity is absolutely incredible and a dream come true for many. Keep up the good work!
Can’t wait for this game
Honestly my friend, thank you. Thank you for sticking around when so many others didn't. Thank you for being patient when so many people were so unreasonably angry. Thank you for giving me a place to be excited about this game. Even when it was frustrating.
People waited for over 5 years, then they started doing completely different game, scrapped it because of the amount of discourse and then completely changed the art style of the game.
People who backed the game are 100% right to feel like they did not deliver the promise
@@Dewulfi EQ players for many years: "Graphics don't matter, gameplay is what matters."
Pantheon fanbase: "THESE GRAPHICS SUUUUUUUCK!"
@@mercster I think its not that they suck, because the graphics dont suck. What I heard people say many times over, is the cartoony, warcrafty look and feel to the graphics, inst the direction they were sold on from the start.
The game has been in development for a very long time, and still doesnt have a release date. Monsters and memories has accepted no outside funding and is releasing in 2026. Although I wouldnt get angry over any game, especially an MMO, people have a right to be concerned, and critical of the development for the game. Its just taken far too long for this type of game. It appears to lack a clear vision.
@@StageCoachMedia3656 Do you hear yourself? You just said "It's not that graphics matter, it's that graphics matter."
Super pumped for this! I hope to catch it live
Hope to see you there bud! Thanks for being awesome
Deeply unsettling, I love it!
Nicely done. Really enjoyed it.
Looking forward to this.
Very excited to share it with you all!
What a fun conversation! 🥰
Dude you deserve this so much. I wish all content creators were like your channel. You do an amazing job.
I agree with you 💯. He makes me want to play every game he looks into. I love the fact that he is big on EQ as well
I started to make a side chat comment but then the video stopped and my commenting ability was gone. So, I'll restart here:
1st) So very happy you finally got a chance to do a one-on-one video with Joppa! You've earned it.
2nd) This was a superb video. I had played Pantheon a great deal today, since I was off work and the weather's been lousy here. My monk made a complete set of cured armor for my shaman, and I did a ton of quests. But today felt a little grindy...something I truly dislike...and your video brought the joy, the positivity and the visible progress of Terminus back to me and I wanted to say 'thank you' for that. It was like the old days of my following Pantheon.
3rd (and blessedly... finally) The main reason this video was just so, so, SO good, better than anything I've seen Joppa do before, and maybe even better than anything I've seen YOU do before...was...the easy low-key flowing conversational nature of the entire video. It was so obvious how thrilled you were to be there, and of how thrilled he was to show you the new areas, all the while knowing how much you appreciated and understood it. It was like two life-long friends meeting over coffee (or wine) and just having the time of their lives sharing events, memories, and hopes. Really well done, a better tone with Joppa than Minus or even Sav have pulled off to date.
PS, When Joppa teleported away at the end, when he took you to "the marbles" area, I thought for sure he had turned aggro on when he left so you got swarmed. Oh well, can't have everything! :)
Great video, Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
A legend talking to another Legend

Nice. Thank you.
Thank you for watching!
I completely wrote off Pantheon for years because I just wasn't buying into their concept or what I saw of the execution, but I'm at the point now where I actually kind of want to try it out.
It's been a ton of fun so far. Seasons has been a great way to expand the game. And with the nda drop there's a lot more streams and content creators out there who can show different sides of the game
That was pretty cool.
Having devs go through the world with you in an mmo is such a surreal thing that I think a lot of people don't appreciate the value of.
I didn't know quaternity was a thing. Maybe that was before my time 😅
Any chance of spiders dropping from above? 😮
That was GReat Thanks Red thanks
I'm a little late to the party, but this was an awesome video! Really wish I was high enough level for Mad Run, but I'll get there! It's a special thing when one starts to realize that their dreams are coming true, way to go Mr. RedBeard =).
I would love to see the spiders be able to crawl on the walls! I feel like that's never done in MMO's for some reason.
I thought about that while I was in there. I imagine it causes significant aggro challenges for a multi-player game where wall aggro is already and issue but it would be cool
Holy snikies! Grats beard!
Thank you so much! It's surreal! I keep using that word but doing one of the big things that inspired me to make content in the first place is nuts
Dominion abilities and that whole mentality it's pretty cool! Imagine if you get Resurrected put a bad guy has control of your corpse and it's using it to kill people
Adding utility to all of the classes sounds like what I'm hearing. I don't mind not necessarily having crowd control but adding more and more choices for a class like the wizard to help a group control a situation makes a lot of sense
Meh. Strays from the original vision by Brad
@@kingragnork no. He was really into it. Vanguard demos what im talking about.
@@kingragnork For example, the Sorc could apply a damage ward to a group member. Lots of stuff like that allowed a group to survive things by coordinating utility abilities
I want to go there tooooooooo!!!
I'm really curious about Season 3 and what it will bring besides Hangore.
You just made me think of a great question for the QA
I'm glad Pantheon is opening up more. I'm cautiously excited to see how it goes.
Maybe in 50 years they'll enter closed alpha
Nice stream ❤
Thanks for watching!
Interesting. You say "guck" for Guk. I always read it more like cook with a g.
I'm still middling on the graphic overall, but I'm not mad at the views and level/world design.
The environmental art is great imo. The character models will be worked on and sorely need it. Man the view at the end looking into hangore with the mountain peeking above the plateau was really ncie
Outro gave me chills. Great video. So happy for you man. Wish I had the creativity/motivation to grow myself. Keep it up dude.
@@Redbeardflynn you're awesome man!!
Red My daughter and I have watched you from private accounts now for some time. First drawn under eq and tlp servers. As we moved from gamers to game developers, you have been with us. You make not have felt the love for us under those names but we are still here. We now own books by Red bead (amazon owes you a few dollars) We hope one day you review our website and maybe our title. You have earned these things from the industry and community because you just a honest good dude (well much as we get to see :) Your thoughts and insight always strikes me dead on as your own and not a reconstruct to make content. I guess what I am sayins is I am NOT just a CEO I am a fan and we think you have a bright future. We here actually hope in our minds one day redbeards going to review us or put our name out there. So chin up ma man you earned it all.
Great job with this video:)
One of the more enjoyable I’ve seen yet on Pantheon honestly. Good mix of interview and exploration
So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words.
So glad you got this interview. You told him exactly how i feel about the game. Not quite there, but it definitely feels like it'll be great.
Got to play with a couple friends of mine and when our time was up, we all wished we could log back in and keep going!
Web Slow down factor is amazing
I have stepped back from Pantheon, any news on the Gnomes or an new images?
Whatever happened to project faethale that they were working on over 4 F'N YEARS AGO?! Like where is that at dude....
Well I'm excited. Reminds me of when I started playing EQ in 2001, but with graphics I'd expect from modern day. Can't wait for moar ^_^
I get that feeling of wonder seeing new area in game for sure.
I keep saying Pantheon should simply shoot for a much smaller goal. People are very happy to play these one or two zones. Why not just make the game One Continent at the start. Cap it at lev 40. Don't worry about raids at launch. Just give us crafting, leveling, dungeons, and the races and classes to get started. You get the game out Much faster. Gives people time to level a couple characters while they work on the Other Two continents, Raids, and end game AFTER they get a playable game on the table. it's a win win for everyone involved. We get a new MMO that we can play. They have a Much easier starting goal. Just start simple. add more Later.
So this game is not dead? Nice!!!
"We should have done this sooner" translation: We are actually making money. Im glad they took my advice, but im sure i was just one of many.
I wonder if enchanters will be able to solo like in eq
Enchanters are probably the worst solo class in Pantheon. I don’t know how you play EQ solo as an enchanter pre-merc era.
theres plenty of mmo where the game is made to be solo. WoW or FFXIV might be better suited for your needs. Going in panteon with the idea of soloing is the wrong mindset
Some classes can solo. It’s still far from the best exp but possible. Shaman, paladin, classes with some sort of heal. Or wizard trying to kill before getting killed.
@@charlesminckler2978 I soloed as enchanter from 1-60 in eq they are the ultimate solo class. Had to be very careful and have situational awareness as the charms would break so you’d have to fight mobs at max range then once charm broke you mez mob then pbaoe broke charm pet then mez then retash and charm.
Or if it got super hairy you’d mindwipe everything and invis yourself and con everything praying for indifference. Lol
Yes it’s a slow methodical route but very rewarding
After finally trying Pantheon, I guess I wasn't too impressed for the amount of time it has been in production. I never got that big urge to log in and play After hearing they are emphasizing needing crowd control, Im even less excited. Many people may love the direction they are heading, unfortunately I am not one of them. That is awesome the devs took the time to personally show you the game though. I really hope they have a successful game, and I am looking forward to seeing the progression of it.
That's fair, and I think it's important to get an idea of what you want in a game. The Quaternity is going to be a big part of this game and Monsters and Memories but its used a loss less in other games, including some I'm optimistic about like Corepunk and Pax Dei. Still not sure what to expect with others like Ghost but I'd assume holy trinity.
What's a game you are interested in, either a current one or one thats in dev?
Cheers, Paul.
Well. There's plenty of other mmos where you don't have to worry about crowd control these days, that is pretty much all of them. Personally at this point it's a breath of fresh air.
@@Redbeardflynn I was 100 dollars excited about Pantheon, and I think as they progress towards launch, they will clean up some things that turn me off to the game, so I haven't given up yet. I think the one I am most excited about is Ashes of Creation. They are really dragging their feet too, but the game play looks fantastic. To be totally honest, I dont think Ill ever see a MMO that I will enjoy as much as Everquest.
@@via_negativa6183 While I agree with you, but my issue with the needing CC just to do regular content is the more classes they make "needed" to do content, the more time non-needed stand around LFG. The non-needed classes always make up the greater majority of the MMO. The fun of MMOs is playing them, not sitting around begging for a group. I have no issues with CC being needed in raid type settings though.
Were is the implied lore? EQ had lore and interesting monsters such as orc camps or Darkpaw. I am tired of seeing nothing but pests in Pantheon such as spiders, or bats, or snakes. Pets don't make interesting lore, monsters or a world. Does anyone see any interesting areas to explore, populated villages, or interesting monsters? I am not seeing any.
Want an example of a monster that made EQ feel real? Hill Giants. Those guys would smash you in one hit and shake the ground. Lower guk and its undead frogs were also a creative and cool monster type. I don't see any creativity in the game.
the design philosophy was "we have no money left quick we need to release some garbage and sell some copies"
Imaginary things are not scary.
I'm scared of my own shadow sometimes tbf
I say this it looks great and all. This is coming from someone that knows it's not my game. Like Nathan said last night There is EverQuest fans and players and there Games like EverQuest 2 & World of warcraft and there fans and players and I'm on that side. A EQ2 or WoW player will not like Pantheon. Sadly
I think that's a pretty good read. It's hard to say exactly where this will fall because while playing the world and the danger evokes everquest, same with a lot of the combat mechancis (the quaternity for example) but the use of skills is much faster than Everquest, more like WoW Classic...or maybe FFXIV. Still trying to pin it down myself but I know I'm having fun.
Cheers, Matt!
Original eq2 players I think will like it. They changed it so much to be like wow. That's what drove me away.
@@Redbeardflynn My main issue past everything is the fact that a Game like Ember adrift a smaller Development team then Pantheon can have a Map system in their game and the way Jobba sounds like a Map system in this Game over my dead body. That is 1 & the first Question I would of ask then depending on his answer Ended the whole thing because I already know the answer. No Map system even a hand draw like Ember Adrift is a No. in 2024 that a big Fail on any MMORPG.
@@thawol9227 EQ2 never Drove me away completely EQN and the Cancel of it ended my stay
@@mattstansbeary3068 I think they'll probably have similar maps (fog of war style static maps) to my knowledge the hard no on maps is radar and minimaps to encourage players to look at their surroundings and use landmarks. I could be wrong on that but I think thats the plan. Could be a good QA question for April, though.
Would have peaked my interest if it arrived, fully complete 10 years ago, this 'game' will never launch, if a miracle happened and it did...well it looks terrible.
It's not for you and that's totally fine! Hopefully there will be another mmo out there you can enjoy
A money dump that will never be released much less have anyone playing it.
What game are you currently playing and enjoying?
Scrapped the hole game, some of the team hasnt showed their face at all, the art looks like the backside of a dumpster that was onfire and already put out a week ago but just left to rot. O and theirs the old player poopsocking problem like on p99 . i asked what was going to be done about the poopsocking and was banned from speaking after i paid vip . all i asked if there was going to be something done about it and silenced! at this point its a scam imho. feels like eq2 but with poopsocking neckbeards controlling who levels or makes money end game , kinda like wow but waaaay more poopsocky, so much so that wow doesnt even have poopsockers in comparison or compared to p99 , pantheon takes the poopsocking medal for krono farming neckbeards and crappy fps art work , the old artwork looked soooOOoo much better AND it was already made... go figure...but hey its not a scam right?
Red sounds like someone who didn't get the Christmas present they wanted but wants to show good manners. Pantheon is cringe.
I thought so too but when I tried the beta last week, I found it to be kinda refreshing.
Couldn't be more wrong about my experience. This was an incredible moment for me. I am genuinely grateful and excited and loving what I'm seeing from pantheon.
I guess it depends on how much $ you have donated/given to VR. Lol
One day, slack, one day I'll get you in Pantheon and enjoying it with me! :) Probably before I finish the Dark alliance playthrough tbh...
😂@@Redbeardflynn
Dude this isn't the same game in development as the one they had when Brad McQuaid was still alive they ruined this games development it's absolutely ridiculous too. I think they pocketed some of the funds they had available after his passing
Is this a April Fools joke ? It looks like trash.
return to Ashes of scamation
It's not for you ans that's ok. I love it tho. Cheers.
I'm a bit tired about hearing of the philosophy instead of the manifestation of the actual game itself. Still looks raw after 10 years...
The one thing I'd say is that philosophy is something that never goes away (or shouldn't) EQ is still talking about their philosophy 25 years on. It's your core principles of your game and what decision making should come back to.
As for the game as it is now? it's got a satisfying gameplay loop as is but there are missing things that are core components that I hope come in soon: The perception system coming back key among them. Other than that, the game feels more than playable, its fun.
@@Redbeardflynn Philosophy without action is meaningless. Especially in this instance, it's like discussing the philosophy of the philosophy of the idea for a game that still isn't. Which is absurd. They've been talking about theory for 7+ years.
I've seen enough hours of testers to know that's not true. The game doesn't look fun atm. Not at all.
@@trustyWeedGuy it's not for you then and that's totally fine.
@@Redbeardflynn Sigh... So easy to say that without facing the truth of the matter.
It was supposed to be for me, and so many others like myself who enjoyed Vanguard. I've been following this project since year 1, with the Jim Lee streams... If this game weren't for people like me, I wouldn't still be here listening to Joppa.
But c'mon man, from all the indie MMOs out there, none has devolved so much like this one. Every other team/project is pushing forward but Pantheon.
Sooner or later, things will naturally fall into place. You can't just say 'this ain't for you then' to ppl who disagree with the state of the... 'barely a game'. Because an MMO like this, that's already catering to a niche of similar players like us, can't survive by pushing former believers away.
Too many years of theory crafting, philosophy discussions, and barely anything to show for. But, alas, copium is a strong drug.
@@trustyWeedGuy I think that's where we'll just have to disagree, as a fan of vanguard and everquest, what I've played of pantheon. Actually played, not heard about, has been what I've been waiting for and wanting. That's why I say it sounds likenits not for you because it's a tangible game heading I'm the right direction and I'm enjoying myself playing it already and looking forward to more.
If you haven't had the opportunity to play yet, I hope you get to so you can decide for yourself whether it's the game for you. And if it turns out it's not, that really sucks, I know the feeling well. Legends of Aria and Crowfall are two prime examples for me of games I had high hopes for that came crashing down extremely hard.
Wherever pantheon goes in the next few years, it's been delivering the core gameplay I've wanted since I first watched those same Jim Lee and cohh carnage streams. The only things in missing from that right now is all the zones + the playable races + perception being back in
