Yes! This is the future of drawing out our ideas/thinking about design. I teach drawing architecture, and I do use Procreate for the practice. Thank you for the channel. I'll recommend this to my students. I've been only using iPads July 2018 starting with the regular iPad 2018 with Pencil support. Now it's the larger 12.9 iPad Pro 2018. Procreate is just heaven to use, and just hope they put in the proper scaling tool in a future update.
Hey thanks for watching, more videos coming soon! Yes, the Apple Pencil was a gamechanger for me. I do use Morpholio Trace to set up initial scale for some of my drawings, otherwise the grid in Procreate works fine. Let me know if you have any requests for what I should cover in future videos.
Thanks for your earlier email and thanks for this great post on how you use Procreate. I also love and use this app and found it to be the very best for Ipad Pro as well.

Hey sorry, yeah I've started a few new videos...have just been swamped lately. Working on a huge project right now, has been taking up most of my nights and weekends...will try to get back into this after our deadline in Sept.
@@DigSketch much respect, being an Architect as well, i must say i totally understand. i look fwd to September, got my notifications turned on so i will know if your lying ..jk.Lol
I'm happy that your channel is dedicated to the specific style and use of the ipad. Of course, it may one day be better for you to expand the contents more for various viewers. Anyhow, as I mostly do sketch works on pictures or video scenes this is really helpful!
Hey thanks for watching! Yes I'm an architect and right now I'm trying to create a set of videos that covers how I use the iPad in my profession (that's all I really know, I'm not really an expert with digital painting, or other art forms). But I'd be happy to expand it to other disciplines that may be related. Let me know if you have any specific suggestions and I'll definitely look into it!
Could you use this app to say to produce a full set of drawings for a small domestic project. I use sketchup so it interesting that it works with it to work back and forth.
great video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Looking forward to seeing more. I don't have the ipad pro but I think I can manage w the air. One thing I didn't get clear is how to get/import drawings to scale. ANy way to get around it without using CAD or Photoshop. Can't afford either. Also how did you get your grid background? thanks again.
There are various ways to import to scale, with varying levels of precision. If you bring in a drawing it needs to have some kind of reference scale so you can just manually scale it. You need to set your paper size, and set the scale of the grid in Procreate. I use Procreate's grid, but also have my own custom grid I created in Procreate. Will go over all this and share my grid file in a future video. Also instead of Photoshop, try Affinity Photo. Our company (a huge multinational architecture firm) is making this transition as Adobe seems to be taking advantage of its monopoly. I've been playing with Affinity and it seems to do what I need it to do. Still getting familiar with it though.
Morpholio Trace is buggy and lags. The accidental rotations disrupts the workflow. I appreciate some of its tools, but Procreate takes the lead in drawing with ease and responsiveness.
Yes! Completely agree. I am working on a video on how I use Morpholio Trace (really just for the scale tool), but the other aspect that is poorly designed is their layer system. As an architect, the buildings I work on typically have more than one floor, and I need to be able to align these floors in layers on top of each other to work on common vertical elements across each floor. Its just so much easier to do this in Procreate.
DigSketch hmmm.. I Have you been able to workaround that Scaling step on Procreate? Are you using Morpholio Trace just to scale and then exporting to Procreate? this issue is really important, imo. thanks

Hello, thank you for the video! Very helpful. I wonder if there's a tool in procreate which automatically calculated centimeters and meters when drawing a line for floor planning like some software has. Do you know of it?
no, Procreate is more like photoshop, just a good drawing tool. Morpholio Trace has more precise measuring tools. But for concept drawings in Procreate I just set up a background grid to scale, much faster to reference that for dimensions. Will be covering this is an upcoming video

Bringing in a drawing and scaling it in Procreate is not great. It does have a customizable scale, so you can do it, but it just takes some eye-balling and is not easy to get exactly right, so may not be too precise. Better to prepare it with precision in PS at a specific size, then create a Procreate drawing at that size and import it, then auto-scale it up to full page.

The only iPads that currently support Apple Pencil are all of the iPad Pros, the newest IPad Air, and the iPad 6th gen. They are listed by price, highest to lowest. If you want something practical as well as powerful, I would go for the iPad Air or the new 11 inch iPad Pro...
Sorry I just used google translate to read your question- but I made my own custom grid background with the major/minor lines in Photoshop, and just imported it into Procreate
Hmm... I couldn't find a way to set the color to a custom brush. You can pretty much set every other property besides color. This would be a nice feature though, something to bring up to the Procreate team
@ oh yes you're right, sorry didn't realize that's what Tomas was asking about. Procreate does have its own grid, but I also have my own custom grid "paper" background I created in Photoshop. It's pretty easy to make yourself, but I'm happy to share mine for those who want it. It's only for a few specific paper sizes I commonly use though.
I'll make a short video about this specifically. But for now, go to Settings (the Wrench icon)/ Canvas/ Drawing Guide - turn it on, then go to Edit Drawing Guide- set it to a 2D grid. Then go to Settings/ Prefs/ Gesture Controls/ Assisted Drawing- select the 4th option which turns on Assisted Drawing when you press the Quick Menu button with the Apple Pencil.

So I am want to study architecture I have not yet started but my brother studies industrial design. He was looking for a very powerful laptop so that he can do 3D models and renders. This leads me to my question for an architecture student do I need a laptop or can I live with an iPad to carry around but have a powerful pc at home? Other alternatives are welcome.
I study architecture and while it is fun to get work done on the iPad, you WILL need a proper PC. However, so far we have barely rendered or used any heavy applications on the go. Usually we are told to do those things at home. You should have some sort of Laptop for on the go work anyway. I often meet up with friends after Uni to work on small CAD projects or ID which (for now) you cannot do on an iPad. It is a nice addition to a Laptop, however, it wont replace it yet. I'd settle for a powerful PC at home and a less powerful laptop. The iPad is amazing but the 1000 Dollars are better spent on the Laptop. My experience, can't assure you it'll be the same for you.
That's difficult for me to answer, as I was in school about 20 years ago! I strictly use Photoshop on the Wacom, have just been using it for decades now. Played around with Autodesk Sketchbook a while back, but am just too comfortable with Adobe's products for this kind of stuff.
DigSketch it totally is, but I’m more talking about how to set it up so that you can press on the middle button and make it so that all the lines you draw automatically become straight lines. But the way, what an awesome video, with such beautiful drawings
@@frontlinebreakthrough5723 oh hey my bad- yes you can totally do that. Under Settings/ Prefs/ Gesture Controls, toggle on the first "Tap" option at the top. Hey buddy, I dont have much experience with a surface book 2. But one thing I love is being able to airdrop a photo from my phone to my ipad and to my macbook. I'm all Apple at home, but all PC at work. At the office I just have a Wacom Cintiq.
Great video and it's really great to see that Procreate can be so flexible for many different styles. I say we all should boycott Adobe with their lame subscriptions and go with Procreate 4 life :) Also i would love to see your 2D/3D workflow.
DigSketch i actually switch to Serif software, along with Procreate and a couple of other apps. The only one i keep from when i got into Architecture..is Autodesk’s Sketchbook (now sketchbook pro)..which still has Procreate beat in a few..small details. no app is perfect, evidently. Anyway....2D/3D workflow would be excellent, as i often start sketching in 3D directly. i started with SketchUp, but i am now moving to ArchiCAD & Rhino. I have been looking for my base workflow, as i feel once i get the gist of it, i’m gonna start making up for the lost time (these past handful of years) i haven’t been drawing. thank you so much for your channel.. as it has been a MAJOR factor in me moving forward. i stumble upon it yesterday...and i am binge watching all your videos. ;) . So far..my main gripe with Procreate and any other sketching software...is the ability to stay within SCALE.. U also mention this on another video. As i am not a Photoshop user..i am still to totally grasp how u did it.. I’m pretty sure Affinity Photo will allow me to scale it just the same.. What do you reckon? ps: what software, other than Adobe stuff, Procreate and SketchUP are you using ? what’s your CAD software of choice? thanks again

also ... on a side note here ... do you know of any way to "snap" to a grid pattern when drawing lines or objects ?? thanks - if you do know how.
I'm not aware of snap in Procreate. But really I don't think you need it once you turn on the grid and use drawing assist
Do you use or recommend a screen protector for a more “paper” feel?
I have it, and I really love it, so I would recommend it!
Hola, que programa es ese?
Se llama Procreate y es para ios
@@EM-bj5vd Gracias!!
Gracias!!
Thanks for answering that, my Spanish is a little rusty!
what iPad is that ?
1st gen iPad Pro
which ipad you use ?
this is the 1st gen iPad Pro
@@DigSketch Are you going to be making more of these tutorial videos? they would be super helpful for me, starting from a basic setting up the Ipad/procreate/sketchup for Architectural drawing. I find Procreate really overwhelming to learn so if you were able to show us tutorials on such a specific use as drafting then I think these things would sink in much better.
What software do you use when working on your Wacom? I have a Wacom monitor and am looking for software options. I currently use Autodesk sketchbook.
I strictly use Photoshop on the Wacom, have just been using it for decades now. Played around with Autodesk
Sketchbook a while back, but am just too comfortable with Adobe's products for this kind of stuff.
Super
What pad are you using?
IPad Pro 1st gen I think. May be upgrading to the new iPad soon though
sound volume is too low
Hello from Russia) how many GB do you have on you ipad ??
kate loskutova 128GB
sorry,, is this ipad 6.0 (2018)?
it's the 1st generation ipad pro
How do you set up the drawing straight lines things?
It's called Assisted Drawing. I specifically go over that in this video at 4:53, let me know if it isn't clear
Be sure you have already turned on the grid(Canvas/Drawing Guide) so Assisted Drawing is active, otherwise this wont work. The middle button will now just toggle Assisted Drawing on and off. Good question! Thanks
DigSketch thank you!
DigSketch thank you.
i also turned on the shortcuts with the left button and and a 2nd touch . Really! useful.. thanks
it reminds me of the shortcut menu on the Wacom..or even closer..the 3D connexion (3d mouse controllers i use) overlaying shortcuts.
I’m new to Procreate...but in so far..damn.. it’s a solid App !
Is this iPad or iPad Pro ?
Tanta Siripohn Na Rajasima iPad Pro, 2nd generation
Hey pal, one question, what do you feel works better at designing an iPad Pro or a surface book 2?
Hey buddy, I dont have much experience with a surface book 2. But one thing I love is being able to airdrop a photo from my phone to my ipad and to my macbook. I'm all Apple at home, but all PC at work. At the office I just have a Wacom Cintiq.
@@DigSketch ok man thanks for the tip, I am a huge apple user, but lately microsoft is improving a lot it´s hardware
Would you recommend ( for someone begginer ) to get a Wacom Intuos for architecture sketches?
I agree! My workflow over the past few months has actually been transitioning to more iPad, less Wacom
Great video and it's really great to see that Procreate can be so flexible for many different styles. I say we all should boycott Adobe with their lame subscriptions and go with Procreate 4 life :) Also i would love to see your 2D/3D workflow.
Yeah was not happy when adobe switched to the subscription model. Will definitely do a video soon showing my design process between 2D and 3D, thanks!
Are you ok?
you can’t published videos from a long time !
Basically UA-cam money is made by the iPad and Real Architectural work is done on the computer, Sketchup and Wacom.
not necessarily, I use my iPad every day, can't live without it
5 video’s - dedicated.. what happend.. lost dedication.
I have to say the iPad is great for this but... Yeah... Apple.
yeah...apple
