I got a dwarf orinoco for my birthday over a decade ago. Today there's 8 growing in its place from offshoots and I can't count how many clusters of bananas I've got over the years. Never watered, never fertilized, just stuck the original in the ground and ignored it. The only tending is picking apart the dead stalks or propping them up so clusters ripen on the plant.
Hi.Great video you got there. Here's some other things if you'd like to experiment with. Fertilizer programme: Month 1 - 5: 16:16:16 (150g/plant/month) Month 6: MOP (100g/plant - one time application only on month 6 or when you see the last short leaf before flowering comes out) + 12:12:17:2(100g/plant/month) Month 7 till harvest: 12:12:17:2 (150g/plant/month) For the suckers to ensure maximum growth. 2 ways to go around it. Cut and don't dig as to not damage the roots. First: Only keep 1 at 3 months old and another at 8 months old. Second: Only keep one once the flower comes out. Choose only sword suckers as this is the one with vigorous growth rate. As for leaves. Maintain 8 leaves while growing, 6 once the flower comes out and 4(excluding the small leaves before flowering) once you cut the flower. Cut the flower around 2 inch after the last bunch. Just sharing. Happy gardening everyone.
Yes about the cold. I had a Musa basjoo outside this year during the epic Texas freeze with -3° temps and she survived and now thriving. Alao my yellow flower dwarf chinese banana plant is very cold hardy.
We are currently in South Central FL and have the Nam Wahs, true ice creams, Sabas (plantation), cavendish’s and an African rhinos horn! We love our bananas, thanks for the tour! 🤙
@maat son that one was just planted from a pup I bought offline about a month ago. It's still small but seems to be doing well! I'm excited to see how it does. Edit: it is definitely one of the prettiest bananas in the yard. Has beautiful varigation on the smaller leaves and very intense colouration. The stalk is a deep purple.
I have my washing machine drain out to my banana patch and also have my ac/ drain that keeps my patch nice and moist.. I live just out side of Tampa, going to check out the other types you mentioned and the nursery near olando.
+kc chapman That's the way to do it! They love all the extra water. Good luck finding varieties. I find the hunt is half the fun. Share photos at my website if you have any cool ones you'd like to pass on.
This is an awesome video! The only banana that I can grow in NY reliably is Musa basjoo. I’ve had it for 5 years in the ground, and overwintered with a foot of mulch through -15°F! Musa basjoo is not edible, just beautiful... I’m experimenting with velutina, Sikkimensis ‘Red Tiger’
Great work. It's possible to make it happen, but it does take some serious work. In my book Push the Zone: The Good Guide to Growing Tropical Plants Beyond the tropics, I share a lot of stories. A former neighbor in TN used to grow a banana tree in his yard through the warm months, then dig it out and wrap up and keep it in his crawl space through the freezing winter. Dedication!
Love your video, very informative. I live in North Florida just 20 miles from the Alabama border. We get some below freezing temperatures only at nights (generally). What variety could I get that would produce the quickest? Thank you for your videos and information.
I have a 3 foot tall Namah. And I’m trying to decide where to plant it. I have a spot in the backyard that I think will be pretty shielded from Northwind but there is not much of a tree canopy there or I can go in the front yard under Jacaranda tree it may be more exposed to wind there. Any suggestions where to plant this banana? I have a standard size yard in St. Petersburg a couple of miles from the beach. with Mature Jacaranda tree in the front yard and mature avocado and backyard. Thank you
I have yet to get fruit yet. I am expecting to get some this year. My Ice cream banana has done extremely well through freezes. Slow growing. Looking forward to its fruit.
We’re are you guys at?? And can you grow coconuts at your location?? Thank you !!! Also where do you think is a good location to get a acre or two for a good price????????
I've ordered from Florida hill in the past and they mislabeled my order and gave me the wrong plants and I've emailed them a dozen times and no answer. I have zero trust in them now
The last time that I was in Thailand ... ate some bananas that were fully ripe and ready to eat even though the skin was still green ... delicious and nice texture. Anyone knowing where I can get some rootigs?
You need to hand pollinate the female flowers (at the top of the raceme, attached to mini bananas) of one variety to the male flowers (bottom of the raceme, pure flower) of the other variety. You also have to keep a bee/insect proof net or bag around the raceme of the female flowers during the flowering period to prevent bees from introducing unintended pollen from a different source. It’s a lot of work.
+Allen Ash You'll do great with bananas. Give them lots of water and lots of fertility, try a range of varieties. Orinoco, Raja Puri and Cavendish are all pretty reliable... but I would go further and try whatever you can get your hands on. Also consider a banana circle: ua-cam.com/video/ZZSag5aWnYE/v-deo.html
+Greenies Garden Thanks. I was also impressed with Joe's collection. Last week I gave him 5 more varieties to try. He's going to be the banana kingpin of Florida at this rate.
Amazing how will i be able to grt these bad boys for the upcoming next 3 months and get mine in the ground i got 8 acres in suwannee valley im ready for the challenge
I live in Tallahassee in my wife and I are thinking about purchasing the home we would like to know where the banana tree farms are in our area we're willing to travel if necessary thanks
charlie, you might try your local nursery. Walmart, Lowe's & Home Depot sell bananas too. "Florida Hill Nursery" and "Going Bananas" both ship bananas. U might also try Bananas.org
+84Queen of hearts It's an herbaceous plant, meaning non-woody. Not at all related to squash, though. Think of it like a big lily or onion with fruit and you won't be far off.
They like about twice the amount of water we get in Florida - something like 100 inches a year. Regular soakings make them fly. I planted mine in a circle then ran the kitchen sink water into the middle - they loved it.
Hi I live in Jacksonville, where is a good source to buy a few banana trees? I love them and can't find a good place to buy some. You've got a great looking place there I'm jealous. Thanks.
I live in north Florida and have two dwarf cavendish banana trees. I visited a nursery today and was told they won’t bear fruit! I’m bummed about that I’m hoping to get lucky and make them work? Or am I wasting my time and need to hunt down some like yours?
This is the tree I got. I found it ion a trash pile. I planted it and it fell over the same day in the rain. I had to put boards on it to hold it up. Anyways it died and gave me 3 pups. It's still in the ground giving me pups.
+Kirk Ferguson One of my favorite places. Check out the Mosswood Farm Store if you haven't been there yet... tell them you found them via my video. They sell my Florida gardening books there, plus great coffee, seeds and baked goods.
Yes. I have a very heartless post on dealing with squirrels here, but it's not for the tender-souled: www.thesurvivalgardener.com/get-rid-of-squirrels/
Thanks. I like the idea of trapping them. I'm not willing to give my banana tree to the squirrels. Somebody is going to lose and it's not me. :) It's like war with these critters.
+pj snedeker It depends on how long it stays below freezing. Just for a few hours, no big deal. For a day, then the stems are toast and have to grow back from the ground the next year. My bet is yes, you can grow some. I'd tuck them along the south wall of a building for maximum protection.
My grandfather to own a banana farm up near the Queensland border in New South Wales in Australia here :- i2.au.reastatic.net/600x800-resize,extend,r=33,g=40,b=46/fb8ed18a9cc5fbd7ea0444fc5e09a446c560f92adb622e6931c18b4a1de67b75/image5.jpg The bananas were grown behind the house and the sheds as well as across the creek up into the mountains, they made a flying fox out of fence wire, bicycle rims & a hook & rollers which was used to transport the Banana 🍌 bunches across the creek so they could get packed in the banana shed. They were the lady finger variety which was better suited to the subtropical climate & they were sweet tasting bananas as well, further north in Queensland, it's got a more tropical climate & is where the Cavendish bananas are grown up near Cairns because they really need a temperature of 27°C (80°F) to grow all year around. My dad moved 600 kilometres (360 miles) south to find work back 50 years ago which is 150 kilometres (90 miles) North of Sydney (Newcastle area) but some people do grow bananas as a hobby in my area. I bought a couple of lady finger banana 🍌 plants a couple of weekends ago which I want to plant on my new property that I'm going to eventually move to this year some time ! Our plant hardiness zone is USDA 10b or Zone 4 in Australia right from South Sydney in New South Wales to the North of Brisbane in Queensland yet our commercial banana 🍌 growing region extends to Coffs Harbour & technically Kempsey & that's about it, even the lady finger bananas aren't commercially grown in the Newcastle & Sydney areas !
Thanks for watching.

"true ice cream" are you talking about blue java?
Time for a new walk through of this garden.
Caring for plants that produce is so rewarding. I wish i had a land to be self sufficient and feed myself.
Hi Guys, im in tampa area, im looking for a banana tree known for producing! I think they all look nice, what species should I go for?
Nice farm. Love the taros

How do you cross bananas? How do you make a hybrid?
You need to hand pollinate the female flowers (at the top of the raceme, attached to mini bananas) of one variety to the male flowers (bottom of the raceme, pure flower) of the other variety.

Grand naine banana plant produced a racime with nine hands in Jacksonville. Give it a shot
Excellent! Thank you, Nelson. I've never seen plants available for those - would have loved to have tried growing some.
David The Good what kind of bananas are you growing?
Been into bananas for about a year and I love learning more every day. These are some beautiful varieties and I want them all 😆 🤣 😂

The few times it does get below freezing, it's only during the night. So they should be fine?
+pj snedeker They should pull through fine. Go for it!
I wonder if pipe insulation around the stem may work
