The Rise of Protected Bike Lanes

  • Across the country, more Americans are choosing to get around by bike. Cities are encouraging this trend by building protected bikes lanes. Protected bike lanes are on-street bike lanes that are separated from motorized traffic by curbs, planters, parked cars, or posts. Since 2011, the number of miles of protected bike lanes has doubled.

    Protected bike lanes are very effective especially in dense areas! In Berlin we loved this idea so much that we're introducing them too, but Berlin's government is pretty slow. What's even more important is Dutch style intersections, cause those are the most dangerous points.

    I’ve ridden on protected bicycle lanes. I think they’re great when they’re done in a way that makes sense. Madison, WI has very nice bike lanes that takes into account not only the cyclists, but also the effort needed to maintain them. Baltimore started force-feeding protected bike lanes in some areas that most bicyclists ignore because they’re a recipe for wrecking your bicycle. The ridiculously narrow lanes dart in and out of curb cuts and they get covered with debris that the city can’t clear because they made them too narrow.
    In fact, there’s talk about redoing an entire section of these protected lanes because so many cyclists are using the road instead of the poorly designed protected lanes.

    As others have mentioned, there's a wide range of definitions of "protected" bike lanes - from wide, safe road-width off-street trails to narrow pavement lanes with only space and plastic bollards for separation. Dutch and other Europeans take cycling​ - and cycling safety - more seriously IMHO.

    Portland, Oregon has a nice cycle network. My favorite American city to ride around.

    I wish we had these lanes in Salt Lake City,I doubt it will happen, drivers out here are SELFISH and dont like to share the road with anybody!

      Seb K I’m not convinced that it’s happening enough though because if you don’t live in central London or Cambridge you’re basically screwed. I commute by bike but it can be pretty scary which is why you only really see Lycra padded enthusiasts or teenagers being complete idiots on the road. There are very little ordinary adults choosing to bike where I live and I’m not even far from London

    Don't get me wrong, I love protected bike lanes. But I learned how to ride in city traffic as a bike messenger, and I'm very comfortable riding in traffic with cars. I ride pretty fast, and it's easier for me to ride in the street than it is to ride in a bike lane with pedestrians stepping in front of you.

    Protected bikes lanes all over American cities please. Build quality infrastructure that connects useful destinations and the people will use it. Reduce the sound and exhaust from cars by making biking a convenient mode of transit.

    I support that we as a community encourage everyone to ride their bikes the benefits to mind and body are great and to the community. But the riders who brake the laws because they feel entitled are the ones who make the all riders look bad.Bike lanes are here to stay to you riders please respect the rules of the road

    Protected bike lanes are a win win for motorists in cars . If there is a bike lane the cyclists will use it and motorists will not have as many bicycles on the street .

    A bikelane should be wide enough for two people cycling next to eachother, father and daughter, mother and son, boy and girl, man and wife, man and husband, etc.
    On a two directional bikelane people do not have to be afraid of touching one another or have the obligation to avoid contact.
    What I see in this video are goosetrails all behind eachother no able to talk, only shout.
    You truly have a very long way to go.

    if they would build a bike lane (such as using the space where the grassmeets the trees about 6 or 7 feet) they can use this buffer for a 4 foot wide limestone path for bikers and walkers, so we dont have to walk in the street this area is a suburb, with a park across the street sorta, and cul de sacs, and park up the street for playing ball, etc, there are no sidewalks at all for walking or even biking. this street I live on used to be you see a car maybe every 3 to 4 minutes, nowit is acar like every 2 or 3 seconds, sometimes, I dont feel safe riding my bike there I sometimes will hurry and ride up the street to the park and go into the park but your not allowed onthe trails with a bike, so Iam stuck on pavement. but at least the number of cars are much reduced. but I must clairfy, I would only ride my bike for recreation exercise or a short jaunt to the food market or drug store no more, not for groceries to go to work, meetings and what not. just for exercise and getting fresh ari.

    Bike lanes were a terrible idea in Memphis. No one uses them and they have created more traffic because two lanes streets have become one laners. I'm not against them but I don't think heavily trafficked streets should loose a lane.

      The American version of "bike lane" is to put paint on the road and call it protected.:P

      They don't work because they're just a line of paint on the road and are useless. Try crossing left across a giant American road without getting cut off and hit by cars moving twice as fast. Try riding in a residential area with cars and trucks and trailers parked in your bike lane. Try moving slower than 40mph on a congested American road where 100,000 people in a small town are on the road at once and the city is 500% large than it should be because of flat buildings and parking lots. If you just got rid of all four lane roads and parking lots you'd be able to walk somewhere in as little time as it takes to drive there

    If you elavate the bike Laine up like the side Work you get a good result...like in Denmark

      It's the same in Norway, 53% of all trips are less than 2.8 Km and you can check it out at the Dept. for statistics at ssb.no

    Yes there is a push for bike lanes in the larger cuties in North America but not so much in the smaller cities. There is a push back against bike lanes in my city of Halifax . People are really angry at cyclists here . Drivers has spit on me curse and throw ice cream and flick lit cigarette butts at me from passing cars . Drivers are continually leaning on their horns just to annoy cyclists and deliberately parking in bike lanes . The car and oil lobbyists have a tight grip on things and are dug in with what seems like unlimited resources.

    The problem with the so called "protected" bike lane. Is that whatever is used to "protect" the bike lane. Ends up screening cyclists from motorists and vice-a-versa. And the end result is more conflicts were cyclists and motorists encounter each other.

      There are no conflicts. Conflict implies a war or a battles but there is none. It's the job of motorists to see cyclists. Period.

    Where is the protection? The painted line? If a car miraculously crosses the painted line and hits me I'm still dead. This is a clear demonstration of Darwinism at work.

      They say it in the video. Protected bike lanes are those that are separated from the road by barriers, planters, and parked cars. Otherwise it's just a regular old bike lane.

    The rise of protected bike lanes that very few people use...and that create more carbon emissions by snarling traffic and causing automobiles to idle in start and stop traffic...and that cost the taxpayers $150,000 to $250,000 a mile to build...that city officials love because they are great make work projects...which as I understand it are Federally funded...which means they can do the make work project without dipping into their own budget...which is all completely ridiculous given how much debt our country already has on the books at the Federal, State and local levels...
    I don't know where this army of people riding their bikes all over the place is. But it sure hasn't materialized here in Chicago. And yet they keep building this garbage year after year. I particularly love the controlled intersections that go through an extra cycle just for the bike lanes. You end up with a whole block's worth of cars sitting at an intersection while maybe one guy on a bike sails through the intersection on his green light. What a waste of so many people's time.

      Your statement "snarling traffic causing more carbon emissions" is patently false. However, points to you for quoting right wing radio. First off, the fact that carbon emissions exist is due to your choice to drive-anywhere. The traffic you create is your choice. Giving lanes a choice for bikes does nothing to increase traffic as traffic is a total number, not a rate. People deserve choices if only person in the country rides a bike just as they deserve a sidewalk if only one person in the world walks. Maybe you should get out on your bike and use the lanes?

      it's unfortunate for you that I was staring at my email when the notification of your comment came in. Here in Chicago they have installed bike lanes all over the place, and do you know what the result is? People sitting in traffic jams in their cars. And that is so that a very few people can ride their bikes in the bike lanes during the summer, and so that almost literally no one (except a very, very few zealots) can ride in the bike lanes during the winter. If bike lanes are supposed to help the Earth then explain to me the benefit of cars sitting in traffic belching emissions on streets where they once zipped right though before the bike lanes were installed. Is it because people will start to use the bike lanes if we keep the bike lanes long enough? Nonsense. They've been building those things for years in Chicago and they barely get used in the Summer, while getting used almost not at all in the winter. Why? Because the winters here are brutal. "Green" technology is a bunch of garbage that a select group of people who build this stuff are making a lot of money off of. In the case of bike lanes the City of Chicago, as I understand it, it takes $150-250,000 in Federal funds per mile from some "Create a Green World" program to build the bike lanes. In other words the City is able to create make work projects for their constituents without having to dip into their own City budget, regardless of whether or not it is good for the people. What does that mean? A few "Green" consulting firms make a lot of money, the City workers make a lot of money, and the rest of the city gets bike lanes that make their life far less convenient all for the sake of twenty bikers an hour using the bike lanes on a given block in the summer and less than one per hour in the winter. Your position is indefensible.
      Another example is Uber. Uber is supposed to be a ride-sharing service that connects people who need a ride with those who have one. The reality is that it is no different from the taxi business. The reason they are allowed to roam our streets on an unlimited basis is because Mayor Emmanuel's brother owns shares in Uber. They should put a cap on Uber drivers here as they did in New York City, because they make it far more difficult to drive. But that won't happen while the Mayor's brother is making money.
      Yet another example is electric cars. They don't use gas. But they do use big batteries that are going to have to be disposed of somewhere when they wear out. And the fossil fuels used to generate all the power needed to run the power plants that fuel those electric cars is not negligible.
      And if you want to put it on a personal fitness level, I play basketball, box, and lift weights to stay in shape. It is worth mentioning that I don't use any of those fitness methods to try and be a snot to the rest of humanity. Would you care to box a few rounds with me to see who is in better shape?

    My city has bike lanes on some of its downtown streets... hardly anybody uses them, they kill off traffic lanes and turn lanes for cars, they complicate parking, and bicyclists still act like they own the road, all of it. Waste of space and money. If cyclists want motorists to respect them, maybe they shouldn't bike the wrong way down one-way streets when they feel like it, or blow through red lights, stop signs, and Don't Walk signs because they feel special-snowflake entitled to avoid losing momentum.

      +Zalis116 Are they separated? Not just paint on the road? Do they have a puffer zone or are cyclist still forced into the dooring zone of parked cars? Studies shows that cyclist braking the rules when the infrastructure is insufficient. If cars are still parking in cycle lanes or block them otherwise, cyclist will not feel taken seriously.

      I see motorists breaking road rules too . Motorists speed run red lights and park illegally and burn rubber and do donuts. They drive while texting on phones . They drive with bald tires and bad mufflers and leaky gas tanks . Motorists also lock their dogs in their cars with windows closed on hot days . I have never seen a cyclist do this to their dogs when cycling . I seen my share of cyclists who also break the rules but it is not right to single them out as if they were outlaws or something.
