Seeing that caddy makes me wish I could have been able to fix up my grandfather's 1973 Chrysler New Yorker Brogham. It was long and black, about 21.5 feet and 5,300 lbs! The seats were comfier than a expensive couch, the driver's seat was power adjusted, and the A/C acted like a house thermostat, (AutoTemp II) you even dialed the temp in! It would switch between heat and A/C as necessary to maintain the temp.
just like that caddy, and a massive big block! as a teenager, my father sold me that Chrysler , and I was going to fix it up.
Unfortunately, the more we looked at it, the more it looked to be too much project. The core support was rusted through, the interior (other than the seats) was in bad shape, the hood was badly rusted out, the roof had holes (vinyl roof car!) , The floorpans need done, the front suspension was needed to be gone through, and worst of all, the driver side framerail was shot, and the passenger wasn't much better. it had rust holes in many spots. It had been sitting outside since 84, ( It was 2007 when I got it) and it was in a sorry state.
I ended up trading it and some cash, for a 1981 Imperial coupe. Maybe I'll get another 73 Chrysler New Yorker one day.

What about the 1979 to 85 Eldorado Biarritz that design i have heard its becoming a classic? Will it be a concours vehicle in the future?
I think it will it has the style of the 67 threw 70 then Cadillac changed the design u1 threw to 74 then changed ths design 75 threw to 78 which was also changed and the 1979 the Eldorado came back to the 1/4 window deaign of the 67 to 70. The 1979 threw 85 Biarrtz coupe and the 84 and 85 Cadillac converted ASC convertible

20 years from now people are going to want those clamshell tailgate station wagons in car shows. They were produced by GM from 1971 to 1976. The Oldsmobile example was called the Custom Cruiser. Pontiac had Grand Safari. Great names! Buick and Chevrolet had similar models.
I'd kill to find the clam shell Pontiac Grand Safari my folks had back from 1973 NOW!!! with a vinyl top AND the roof rack...LOVE those wagons.

C'MON boys - this is NOT a BARGE o'matic - just because ya'll have gotten used to driving a compact car labeled as "large" - This beautiful Eldorado is Full Sized the way cars should still be made. With the advances in tinkering with engines to get better gas mileage, why not bring back STYLE instead of building a body that barely covers an engine and throws some tiny uncomfortable seats behind it without style or comfort resembling SUPPOSITORIES shoved up our collective kiesters more than a car we would WANT to drive, much less pay for....
towrnghrybear a huge part of the problem is the government meddling. Thanks to nosy Nader and "unsafe at any speed" the federal government keeps making automotive engineers stuff new cars with airbags and other heavy safety bs. Why do you think all of the a-pillars are so massive now, because they have to house airbags. That's why all steering wheels are ugly and chunky now. All of this crap hinders what the engineers can do. Personally I hate basically all modern styling cues, as it's really tough to tell one angular mess from Honda from an angular mess from Chevy.
towrnghrybear Don't give up HOPE! Good analysis and comments MAN. There are retrofit upgrades, that will get better gas mileage - with radial tires. Think YEAR ONE is one of several specialty catalogs that offer improvements. I know Chrysler has kits for ignition and conversion to single port, fuel injection - over standard carburetor.
towrnghrybear unfortunately, if you want a modern car with dimensions like the old ones, and you don't want a Maybach, you would have to go to China. They have a couple cars from American manufacturer s that are sold only in China. One is the new Lincoln Continental, and the other one is a Buick (Riviera, I think) . Apparently, GM , Ford, and Chrysler don't think massive 20 footers would sell here.

VW should make like a race TDI. Twin turbo diesel. Like their LMP cars but for the people. Call it somekind of number. And diesel will come back for them. They have nothing to lose at this point! Lol!
8:57: "I think the the transmission is juxtaposed, sideways or off to the back,...I think.". Huh? What bumbling Dufuss (Todd Lassa))! (This guy is supposed to be an expert, otherwise he should have just kept his yap shut). The Turbo-Hydramatic 425 was was longitudinal also the torque converter was behind it as typical of cars of that era, the unique part of the Eldo-Toro-Riv trans drive was that the trans the differential were integrated by having an internal wet chain drive connecting the torque converter to the transmission gears located under the motor slightly to the left (driver's side) that lead to the integrated differential under the motor in the area were the oil pan sump would normally be located. Hence the the GM name of "Unified Powerplant Package".
The Subaru SVX was not a v6 but their boxer 6 and it made its way into at least one worst car book
I only like 77-79 Coup de ville's.. then GM dropped poo on the world with FWD and aluminum blocks.. then Cadillac made an OUTSTANDING gesture to the world with the 1990 RWD Fleetwood with the 5.7 motor, That is one of the best and most under appreciated Cadillac designs ever, that body lasted from 1990-1992, then Cadi changed the lines all together with there 93 fleetwood. that car looks like a big ugly goose compared to the 90 RWD FLEETWOOD..
I bought a 1992 Cadillac Brougham as my first car last year. (actually they took out the fleetwood name from the rwd cars 90-92 because there was a fwd fleetwood so its only called brougham). I searched for 3 years in switzerland until I found one. I will never sell it. Its very fun to drive and there is NO new car that offers the same feeling. I will have to find another 5 so I can drive those cars until I die. My car has only 30k miles, all options except for CD (Astro-roof, d‘elegance, 5.7l engine, gold package etc). Couldn‘t be happier. The car gets a lot of attention. People take pictures, other people driving oldtimers wave when driving by. A lot of fun and attention for the money of a used VW Golf.
That's an outstanding story. I would love to see pic's or a video even better. Hear in the state's 90-92 Cadi's are beauty's that people are not going to see until it's to late. They became rare and a hot commodity in the early 2,000's because people figured out how to used the euro front, rear and side moldings on the older 2 door Cadillac's of the 80's. when that happened ? the result was 90-92 Brougham's were popping up stolen all over the US. then the 5.7 motor, trans and digital dash became almost a mandatory addition to the urban owner of all mid 80's lowrider styled Cadi's.
Subaru BRZ. Rarer than its Toyota/Scion counterpart and great looks.

They are 1970's classics. In the same way back in the 1970's we looked at 1930's Packards, Duesenbergs, and Cadillacs. I can just imagine someone today looks at these cars and can't wrap there heads around the idea that someone my age actually passed there driver's exam in a 19 foot barge. No laughing matter having to pass the parallel parking portion of the driving test looking through a rearview mirror and seeing the tailgate of my dad's 1974 LTD Country Squire so far away it could give you vertigo! Yet, these boats were lined up and down the street of my neighborhood in the narrow inner city side streets or on the Interstate on cross country trips.

The eldo wasn't king of the hill the mark 111 won on the quality of materials used ! The caddy was cheesy I just googled it the continental did win ! My family had a few of these and they had a continental the continental was hands down a better car in ride and build quality !

Scary to drive! Even on a dry Intersate feels like it would float itself off into the weeds. Imagine having to pass your driver's exam in one.
These guys just amaze me as to their level of detachment from reality. I suppose it's obvious they are from Detroit, sitting around agreeing with each others load of BS.
First, the dribble about styling makes one want to vomit. The fact is that might be a car admired in the world of Harley Earl school of design.
The fact that it is a 1970's for people stuck with a 1930's world view. It was sign GM was well on it's long slide down from the top in terms of being a world leader much less a world beater.
I like this car's style as visual art, but as a real world vehicle it's just plain nastalgia for a world that stopped existing when WWII started. Not a good thing if you want to be claiming to be the "Standard for the World".
8.2 Litre- It was not a "recognition" of the impending doom from foreign competition, this is GM still at the height of arrogance - you know; "What's good for GM....". Actually it was the failed 1970's movement to make America Metric. We started to see Kph as well Mph speedometers (we were taught metricv conversion tables in elementary school and told to expect be totally metric by the end of the 1980's) in a country that to this day still measures with the same system as when it was ruled by a King it dumped 242 years ago! So how do they explain the 1966 Ford 7 Litre introduced 4 years earlier? Are they going to claim it was recognition that Ford might be fearing a merger with Ferrari ?
Irritating from a consumer point of typical cars from that era;
Fake Convertible - Vinyl Roofs, in actuality just there to hide the bad metal joins in the roof, sold by dealership pimps as must-haves, like tie pins.
Fake Rear Fender Scoops - They whine about how emissions laws stangled the power, maybe it was the fact that they budgeted more towards ornamentation than engineering.
White walls - only for the leasure-suite crowd's obsession for matching white shoes and belts.
