You really didn't get it at all. The Haka is like a challenge and usually teams just accept the haka and walk off, but Wales instead of just facing up and then walking off, they stood their ground and refused to back down first.
Another thing, the Haka is like a sacred thing for the maoris and they don't like it when people make fun of it.

I sugest this one. The Haka done in diferent sports.
"The New Zealand Haka Across Many Different Sports"
      ua-cam.com/video/0x21u-GzI8c/v-deo.html
The Haka is warrior dance from the Maori, the native people of New Zealand it is used to itimidate the oponent or to welcome guest to a celebration. There are some related warrior dances from the native people from that area of the world, like the samoans, polynesian island and Fiji. But the New Zealand Haka is the most famous of all. In this video, the New Zealand National Team in a variant of sports do the traditional Haka. Hope you enjoy.

Actually several welsh players find the haka disrespectful and unsportsmanlike (due to it being a war dance and it being sport) there have been incidents of welsh players turning their backs to the all blacks in the past when they are doing it.

The Haka is huge in New Zealand since it’s part of are culture. So most teams then walk away afterwards (teams aren’t allowed to come forward during it. France has done once) so it is also big that Wales just stood there. ☺️💙 anyways much love from New Zealand.

You spoke on top of the commentator in the end, when he explained what happened - he answered at the same time you asked it :) The intense stare in the end was a 'silent nod' - challenge expected.
The Haka performance is from the Maori culture, the words the leaders speaks, and other back up, is a story of some hero making a quest. I think first he makes a promise to make that quest.
There's a bit of imbalance in the Haka: the NZers say they don't mean to disrespect the opponent with it, quite the opposite. Good intention - but how do you think people react, when you respect them with a dance originating from threatening the enemy? Though they wouldn't mean it now. But the moves come from war parties meeting, and the resulting show off. The tongue is nothing more than the classic 'We'll eat you up', then banging arms and legs, ad chest, power intimadating.
Now it's a traditional performance, but what if the tradition simulates a throat cut? If you now claim I don't understand, it's a tradition - then I'll answer you didn't get me - I just said it's a tradition, read carefully again. Some practice being ancient tradition doesn't explain everything, or suffice for an satisfactory answer and permit to go on and do it.. Some countries they mutilated ladies' feet for beauty, another place circumcises girls - which isn't the same as it is for boys - so just because it's tradition, just doesn't cut it. Or rather cuts too much. Traditions are exactly the thing where we should be self-criitcal. Culture doesn't give us excuses to do what we want. Asking space to respct and follow your tradition legitimizes the others to do the same.
Come on guys, nobody's blind here. Let's be honest and face it: Haka comes from a war dance, the moves are evident and everybody in Rugby knows that. Which means it includes a challenge, naturally. Would be hypocratic to claim there's no challenge there, though the focus is elsewhere. If you're psyching yourself up for the game, towards the opponent, they are allowed to a performance of their choice towards you - in the spirit of fair sportsmanship. Would be different if you did the Haka towards the stances.
If this sounded like just a long criticism, please remember I'm watching this because I like the Haka. Just let others do their performance as well. So, if the All Blacks and other NZers want to perform it, it's ok of course, freedom to express one's culture, if it doesn't hurt nobody. And I don't mean 'hurt the feelings' :) But then they should not complain if there's a counter challenge coming. If you give heat, you better take the heat as well. Otherwise it's imbalanced. Fair is fair.

It's because everyone is supposed to have deference to the Haka because the Kiwis are an ancient people. But the Welsh (Cymraeg) are also an ancient people and are native to that land so they were standing their ground on their land!

  • @matthewprice2626

Usually the haka is done as a challenge, both teams walk away and the game starts. This time Wales stood their ground and stared them down as a response to the challenge. It was a big thing because its rarely done and New Zealand are by far the best rugby nation on earth. It was also in the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff which has one of the best atmospheres of any stadium in the world hence the commentator saying 'the crowd are part of this'.

the haka is an old battlecry the opposition is meant to accept the challenge and start the match. wales are the first team as far as i know to say in silence. our house, our home - YOU WALK! in a hundred years wales have NEVER beaten them, few have.. for some perspective. Jonah Lomu, playing in that match was over 120kilos and could run 100m in a time comparable with olympic athletes. no pads just power.. the legacy of the mouri peoples. BIG and FAST. RESPECT TO WALES! The all blacks have a phenomenal record and you really shouldn't anger them.. haha!! I can see your confusion though. seriously noone does this to them, but its maybe time the should. national anthems - but the haka is class but HAS TO give them a certain unfair fear factor.

The haka should NOT be allowed in sport.. Isn't it funny how new zealand cant win a single game in every other sport. But seem to use the haka as a resort. Like, every other country could do a cultural war dance.. But no, only New Zealand.. Get it out of the game!

There is a lot of significance and history behind it. Yes it maybe a war dance in some cases but it's also a dance to honour our ancestors, we have done this for a very long time. Some of the Pacific islands also do their own versions as well. There is more meaning to this than what you may think and I couldn't explain it all to you because it would take awhile.
