HAPPY BEAR CYDER LOVES his TOY DUCKY

  • This was from a banner day during last summer's Bear Mating Season. A whole slew of bears passed through. A few of them were traveling solo, in pursuit of particular, elusive partners. But some of them were part of a roving band of merry bears. Cyder was among the latter ursine travelers. He was really enjoying the company.
    Some of you may recognize "Cyder" from his signature "Does a Bear Fall in the Forest?" move, which I posted last year. (I'm including a link at the end of this video just in case you missed that.)
    Cyder and my favorite male bear of 2023, Scruffy, had themselves a time on and around this time. Those two were traveling together with several sows, and courting the same girls. They were all generally throwing a great big bear party in the woods. In between communal marking sessions on the bulletin-board tree and showing off for the available girls, Cyder and Scruffy took turns enjoying the Rub-a-Dub-Tub.
    As some of you may recall, poor Cyder has an eye injury which affected his balance and depth perception, but that didn't keep him from enjoying himself, and playing with the rubber ducky. This footage has been making me smile and laugh out loud for months now, so I figured it was time I share this good medicine with the rest of you, too.
    btw, Violet, (Belle's yearling) really took to the tub and the Ducky last year, too. She loved the Duckies so much that she ended up running off with at least two of them. I need to order some more Rubber Duckies, but will wait to do that until sometime next spring, when more bears are out and about. (I still just love the idea that there is some bear den around here that is chock full of toys and rubber duckies.)

    Banner day indeed! Cyder seems to enjoy that tub as much as I love a good creek! He sure plays gently with Ducky! I hope he shows up again in spring/summer looking for his pool mate at the Rub-a-Dub-Tub❣️❣️

      I do, too!
      Here, though, in the mountains of western North Carolina (closer to the U.S. east coast) there are only black bears - the smaller cousins of brown bears and grizzlies. I’m kind glad of that, really. I wouldn’t feel quite as safe with grizzlies in the ‘hood! 🐻 🤎

    What a fantastic video! I could watch Cyder play with the rubber ducky in the tub for hours. I love your description of a "roving band of merry bears," that would make for a wonderful children's book. Or an adult one, for that matter.

    • @FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS
      @FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS  8 місяців тому +2

      🤣- On this particular day, there would definitely be at least one “adult” book in there somewhere. 😁
      Over the years, I’ve become positively fascinated by bears during mating season. I have been seeing more communal/roving bands of merry bears during those summers of love than any other time of year. (Not counting Mama Bears with cubs or yearlings - that’s a given.)
      I wonder sometimes how much of the cooperative behavior I’ve been seeing (in the last couple years) is primarily due to my recent favorite male bear, Scruffy. Scruffy has a decidedly jovial attitude, is quite friendly and “plays well with others.”
      I was devastated to see (days after the fact, via my trail cameras) a bear come through here last autumn with what looked like a broken hip or femur. This happened after there had been a long-ish absence from Scruffy. I didn’t recognize the bear at first because it had lost too much weight. I realized later on that that bear might be my beloved Scruffy. I’m not 100% certain of that, but I’m fairly certain and it just breaks my heart every time I think about it.
      Thing is, some bears heal remarkably well over winter in their dens. There is some promising science in the ability of broken bear bones to heal over winter. It’s a thing. I’ve seen plenty of big adult bears swing through her with signature walks - with profound limps, and odd gaits that hint at previous traumatic injury. It’s probably too much to hope this time, but still, I do hope that dear Scruffy will have put on enough weight last autumn, has a safe and warm den and is healing well enough this winter to continue being his wonderful self later on this year.
      Scruffy often acted like a tour guide to other bears on the mountain. I hate to think he won’t play that wonderful role anymore. I’m hoping he can heal. I’m also hoping for the best, which isn’t necessarily the happiest scenario. If relief from pain in this world is the best hope for him, then I hope Scruffy can find his happy horizon where he can lope free again with other bear-buddies, without pain.
      It’s no walk in the park being a wild animal. 😔

    • @endlessmtnwildlife
      @endlessmtnwildlife 8 місяців тому +2

      @@FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS I agree that the life of a wild animal is precarious at best, and it's hard to see something like that for those of us who are enamored with wildlife. There was a doe with a broken leg in my resident deer herd and her hoof was just dangling from her leg. The poor thing kept trying to put weight on it and it was too painful for me to even watch. But sure enough, I saw that doe for 3 years, fawn in tow every year. Here's hoping that Scruffy heals well enough to continue guiding the merry band of bears through your sanctuary.
      I got a good laugh at your comment about material for an "adult" book during the bear's summer of love. 😄

    How are you doing, Amy? Do you have any visitors now in winter when the bears are hibernating?
    That teddybear is cute! So that was last summer? The girl bears will all be giving birth around now, those that don't have little teddies that is. They'll introduce their tiny teddies to us in spring. I can't wait to see the new teddybears!

    • @FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS
      @FAIRVIEWCRITTERCAMS  8 місяців тому +1

      💜 I’m really looking forward to that, too!!
      I’ve actually been seeing more bear activity this winter than in previous winters. Mostly from a very roly-poly Mama Bear with her very roly-poly bear cubs. That trio swung through here on Christmas Eve, and again only recently. I got some great footage of them. The cubs look so big and mature, the Mama Bear will probably dispatch with them very early on, come spring, so she can hook up with a boy-bear this summer to make more cubs. 😁
      I got to watch several sows courting during last summer’s mating season, so there’s a good chance I’ll get to see at least one of them visiting here with little cubs in tow next spring and summer. I’m really looking forward to that, too!
      I’ve been keeping an eye out for Mama Darryl (Bertha.) I only saw her twice on my cameras last year, once, way down on my old northern logging road, with her large yearlings. And, after that, just a second time up by the Bear Bulletin Board Tree, during mating season, looking for a mate. I so wish she’d come back up here to play again with her little cubs. Maybe she’ll deign to visit us a few times this spring and summer? Here’s hoping!
      I’m doing OK, I suppose. I wish I had the time and energy to post more, but I’ll just do what I can. I appreciate your checking in! It’s been a really tough time, but I’m lucky to have so many amazing memories to sustain me.
      I hope you are doing OK, too!

    Happy New Year, Amy. I'm so glad to see you posting a video again. I completely understand why you haven't been as regular posting videos as in the past. Thank you for this latest of your playful property peregrinators. He really did enjoy the tub. I'm sure your video was edited and compiled from a lot of videos from different camera and camera angles. Could you tell us approximately how long he was there at the tub for this visit? our bears seem to get in our tub and enjoy it but rarely are in for longer than 1 or 2 minutes.
    Warm blessings to you from Rick in B.C.

      So glad you caught the video!
      Sometimes I fail to keep all of the videos that document that entire span of time a bear is in a particular place -- if there isn't any noteworthy action, I just trash it. Having said that, I'm pretty sure Cyder was playing in the tub for about 10 minutes.
      Usually it's closer to 5, but sometimes it's much longer than 10. Love it when that happens!
