What you said about scammers only being exposed if they rip off rich people is painfully true. I listened to an extensive investigative podcast hosted by the journalist who first broke the Elizabeth Holmes story, and it broke my heart to hear about the ordinary victims of Theranos: the scientist who ended his life because of Holmes’ intimidation, the countless people who received false/deceptive test results that endangered their lives, and the young whistleblowers who lost everything exposing Theranos. None of these people got justice: only the rich investors did.

I agree that these types of lists as well as the near-worship of young tech entrepreneurs has created this notion for younger people that if someone doesn’t do something earth-shattering before the end of their 20’s they are a failure which thus encourages people to go to any lengths for success including stealing, lying, and cheating.
Its such a hard mentality to break out of. Sometimes I panic because I haven't done a lot at 23. But then I have to remind myself most of the famous people in my industry didn't do the things they were most know for until their late 40s at least!
I have tried SO hard to console my friends that are turning 25 and feel like they’ve done nothing. I will never understand why people think 30 is old. You SUCK in your 20’s. You’re still learning to be a human!

Yes. I spent a lot of energy wondering how I was such a failure yet was always working. 🥲 then stories finally started coming out to dispel those stupid lies- get rich quick scams, self-made man, etc.
Bill Gates “invented” the PC not because he’s smart and awesome but because all the moms in his neighborhood got together and bought them a computer. And then the kids got together and rented time to use a company’s business after hours. (They had to pay for that). Then his friend and colleague died so it was just left to him to take all the money and credit and just -let us all believe he earned his place in society.
He pays no taxes yet was running health schemes in Africa? What a freak! If they paid taxes, we would all get to have a say in how that money benefits the citizens and the world. Instead, they establish a “charity” to evade taxes, do god knows what anywhere on earth or space, and expect us to look up to them!
Forbes should replace it with 70 over 70 to celebrate people who retired and took up fun hobbies, like a grandma called Nora who was an office worker her whole life and has now gotten really good at oil painting.

This happened with our local papers 30 under 30! Two people on the list in recent years are now facing criminal charges.
I constantly think about how the main men behind Enron not only got out with million-dollar checks, but continue to make money in speaking gigs at business schools. No accountability, no justice, no remorse. Just continuing the cycle of predatory practices.
That is the product of a deeply misogynistic and racist society in Texas. Two close childhood friends of mine worked in the IT sector there for years and they both left before that one blizzard killed thousands. Fortunately they had the resources to leave but many do not. It's like Pakistan inside the USA.

30 under 30 is PRECISELY about flexing young wealthy people and that’s it! Forbes might attribute the persons success to a mediocre creation that is virtually useless, but really what’s important is the huge net worth they’ve amassed via pre-established wealth and/or dedicated con-artistry.

The Theranos situation makes me so sad for people who are researching lab on a chip technology. She made it so people now look at this very real technology and assume it is a lie. I worked in a lab where we made boards for this technology and it was really amazing what they could do with just a drop. It really could be a game changer for decreasing the time and cost for medical testing, especially in clinics where a patient is seen only once and doesn't have a permanent address. But right now the trust for this technology is gone.
Yes, I agree, Holmes shattered the reputation of a whole branch of science because of her greed. No amount of prison time can fully punish her for that.
I hope also that more people will get over the fear of people who don't have "permanent addresses" -- I think this has got to be at least 10% of the US population, probably a lot more in certain counties.

Most of Theranos’s downfall was Holmes’ insistence on aesthetics (such as keeping the instrument as small as a kitchen appliance, and keeping the cartridges the size of the palm of your hand, or an iphone) and a deeply rushed timeline. The image of the product was more important than the product itself. The technology is absolutely within reach to run a variety of blood tests with minute amounts of blood.

I’m a biochemist, I very well know what can and cannot be done with drops of blood, and I can tell you that not even the product that Theranos was hawking was a single cartridge “diagnose all” thing. There were separate cartridges for separate sets of tests. There are certainly some tests where finger prick samples will never work (like serum potassium levels, due to cell lysis during finger prick blood extraction), but to say that it’s “impossible” to do much of what theranos aimed to do is just inaccurate.

I think it’s also important to remember that you can nominate yourself for Forbes 30 under 30, so that attracts a certain group of people who want to be recognised for their wealth rather than any other measure of success

not to be an armchair "visionary tech ceo," but if i led a tech startup, i would simply choose not to commit any felonies. but i guess narrow-minded thinking like that explains why i failed to orchestrate a massive fraud before i turned 30. hell, having empathy and being unwilling to ruin even one measly life probably doomed me from the start.
Its never too late to defraud people. Enron "visionaries" did it by the time they were in their 50s. But if you are already 50, you can look forward to scamming your way into billionairehood before you turn 80..... which would be a nice feat!

Wow.. I didn’t realize Robert had 100k, I thought he had atleast a million. Robert isn’t too dramatic and if more straight to the point compared to other commentary channels so it might be difficult for others to stick on to his Channel for too long because peoples (including mine) attention spans are pretty low.
I found Robert in 2021 and have been around since! I’ve been saying this, he’s one of my favorite creators!!!
I just found him today and subscribed. Loving what he has to say and I think his channel will continue to grow.
The smartest person I know had a PhD in physics and could be super rich but doesn't really care about money and is happier being a professor. He's also not a sociopath so that might be why he never went the greedy route

Yes. I have never met a single poor person who wasn't brilliant and resourceful. On the other hand, I have only met a handful of individuals in a high-paying fields that I didn't consider brain brokenly stupid. Back when I still cared enough to apply for Software Engineering roles, I had to use LinkedIn daily. A JPMC SWE said that Vitamin C could cure COVID. An Amazon SWE thought it was acceptable to bully others. I don't feel as bad for not having made it anymore. Our current society doesn't deserve the gifts that such talent can bring.
This lists always strike me as a “pay us to write a puff piece about you”…which invites grifters who thrive on attention, for Forbes this is financial benefit.
My husband is a genuinely self made, ethical, hardworking, and successful entrepreneur. He’s 37 now, and he talks about how he felt that “30 under 30” pressure for success. Because his progress didn’t look like the people you see on the 30 under 30 lists, he always felt like he was “behind” when he was younger. Especially in his early 30’s. However, it just seemed impossible to do what the people on these lists were claiming to do in regard to their personal success, innovation, and the altruistic/benevolent the claims they were making. Thankfully he realizes now that the people on these lists are often absolutely disgusting people at best, and complete frauds at worst. It is literally impossible to do what they were claiming to do. When you’re entrepreneur who genuinely wants to work hard to build something real, successful, extremely ethical towards your consumers AND employees, and be a positive part of your community…. well, that path looks way different than the overnight rocket ship to success that you see on the 30 under 30 lists. What it really looks like:
- During the early growth and any hard periods: working more days and longer hours than anyone you employ because you know its only fair that the person with the most to gain (company owners have a lot more to gain than an hourly employee) is the person who needs to bear the most responsibility in every way. In working hours and in liability. This means my husband worked 6 days a week, in person and hands on. He answered phones, ran the front desk, packaged kits, etc. He woke up at 5am and got home at 8:30 or 9pm. This went on for years.
- The path is not straight up, and you do not instantly start making a ton of money. It takes years.
- there is no time to “flex” on social media, and when you have grown to a certain point the idea of “flexing” is absolutely cringe worthy. When you have truly worked hard to earn a certain level of success, there’s no need to gain validation through flexing, and the idea of making people who are working hard but struggling financially feel less/insignificant by flaunting things feels gross.
- Making it a priority to take care of your employees before increasing your own salary. Examples: At first my husband could only offer part time hours (although he always paid very well, never minimum wage). Then he offered frequent bonuses and raises. Then he added full time and benefits. And now he’s hoping to add an option for every employee to have a certain percentage (still sorting out the exact number) of ownership in the company after 3 years of working with him. He believes it’s not fair to spend years of your life working for a company, and for the hourly wage to be viewed as fair compensation. If you spent years as a loyal and hardworking employee on any level, you absolutely contributed to that company’s success in a substantial way that doesn’t feel like it’s covered by just your hourly wage.
- spending insane amounts of time pouring over regulations and standards OFTEN, and then operating in a way that goes above and beyond those, rather than a way that cuts corners.
- It will not feel flashy or fancy or luxury or whatever. If you’re looking for that, then you may want to become a high up corporate bro at an already established large company.
No, my husband is not a billionaire. He’ll never be a billionaire. There’s no way to be a billionaire and not be a terrible person. There just isn’t. But having absurd amounts of wealth isn’t even close to a valid metric for success in my eyes, anyway. If you’ve spent your life screwing people over (or just not doing what you know is truly good with your life and resources) but you wound up with a bunch of money: congratulations on your absolute failure in life.
I feel sad that my husband spent any time comparing himself to the 30 under 30 crowd of losers and feeling inadequate because the results of his hard work and good morals weren’t matching up with these 30 under 30 frauds. But I’m glad he realized the truth and can see what an incredible job he’s done, and I’m glad that other people are seeing the reality of the “30 under 30” culture and what it produces.
Its not just that terrible people become billionaires. The more wealth people acquire the worse they become. That doesn't mean all rich people are awful, but there does seem to be a point where extreme wealth severs people from their fellow people. They start to see themselves as extremely deserving and others as not. They start letting morality slip, they commit fraud more, steal more, cheat more, generally feel that the rules should not apply to them because they are so much better than others. It makes sense, how else could a person without mental illness handle hoarding massive amounts of wealth and then see all the poor and suffering in the world? If you truly didn't feel deserving of it you would give it away.
The top people of 30 for 30 are usually 'silver spoon' and 'insider' smart young people. Like the video says, they just aim to make startups and sell at an overvalued price. Thats one of the ways to get those millions. They are not 'come from the bottom' type like your husband. They would never relate to him, past the money
Yes!! All those stories are a bunch of lies! It’s infuriating! The podcast “Behind the Bastards” specifically the deep dive on Bill Gates cleared up a lot of these lies we weee taught. I also felt like a failure my whole young adult life, many work long hours but have nothing to show for it.

There is no way that someone under 30 can make one million USD nowadays unless they got really lucky (less likely) or they stole from someone (more likely). It makes totally sense that this happens.

As a Master Degree holder in Chemical Engineering, I would never believe when someone threw me some lists of bunches random strangers, who happened had 0 real contribution in real life, yet also 0 any kind of scientific proof from their hands.

The average age of a Pritzker Architecture Prize recipient is exactly 65 years - the late great Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi even got it when he was 90 years of age !
You make a really good point about people taking a long time to do their best work or make real breakthroughs. I think of George R.R. Martin, who was probably always a good writer but only got the first volume of his Very Famous Series published in 1996 when he was about 50 y/o. (Don't get me started about Brandon Sanderson and how Forbesy 30 he is.)

Not to be an obnoxious Brando Sando stan but he was like in his mid 30's when The Way of Kings was published and already 30 when The Final Empire was published. Both of those books were successful but he didn't reach his current tier of success until middle age.

This actually has provided a lot of insight of view I wasn’t aware of, it never occurred to me that Forbes didnt even do an in depth analysis of all the members of the list.
One of the best take on these rising scammers. I feel like wherever I looked, everyone's a self made CEO/guru (esp. in LinkedIn post). We are so obsess with being successful that no one cares what you're success is.

I would say Holmes also got done because it was a medical tech. Medical tech is not like facebook or Amazon. Many ore alar bells raised. I also think investors don't do due diligence. They see a young person spruiking the next exciting thing and jump on board to make millions without doing their homework and finding out what they are really investing in.
