She's about ten "Conducting" professional musicians from center "stage" in rehearsal. Vibing and flowing and complementing the circle in the timeless tradition of jazz. Jazz. It's so beautiful. Love your look at the camera when she started getting into the song Cliff. You're totally forgiven for getting stuck, it happens to all of us.
This is not my first time seeing this video. I paid really close attention this time to detail, since my awestruck reaction is past. I strongly agree that it is perfectly alright to be “the boss”, and many of her collaborators (including such pros as Egil and Ivan, who were like older brothers) have said that she kindly led them to the product she had in her mind. I have paid special attention to her rehearsals. She arranges the musicians in a certain order so she can carefully listen and work on change in an organic fashion. Her healthy self respect does not fit with bullying or embarrassing others, those are signs someone insecure. She definitely is not insecure. I love these raw reactions. Great work.
Cliff thanks for a great reaction to this amazing rehearsal by the Barefoot Angel. Here Angelina is rehearsing one of the great songs of all time by legend Screamin Jay Hawkins (RIP) called Portrait of a “MAN”. As always she puts her own stamp on this song and calls it Portrait of a “CHILD”. To appreciate Angelina’s talent, you should listen to SJH version.
Angelina changed the original song "Portrait of a Man" by Screamin Jay Hawkins to "Portrait of a Child". Amazing to watch her at work (just fun for her, like child's play) to get the song to what she wants. As the boss of the studio, she humbly and politely will persuade the musicians to her way of thinking.
So sad that she has not released a final product of this. She is more team member and collaborator rather than boss (thankfully, no diva), though clearly knows how to Angelinize every song she performs.
@@Dare2BWise I totally agree with you except perhaps with what you mean by "definitely in charge." In some situations, I think she has a clear vision of what she wants the finished product to sound like and works with musicians to achieve it. However, in some other situations I believe she uses fellow artists as sounding boards and equal partners in putting together a creation she had not previously conceived. There has been a commenter that has said the only lyric in "Shield" written by Angelina was "Forgive me for all that I am." Whether or not that is true, I don't see that as diminishing her genius. I would hope that she does not feel any sort of facade on her part with regards to fans projection of her as master of all aspects of music. I believe she has worked creatively together and learned from some of the best in the industry. I see her as an empath. As such she would care deeply about how fans perceive her. What I am trying to get at is that I hope any fan perceptions of her persona cause her any self doubts or a feeling of a lack of integrity. As the NGT judge said, she does not have any responsibility to us. Not sure my message is coming across, wish I were a better communicator.
@@corky6481 Angelina is not an empath. An empath is paranormal, and paranormal doesn't exist. I do believe she is sensitive to the feeling of others, but that is a completely different thing. I will stand by my statement that Angelina is in charge. That doesn't mean she makes all of the decisions or tells everyone what to do. But the final decision is hers, and a piece of music she is performing isn't complete until she says it is. I fully expect that she listens to the people around her and takes their advise. But at the end of the day if she disagrees with that advise I expect one of two things happen. 1. The musician plays the piece the way Angelina wants. 2. They find another musician. At the end of the day it is her name on the performance, not the bass players or the pianists.
@@Dare2BWise Perhaps you would agree that her empathic understanding of emotions communicated in song at such an early age is not natural? All I know of her has been based upon watching youtube, not the best way to learn about an individual. So, I respect your position.

Hi Cliff, This are the same guys as in "I put a spell on you", they worked for years with her. The song is from the same composer as the" Spell", Screaming Jay Hawkins, original an opera singer without a job. in the 50s a black opera singer had not so much chances. This guys discovered pretty soon that AJ´s ideas about a song were top notch, you can see them smiling and enjoying this. You and yours stay save and healthy. German greetings.
This little 10 year old directing the seasoned professional musicians in itself is simply beyond astounding. This brilliant young child has a musical IQ that is simply unmeasurable. Thanks for doing this one Cliff....not really seen that much showing just how gifted this child is. We are watching a 10 YEAR old ARTIST at work here, I mean, what can you say? Just have to shake your brain and get past it I guess.
Only Angelina could make me start liking jazz at my age.I'm surprised, but I'm surprised about every song she definitely makes her own.thank you,I really like the way you react my friend👍
Excellent reaction Cliff. This video it makes clear that Angelina isn't only a professional singer (incredible for the age) but understands, evaluates, adapts and modifies the songs based on her beliefs (since she was 6 years old!) And creates something unique, with her splendid brand and is perfectly capable of interacting and directing the adult people of the band. We are lucky that Angelina and her family loving making public the human and artistic path of this wonderful little girl. These are the rehearsals of a song she has adapted when is 10 years old, "Portrait of a man" of Jay Hawkins and done it very well. ❤️❤️ Just imagine how strange it can be for professional musicians to be directed by a child ... 😂
Congrats on 50K!!!! I think you're the hardest working man on You Tube! Now on to 100K. Thanks for your passionate, respectful and skillful reactions Cliff. Great channel
They are the same musicians as those in I Put a Spell On You. She had just turned nine and this session may have been a month before. This has never been performed through I wish she had. This definitely shows you how she works and the why of her nickname “The Boss”. She speaks they listen.
"Painting a portrait in oil" is an extended metaphor used as the heart of the song. He uses "all the colors of blue" on his stand. Blue= sad, the blues, pain, sorrow, burdens, etc. At the end of the song he turns the image around with, "I am the man." So, it is a self-portrait. Meditate on that for deeper meaning. That's what I love about the best songs, especially the old ones: They contain poetry. Angelina herself writes....as does her artist grandmother, the one who played all the old jazz/blues vinyls for her from infancy on. I just listened several times to the SJH original of this song. I have always felt the pain of others, and it is so marvelous to witness this capacity in Angelina, and how she conveys that heart/spirit in the songs.... yes, an old soul.
Congratulations on that first 50 Cliff. The next 100 should be a piece of cake, and that'll put the million within easy reach. What are you going to do AFTER lunch?
Omg just watched another reaction of AJ.. Called above the water.. You have to check it out it's very different from anything I've heard from angelina and I loved it.. Congrats on 50k you thoroughly deserved it xxx 🐐👌🥰😘🇬🇧
How do you start this as a band member. These guuys know this will be in archives for generations. They are in the pocket too. What if you had a handful of pros backing up your talent at ten
Here's a partial translation of what she's saying, from the comments on the original video. I don't know what she says to the piano player at the very beginning; that wasn't translated. I assume she's either saying she's going to start or asking whether they're ready for her to start, or something. But then after the saxophonist adjusts the sound: "It was a little low. That's fine." Then to the pianist: "Shall I start anew?" Then she laughs and there's more back and forth with the band members that wasn't translated. It looks to me like she's asking them to help her find the right place to jump in, because the sax and horn players both do that. Then a little later in the song, to the pianist: "Isn't that supposed to be an open tone?" And finally, at the end, after the first time she sings the final line, she says to the pianist: "And then..." and sings the final line again differently.
This is the same band that performed the (now legendary) - I Put A Spell On You - black and white video. It's possible they were rehearsing different songs for that legendary video?
@Cliff: Not sure if you've seen Angelina in concert singing "Diamonds Are Forever" - ua-cam.com/video/9RGZRg9YH3k/v-deo.html She is 11½ there. This is the all-important "enhanced version" (thanks to Boris Palenovski). Many comments out there suggesting Angelina sing the next Bond film song.
Seems to be a bit of friction between her and the sax player at the outset? His first time showing his back to her for no clear reason caused her to restart the opening, after prompting him if he was ready. She wisely just ignores his second time doing it, assuming he's got some irresolvable problem accepting her into the session.
If I interpret it right he did some adjustments at the mixing console on the wall .. no disrespect for her .. because the sound changed after he finished the adjustments .. it looks like he adjust her mic a bit louder .. she asked him 'sound it better now? ' he nods his head .. and Angelina seems to be happy with it ..
I agree with MT. It seems like Angelina's mic was turned down in the wall monitor and the sax player was the closest to the controls so he turned it up. Then she queued the piano player to start from the top again. Also was cool how she queued him at the end of the song to end it.
What she said to the sax player was: "I was a bit flat (too low) wasn't I?" and the sax player nodds.. then she asks the pianist if she can start again.. So no friction what so ever.
