Delaware Memorial Bridge northbound

The Delaware Memorial Bridge is a twin-span suspension bridge that carries I-295 across the Delaware River near the city of Wilmington. The bridge's are nearly identical: the first opening in 1951 with the second opening in 1968. Both bridges have main spans of 2,150 ft.

Many people are afraid of crossing bridges, there is nothing to be afraid of, just drive like you normally would, and just look straight ahead and drive, you will be across the brdige before you know it, you will have to cross bridges when you are driving on the east coast, this way you will conquer your fear.

I have never been afraid of this bridge. I'm not even afraid to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridges east of Annapolis.
The Williamsburg Bridge on the other hand, I wouldn't even touch.

I always cross this bridge going to the N.J. Turnpike to Newark and New York. Even since I was a kid. I like this bridge.

I remember when this bridge was under construction in 1970. I have memories of its predecessor which we crossed many times to visit relatives in Delaware before we moved. It was marvel then and today!

The Delaware Memorial Bridge was kind of cool, because we are from Texas and never had to tow our RV across these structures like in the Northeast.
It wasn’t hard but it sure was expensive. $24 for a 1-way. Helped convince me to get an EZ-Pass.

I remember somebody asking me a question about Delaware Memorial Bridge. That person asked me "Was Delaware Memorial Bridge around in 1955? I said, "Yes, it was, but not as two bridges, just as one bridge." I told that person the only one of the bridges around back then was the bridge you go over to come into New Jersey. The second bridge (the bridge going into Delaware) came under construction in 1964--nine years after 1955. The reason why that person was wondering about 1955 was because of Back to the Future. That person was thinking about things that are around now that weren't around in 1955. He was beginning to wonder if Delaware Memorial Bridge was one of those things that's here now but wasn't there in 1955, so I had to tell him it was, but only one of the bridges was around. It wasn't a twin span bridge back then. In other words, that person was thinking to himself "While Marty McFly was in 1955, was Delaware Memorial Bridge around back then?"

The Delaware Memorial Bridge opened in 1951, so did the New Jersey Turnpike which connects to the Delaware Memorial Bridge. There used to be a ferry that went from Pennsville to New Castle which was part of U.S.40, then from the ferry slip in New Castle which is today William Penn Park in New Castle to U.S.13 the DuPont Highway U.S.40 & Delaware route 273 shared the same road. I lived in Newark,Delaware 3 years from 6/21/1969 to 6/27/1972. I went into the Navy on 6/27/1972 which took my on 7 overseas cruises aboard 3 different ships, shore duty in Pearl Harbor & San Diego, sea duty in the Philippines.

@@christophers.o622 - the New Jersey town on their side of the bridge is Deepwater - and is home to the first Cracker Barrel I ever visited. What seems odd is that, while the CBs have a reputation for "Southern style food" (and they look like the old-fashioned "country general stores" that are still around)., my favorite lunch menu item is - don't laugh - the Reuben. (Yes; I still go to Cracker Barrels; there is one now MUCH closer than Deepwater I frequent these days.)
