Why is that so bad? Put yourself in that time. Whether it was true or not, the perception of many Americans was that they were being flown over to Vietnam to burn women and kids villages with napalm. It's easy to say now days what we would or should do with many years and a different American culture in the way. It was the era of the protest song and of the peace symbol. How can you say for sure your perceptions wouldn't be different? And what was it all for? All the killing, millions of lives because of some academic political theory about communism. Things don't always look the same when you're there and vets are coming home without legs and every other song on the radio is telling what a moral failing this war is.
