This is incredibly helpful. I'm working on a portrait of a roman legionary right now and I his helmet crest seems to lack something. A sharp edged eraser will work perfectly.
I love your videos and have learned a lot! Thank you! Could you please make a list of materials and brands used in your descriptions? I tried following this video and when I tried to smooth it out with a "soft brush" there went all of my charcoal! lol. what is the tip?? my results looked NOTHING like yours! thank you for any tips!
Another fantastic video, you are very inspirational, cant wait to get my pencils out, thanks once more, were you self-taught because you are very good, but youre right Ihave to keep practicising....
Thank you. I'm self-taught in that I have no formal training, no schooling in art. Other than that, I learn from reading and from watching videos on UA-cam.
RixCanDoit OH MY GOSH! Your work looks like it took years of art school! I am SO impressed that you are self taught. I think maybe you were just born with a special drawing gene!
I use mono zero they work best for hightlights and I use at the dark areas charcoal soft because its the darkest shade even with soft touch I use napkins to blends the dark areas since my brush are covered in makeup lol
Thanks! Today i drew hair for the first time in my life and couldnt get any contrast in it. I know there was too less light on the hair and that makes the hair look a little cloudy/mat
Thank you for this, I've just started drawing realistic because it's quarantine and I want to spend my time to valuable things. This technique is so helpful but what if you don't have sharp edge eraser what alternative can I use?
Hello, I hope you see my comment, I love your tutorial, it's amazing. I just have one question. Can I use my finger instead of that huge brush for blending and get the same/similar results? :D
Well, yes and no. You can certainly blend with your fingers, but you RISK getting oils on the drawing which causes graphite/charcoal to 'stick' and is extremely difficult to fix.
Will the razor damage the paper? Also im doing a graphite portrait but want to use charcoal for the hair. Do you have any tips on how I can prevent the charcoal from smearing over my portraits face (which is drawn from graphite)? Thank you 🙂
You can, but you're not going to get the same effect. Black colored pencil is not as dark or rich, and it does not come off as easily as charcoal when erasing out the highlights.
@@RixCanDoit you're only saying what it is, there's no brand, size, weight, type info.....not sure why the info is so cryptic for. A list of materials used for video with information would be nice.
It's cryptic because it doesn't matter. I don't use any particular 'brand'. I use whatever I have laying on my table. So this instructional video does not show you that you have to use the exact brands I did to achieve this. Just use soft charcoal, erasers, powder, etc. as shown in the video. The results will be the same. I simply have no idea what pencils I picked up at the time and am not stuck to any brand.
Even if you dont have a 7B, 6B, 4B pencils its fine! A 2B pencil could work exactly fine. A 2B pencil is near to a HB pencil but it can still draken certain areas..Tbh i dont actually think you need expensive art supplies! All you need is a normal pencil, eraser, and paper to draw a perfect picture. You mainly need some art skill. Thats all, even if your not good at drawing doesnt mean you cant try it! You might learn something new- and maybe you'll get better in the future!
I really love this tutorial! Not a super long intro or excessive talking, just straight to the point. Really helpfull!
thanks a lot!! I'm just learning how to draw and it's very useful! ❤
Really useful! What kind of ereaser do you use for the hair strokes?
Yes. But they aren't really hair strokes. They are highlights that gives the illusion of hair.
Thanks for the answer! What kind of ereaser is that?
Just a slice of a regular vinyl eraser. You want a sharp edge. Also used are 'pen' erasers, like the Tombow Mono Zero or Tuff Stuff eraser stick.
Thank you so much! :)
RixCanDoit what was that... u used before eraser pen for hair

That was soo fast and easy lol I never thought it was this simple
@fear God Im agnostic
U r the best who explained easily and it went very smoothly
Thank you!

Awesome tutorial. It is helping me a lot in my John Wick sketch
Thank you for your video! 👍🥰
I subscribed just from your pencil sharpener playlist. Only an artist of some sort or other recognizes “the point” of such a list 🙂
Appreciate it!
I like your videos a lot! I've already subscribed. You are AMAZING!
Thanks!
thank you! i learned something! i got the idea in how to make realistic hair

I just use generic stuff. No particular brands in this demo.
How beautiful ... but can you please mention what pencils numbers you used? I am new to drawing and I would like to know
Hard charcoal pencil, soft charcoal pencil, white eraser cut into a wedge and put on end of chopstick, eraser pen (Tuff Stuff), kneaded eraser.
@@RixCanDoit thank you .. you're awesome
And your videos are always very helpful!
Wow it was really awesome and useful to me❤️

You bet!
really amazing work....it look really realistic...awesome...
Thanks!
Hey Rix you are a great artist which charcoal pencil did you used in hair. I use general charcoal pencil in my drawing
Soft charcoal. Brand I cannot recall. Thanks!
I use mono zero they work best for hightlights and I use at the dark areas charcoal soft because its the darkest shade even with soft touch I use napkins to blends the dark areas since my brush are covered in makeup lol
The best tutorial
This is a good video for beginner
Glad you think so!
THANK YOU. MIND BLOWN!!!!
Thanks! Today i drew hair for the first time in my life and couldnt get any contrast in it. I know there was too less light on the hair and that makes the hair look a little cloudy/mat
Aye! Sorry, had to reply to say I luv ur profile sm!! lol
Thank you for this, I've just started drawing realistic because it's quarantine and I want to spend my time to valuable things. This technique is so helpful but what if you don't have sharp edge eraser what alternative can I use?
This is just an ordinary white plastic eraser you can get anywhere. You cut a wedge out of it. You need to have such basic tools.
Try some gluesticks. The endges of the cylinder shape can perform the same. But you need to keep cutting it
Thank you for the reply.😊 Hope your in a good health and continue to educate others.😇
Amazing drawing
Thank you! Cheers!
Really usefull thanks but i'm wondering, what did you use as the highlighter other than earasor? What did you use as the sharp edge?
Just erasers to highlight.
You make it look so easy, but I know if I try to do it it's going to be a train wreck. lol. But I'll try anyway.
It was really useful to me. Bless you.
Glad you found it useful. Thanks for watching and commenting.
My pleasure. I'll keep watching your videos.
What materials did you use? Specifically, for the hair part
Graphite and charcoal, mostly charcoal. Oh, and an eraser to pull out the highlights.
Love your tutorials
Thanks!
Thank u so much, now I learned how to shade to hair. ❤️❤️❤️
I'm blown away by your drawings so realistic! How long have you been drawing for?
2 years

Wow really nice video ,and what s the brand of the pencil you used first
Just a soft charcoal pencil. I don't use any particular brand.
Genius!!👏
Nice tutorial.. do you hv a video with you drawing hair waves?
Most women hair are not always straight
Not yet.
What kind of pencil you used for the hair? Hard, soft...or something?
See the comments.
Nice work man.more power to you and to your channel
Nice video
Hello, I hope you see my comment, I love your tutorial, it's amazing. I just have one question.
Can I use my finger instead of that huge brush for blending and get the same/similar results? :D
TheVampireGirl48 fingers have oil on them.
So...I'm guessing that's a no?
Ok.
Well, yes and no. You can certainly blend with your fingers, but you RISK getting oils on the drawing which causes graphite/charcoal to 'stick' and is extremely difficult to fix.
Ok. Thank you. :)
Fabulous video!
Thanks!
Can you tell me plz what kind of paper you are using? Amazing work btw👌🏻
Sure. It was Sax Drawing Paper, 90#, 9 x 12in, white purchased from Amazon. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing ☺️😊☺️
My pleasure 😊
Rix, I have a real question for you. How do you clean the brush after you brush over the charcoal with it?
I don't.
Oh.
What is that white material u used to give strokes??
An eraser.
Will the razor damage the paper?
Also im doing a graphite portrait but want to use charcoal for the hair. Do you have any tips on how I can prevent the charcoal from smearing over my portraits face (which is drawn from graphite)?
Thank you 🙂
What razor? I don't use a razor. As for charcoal smearing, you just have to be careful.
@@RixCanDoit oh jeez i read the caption too fast at 2:29 lool. I thought it said "sharp edge razor" 😅.
And okay thanks for the tip!
@@RixCanDoit can I achieve the same level that you did in this video with General's Charcoal pencils? What charcoal pencils would you recommend?
Yes. Any decent charcoal pencil(s) will work just fine.
Loved your intro and your drawing even more❤️
Thank you! Cheers!
I'm from Egypt and it was hard for me and you make me happy to do it♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Thank you❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Awesome!
fantastic job my friend, you're right up there with the best of them ; )

You can, but you're not going to get the same effect. Black colored pencil is not as dark or rich, and it does not come off as easily as charcoal when erasing out the highlights.
Hi what kind of paper are you using. Im using sketch pad paper but the charcoal seems to rub off after some time
I don't recall for this demonstration. However, I prefer Bristol Smooth side.
Wow! Youre very impressive! YOU GAINED A NEW SUBSCRIBER! I like ur video by the way! 😊😊😊
Thanks!
RixCanDoit thank you for the ❤
what is the best brush that can be use in charcoal portraits? thanks for your answer. xx

should I apply light pressure when applying charcoal in hair? pls reply asap. thanks
You should always use light pressure in pencil drawing.

Great video. Please keep the good work. But would love to see something on a black man's hair
Thanks. Never drawn hair of a black person before. Guess I'm going to have to work on that soon.
please do. thanks
What did you do in 6:12 part? Couldn't get it😅
Erasing with kneaded eraser.
very very usefull way.Which is the pencil's number?
fidan osmanli it's not pencil, it's charcoal
Meme Supreme thanks
What brand of charcoal you are using?
Nothing particular. I use whatever is available and any soft/med/hard will work just fine.
You're a genius thank you
So helpful👍👍
Aww men....I need charcoal?, how about blending with prisma colors?
No! Charcoal amigo.
Where can I find the beat in the video.
It brings out an artistic vibe
I don't recall where I got it. I think Audio Hero.
What eraser did you use that looks like a clay?
It's just your every day regular white eraser that is cut into a small wedge and put on the end of chopsticks.
This really helps!!
Is it okay to usee graphite in skin tone but charcoal on hairr ?? 🥺
Of course. You're the artist. You decide.
What the equipment do u use to make the light between the hair?
Erasers.
I saw u created a palette can I see it again to get the idea
Created a palette. What's that?
Nice!
Good video,you`re very good.
Thank you. It really is a simple example. Lighter hair takes much more time and effort to do right.
what tool did you used in highlighting those lighted part of the hair??
Just erasers. No special tools.
wow.. nice tutor..👍
Wow awesome
What clay-like tool is that being use to clean mono eraser?
kneaded eraser?
what kind of brush do you use, the brand?
That one is a 3/4 Master's Touch 425 Oval Mop. It doesn't matter the brand though. A nice soft brush is all that is needed.
What are the things that you use ?
Pls tell me so i can buy mine
Charcoal pencil and eraser.

Charcoal or Graphite?
Both. Mostly charcoal for pure black.

Aurhel Lasay a set of graphite pencils shouldwork
got my sub!
Thanks!
What materials did you use?
It's all explained in the video.
RixCanDoit just type it plsss
You could also use a glue stick of glue gun for highlights.
That doesn't sound like something I'd want to do.
Thank you
