- England's preparations for the 1990 World Cup continue with a 1-0 friendly win at Wembley in May 1990 against a Denmark team who had surprisingly failed to qualify for the finals. The only goal sees Gary Lineker's effort adjudged to have crossed the line after hitting the underside of Peter Schmeichel's crossbar.

In England's final Italia 90 qualifying game Poland hit the bar in the last minute. If that had gone in Denmark would have qualified instead of England, so no Gazzamania and football getting rehabilitated after the horrors of the 1980s to become trendy again. Would the Premier League have been able to launch in 1992 with such a big fanfare and attracting all the foreign players? We'll never know but it's an interesting alternative reality.

England, Soviet Union and Denmark, good teams of the 1980s that did not win anything..

One massive difference between England in 1986 and 1990..the English backline..Fenwick was crap..Butcher had Walker and Wright beside him here..
England played Denmark in 3 friendlies in 2 years between 1988 and 1990. Was there some sort of love affair or incriminating information going on between the English and Danish FAs?

I’ll always be a fan of England but I had a real soft spot for the dynamite danish side of 1982-86. Sadly they were in the way down after this but in this game a really good performance. What a contrast in goalkeepers here. The awesome Schmeichel and for England the over rated Chris woods. Notice at 7.30 in the clip how the crowd throws the ball back and Woods completely missed it!
Yeah Denmark were on the way down, apart from winning the Euros 2 years later!
Although to be fair, that 1984-86 team was better than the one that won the Euros in 92.
I love Shilton but if woods was in goal in the semi final shootout I am sure we would have made the final
For a team that didn't qualify for Italia 90, the Danes didn't look bad here. Then again, how much of that is England making them look good?
