The Antigua makes me think of the yoke of a hard boil egg or an avocado sliced in half. It's probably the only color on a Fender I don't care for.
Seriously ive been looking to get a new bike and it's not the same colors but in effect the lighter and darker colors are similarly situated on the model I'm looking at. But instead it's black and bronze. Maybe Fender could do these in such a combination of colors as well as other color combinations.
Brother you show great guitars BUT the display table and wall and cabinets are just terrible and not suitable for displaying such great instruments!
Do you still have that maple neck 1979 Antigua ?
Had mine stolen in 1989 from a show that the band I was in opening up for DAC.
Been looking for it ever since then .
Thank you for what you do.
BLesings to you and your family
Antigua. Also called "day-old guacamole".
I think it would look better with a black pickguard
Funniest comment I’ve seen today
Nailed it!
Get well soon Brian.
🙏
Brian, please get well soon. 🙏
Also, you do a great job of Editing, Thank You
Rotten egg burst. Lovely.
I wish they did more hardtail strats. I'm not really a trem guy and not really a strat guy but the hardtail is intriguing.
It's unbelievable how many unique Gibson and Epiphone guitars come out every week it seems. The market for expensive collectible guitars is so ripe right now, and Fender is doing nothing to capture market share. Whoever is in charge of new products at Fender really needs to think about what they're doing. This guitar is awesome, but if you think about it, Fender is so boring that a painted pickguard is incredible! That's how boring Fender is! I love Fender stratocasters telecasters everything. But try to find one with binding on the neck or on the headstock. Try to find anything but dot inlays. They just don't make them, or they're just so rare that I've never seen one. Fender's really missing this explosion of expensive collectible guitars. It's quite amazing actually. Total mismanagement. If Fender is a publicly traded company with stock on the New York stock exchange or NASDAQ, they probably could get sued by their shareholders for not maximizing shareholder profit. It's unbelievable.
They are discontinued, hard to find, and only in HSS, but the Schecter Banshee-6 Extreme came in both hardtail and Floyd Rose versions. The Floyd one got bad reviews because it’s a cheap import Floyd, but that was the only issue, the rest of the guitar was great, so you’d assume the hard tail version was perfect. (Don’t be put off by the “Extreme” in the name that just seems to refer to the figured maple veneer and fretboard inlays, and there was also a Banshee-7).
I have that same problem with Charvel they always come with a Floyd Rose, which I hate! Both of my Warmoth partscasters have hardtails and I love'em!! My Fender strat's trem is also blocked.
Jackson does them in the same place
I've always either blocked the trem or add more super stiff springs to lock it down. I know not the same but functionally works quite well.
well call me weird , I love this finish
They really should do the finish on the headstock for the limited edition, especially since its the big 70's one. One of my favorite Fender colors for sure!
“Get well soon, Brain.”
-The guitar playing Zombies, probably.
Get well soon, Brian!! :)
Normally I wouldn't say I like bursts, but this one is nice.
I love these bursts!!
I love it. It has a very cool vintage feel to the paint job.
First of all I wish you a quick recovery 🙂🙂
Second, I guess I really am weird because I own two of these : Both '79, one with a trem and one with a hardtail...
Most of my friends hate that finish and always refer to it as "snot-burst" 😄 but I don't care...
I might even get the recent Squier version soon...
Excellent video as usual 👍👍
I love so much the 70s style strat and the antigua finish but the fact that is a hardtail makes kit much more interesting.
I quite liked the Antigua colour back in the day. I did actually buy a Telecaster in that finish with a maple neck/fretboard in early 1980 in Eaing, West London. Sadly it was stolen a few months later and (possibly even sadder) the rumour was that the theif refinished it in black before moving it on so that I wouldn't recognise it. I still had the receipt with serial number.
Lesson learned but 44 years and 30 odd guitars later it still hurts to see a Fender with that finish. My only consolation is that I still have the Strat I bought the year before.
Thinking back, the Strat cost £335 plus £40 for the traditional Fender hardcase in 1979 ( when I was 18). The Tele was £353 with a case a year later. I can't be certain how that equates in terms of value compared to modern offerings.
It looks like about the same value as an American vintage 2 according to the banknof england calculator if that original price included tax. If not an American ultra Lux.
I’ve had mine about a week and I really like it. I was attracted to the finish but found the pickups and hard tail bridge to provide a really good tone through a Twin Reverb. Nice video.
Nice. I just got the 1954 American Vintage II
Wish they did a hardtail of the 1954. Too bad.
Toasted marshmallow vibes
That's a good one!
That Antigua and cosmo finish is insane.
Well done as always! When you demo the guitars, what amp and overdrive do you use and is it the same for all demos? Thanks!
I bought this guitar and I really love the color it’s truly beautiful in my humble opinion
i love antigua finishes so much, the squier vintage modified baritone jazzmaster looked incredible with it
"Phlegmburst" i love it. If fender had painted the headstock they would have my money. I hope they release the same colour dor the pbass for the 70th anniversary
Get well soon Brian. Awesome editing work Trogly!
Get well Brian
Sounds great clean and pretty good distorted for single coils. Mostly I can't believe how much more in tune it is. Hearing Trogly play this then any generic Gibson. This one seems to be so much more in tune. (And I own more Gibsons than Fenders)
I'm digging the new Fender semi-hollow thinlines.
I really don’t like the pick guards on them but otherwise they look cool
my first guitar teacher had one. love the color
Get well soon Brian!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Seeing it in person, I love the Antigua finish
Get well soon Brian. 👍🏻
This Fender sounds really nice. Thanks.
Beautiful!
Great with a Fender review once in a while. But please show the weight in kilograms too for us watching in other countries.
I’m weird I have have that exact model on pre -order, first time I saw one was in the hands of Stuart Adamson, Sefton Park, circa 1984. It was love at first sight, you either love it or you hate the finish, good to see they got the saddles right and the black, white, black pickguard.
The 3 screw neck plate appears to have the allen screw micro tilt to adjust the neck angle if necessary.
Very cool! Love hardtail strats!
I had a black 1972 American standard Stratocaster. I sold it for rent in 1990. It is the one that got away. Love the big headstock and the three bolt neck plate with micro tilt adjustment. BTW mine also had to black pick up covers, which I think look awesome.
Get well soon, Brian!
The Antigua baritone Jaguar/Jazzmaster is really cool
My ɓro has a 79 Antigua. I fell in love with it immediately. I love that finish. Gonna do my Jazz bass like that. 1500 is ridiculous
I picked up a 70th Ann. Pro II. I was nervous about getting my hands on one, so didn't do a ngd deal. But even tho this is made in America, the fret board was also very dry and my luthier treated in during the set up.
Ooh, I had a '78 Antigua strat. I loved it.
10 years ago I got a squire modified 70s Strat similar pick ups, but mine distorted very easily love it so similar
I had the original Antigua Stratocaster. It had a maple neck.
The die cast bridge pieces is a first for Fender Re-Issues. As for the MIM. They price implies that else it would be like $2200-$2500.
Maybe if the pickguard didn't have continual burst around all edges, and opt for a burst that is just broken up by the neck( no burst swoop between neck and neck pickup) it might look even better
Godspeed for your recovery Brian. I boight one of the mim contemporary strats a few years back that is a hard tail. It turned out to be a decent knock around guitar. I also own a Mustang Bullet Competition Orange hard tail. Also turned out to be a good little player. I'm not a big fan of that color combination but the guitar didn't sound bad.
Wow, a hardtail. That is a very nice guitar. That ashtray is awesome.
It's an acquired taste. But with a Strat, or any guitar, it's the sound that matters. The color of the case interior is beyond awesome. When did the antigua finish start? My late brother had a Fender "history book" (of sorts) from 1978 or so, and they only listed two, a solid body Fender 12 and a Coronado semi hollow. Make sure you wrangle up another Fender for Friday...please.
I'm not gonna Lie Austin, I've watched many of your "Super Monkey Ball Trick Shot" videos and they are hilarious.
I think you had uploaded only a handful of guitar videos when I subscribed to your channel!
I also miss your old Gibson Goldtone amplifier, especially the video of you playing your Vintage LP Jr. through it.............sigh, the good-ol days 😉
Chicago music supply had a goldtone twin amp for 850 bucks last week, always wanted one while I was mulling it over it sold😮Now I've screwed up twice!
@@steveparish9210 It happens. With the economy on the verge of taking a dive I believe amplifiers will soon become available for very low prices. I hate to think that way, yet that is the situation we seem to be heading towards.
Brilliant sounding strat. With that clean you can reach any strat sound. A hate those new pickups that don't have 50/60Hz in it's sound.
Ive always loved the Antigua finish , it'd be great to have a Jazzmaster in that finish , Antigua reminds me of a Black Mambas ( snake ) coloring , beautiful ! Thanks Trogly !
Austin, thank you for echoing my own thoughts on the skunk stripe. Why have one on a guitar with an obviously attached fretboard? I can go even further; I have two Donner DST-400s. They both have laurel (therefore obviously not maple) fretboards, and there no way a skunk stripe is needed. One's black, and it doesn't have a skunk stripe. The GREEN one, OTOH, DOES! Once again, why? No clue -- but it looks cool.
Get well, Brian. I like the guitar.
My 89 USA stratocaster does not have the pocket cracks in the paint so it is not something all Fenders have. In 1988 I bought my first Fender strat, it was a made in Japan (not squire, it was labeled Fender) and that cracked over the whole length of the body including the wood in a few months. It was warranty but I lost trust and payed extra to get a new sunburst USA model. I still have it. It can use a fret-job but it still plays great so I leave it for now.
The finish crack on the finish could get worse. My MIM strat had cracks on the neck plate about 8 cm long on upper and lower side of the plate, although it doesn't get longer. But i see a lot worse than mine, where it peels of from the body
I love it. Very cool color scheme.
Definitely one for the Fender amp you have.
That is a nice guitar 1:18
Love that antigua…. I Would change the pickguard, but thats it
What would you swap it to?
I absolutely adore the Antigua finish
Nice! Since you normally do Gibson + Fender Fridays, you should sneak in a review of the Rick Turner Model 1 which Lindsey Buckingham had made to be bridge between the two.
Prayers for Brian and to get well soon! Love your work! 🙏🙏
Coincidentally enough I have a Classic Series 70s Strat - basically a predecessor run to Vintera - and it too has dings on the end of the fretboard! Wonder if it was the same person...
Hey Trogly, I was wondering how many frets, or how many guitars one polishing wheel for your dremel will clean? I ordered the wheels you recommended, thanks for the tips!
All Vintera models are made in mexico and the 3 bolt neck pocket is that way because it has a little set screw so you can set the neck angle easier. Most people prefer the 4 bolt for stability though.
The closer I look, the less it looks like a real one. I'd seen them advertised and thought I just might pull the trigger, but the price just knocked that idea on the head. I paid nearly 2 grand for the mim rocky strat and the thing plays like, well who am I kidding - it doesn't play at all, so there's just no way I'm doing it again. The colors are just wrong - similar, but wrong, and the qc issues are the final nail in the coffin on this one. I 'might' wait and pick up a mint used one for half the price, but honestly I probably won't bother. This should be 899, not 1599, and if it were I would have bought one, but no, just no.
Z is for late
Get well soon Brian
If that was a different color I would get it
Not a Strat fan but one day I hope to get one of these. Absolutely love the finish!
The ire this man holds for the Fender lessons tag was only exceeded by the sheer wrath directed at the silica packet damg
It looks like lemon meringue pie topping.
Wonder whether the owners of Silvertone and Danelectro ever went after Fender. This looks like a model that could have ended up in a Sears (& Roebuck) catalog 60 years ago.
"I want a guitar the same colour as RAW SEWAGE"
Fender; "Hold my beer"
My older brother owned one of those Antigua Strats in the late '70's. I always thought it looked cool.
Opinion on the micro tilt? BTW, mine is really light.....
Thanks for review. I did not realize that these were hardtail. I collect Fender hardtail Strat, going to order one . Thanks again.
Mine is available if you'd like! troglysguitarshow.com/product/vintera-ii-stratocaster-antigua/
I like the Antigua burst effect, but I’d have preferred it was more sepia in color. Regardless, it’s pretty cool looking! An HH version of this would be tempting.
Guess I’m weird....love this!🎸👍
man thats such a beaut! And a hardtail too!
I bought an American Pro Strat last week secondhand for under $1k. Ash body, rosewood fingerboard, deluxe case. Insane that this costs more than 50% more.
I have a friend with a real one. His has a maple board, and is much lighter around the edges. They varied though. Cool guitar.
Great review!
Distorted sound was pretty good
Very cool looking guitar.
"Someone sanded the lacquer off the fretboard"
As a guitar collector and seller, you should know that polyurethane is NOT lacquer.
Not seein’ the “Wild West Cowboy” connection of this finish Trogly… 🤠
I'm not intomstrats, but I like the Antigua finish on it.
The Antigua is my favorite strat color but I can’t justify having two of the same guitar. Guess I’ll need to find a Jazzmaster in the finish!
The bridge cover should come with every ash try bridge Telecaster!
not weird. sick strat and dig the hardtail. a bit of extra weight feels damn good 🤘
How are the tuners on that? I always associate them with cheep junk tuners but quality is varied by producers. KeepSmiling Trogg
Is it me or is this better sounding than the other 70th anniversary one he reviewed?
blew me away...loved them tones.😊
I'm really hoping to see you review the new limited edition American Professional II thinlines - the strat or the tele. ✌️
The color tones remind me of appliances from the sixties to seventies like harvest gold, poppy red, avocado, or coppertone
I love the cbs headstock strats.. with the 3 screw neck and bullet truss rod. And the hardtail is awesome too. I just dont care for the color
I love um! Thanks 🤘
