One of the thing that we EXO-Ls are so proud of is that EXO don't follow trend and stick in certain genre. Though they are well known for RnB and Ballad but they tend to be experimentational which most producers and musically inclined people often say "it doesn't sound like EXO but you know it's EXO". And just like Suho have said before, that they wanted to make music for all ages that when they here it, they can say 'it's EXO/ Oh that's EXO". As we often say, they don't follow trend as they are the TRENDSETTER!!!

EXO's "History" MV is supposed to be an introduction for EXO and it was meant to begin to establish their storyline and concept as a group.
To understand their "History" MV, here is what you need to know: As aliens from Planet Exo, the members are about to be sent to Earth on a mission. "History" is thought to be about how EXO are still on Planet Exo and they are preparing to be sent to Earth. So that is why it has a very futuristic look and feel to it. There isn't a whole lot of story because it is a pre-debut MV so this was meant to just introduce the members and establish their concept.
"History" is EXO's second pre-debut track. It was released in 2012 -- about 2 months after their first pre-debut "What is Love"MV and about 2 months before "Mama," which is EXO's official debut -- so this is more than 11 years ago. "History" is the introduction of the storyline and it explains what lead up to the events in "Mama."
In the EXO-K version of "History" you only saw the EXO-K (Korean) members -- Kai, D.O, Suho, Sehun, Baekhyun and Chanyeol -- singing, and in the middle of the song you see them flash to the EXO-M (Chinese) members -- Lay, Kris, Chen, Luhan, Xiumin and Tao -- however, when you watch the EXO-M version you will see that the EXO-M members are the main characters in the story and they only show the EXO-K members briefly. This establishes how the two groups are separate and yet they are still all part of one group as EXO. Both versions of their MVs may look the same on the surface, but the story is slightly different because it is being told from a different angle or different perspective in each version.
Fun fact: If you compare the English translation of the Korean and Mandarin lyrics, you will see that the songs are slightly different. Because, as the intro to "Mama" points out, the two halves of EXO stand on the same ground and see different things and they stand on different grounds and see the same thing -- they are separate groups and yet they become one, etc. Hence, their songs and story are the same and yet different.
The song is called "History" and in the lyrics they talk about making history. It's about failing at something and trying again to make it right. So, the theory is that in this part of the story EXO made some sort of unknown "big mistake" on their planet, so they have been sent to Earth to try and right their wrongs by trying to prevent the Red Force from causing a "big mistake" or prevent humanity from allowing a "big mistake" to happen on Earth. (Which now might be explained by the meteor that is hurtling toward Earth in EXO's new "Let Me In" MV storyline.) They are trying to prevent "History" from repeating itself. And they want to make "History" here on Earth. It establishes the whole reason why EXO are fighting against the Red Force and why they need to find the Tree of Life and restore peace. They can't let whatever happened on their planet happen again on Earth, etc.
They don't introduce their powers until "Mama," because it is thought that they don't gain the ability to use their powers until they arrive on Earth. Whatever the "big mistake" that happened was, it may have caused them to lose their powers. In future MVs you will see where they receive their powers or their powers are weaker or stronger, etc.
The part of the dance where they put their hands in their pockets and shake their pants, I interpret as the nervousness and uncertainty that they are feeling as they are about to embark on this new journey as they prepare to go to Earth and also as a representation of the nerves and excitement they are feeling as they are about to debut. As you can see, even the choreography is designed to tell the story.
However, just so you know, we didn't fully understand that was what the MV and song was trying to tell us, until several years later, after we had more context to go on after we had several other MV stories and more information. But that is why we say, if you want to try and follow EXO's story you have to pay attention to everything and you have to remember as much detail as you can about everything you have ever seen and heard from EXO. Because although you might think you understand one piece of EXO's story, with every new release from EXO, we get a little more information, and, sometimes it helps to confirm what we thought to be true and sometimes it turns the whole theory on its head and makes us realize what was happening wasn't what we thought after all.
What complicates this even more is the fact that almost nothing in their storyline is in chronological order, so we EXO-Ls have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of everything any of the members are involved in to try and piece it all together and figure out where each part fits within their larger storyline. And I literally mean everything, from their teaser videos, to their MVs, to their song lyrics and live performances, concert VCRs (videos played in between sets at their concerts) and even some of their choreography, as well as their sub-unit and solo work. Everything EXO does is connected.
And now that story has branched out even further to include all of SM Entertainment's groups and artists storylines. Everything that SM produces is all part of one giant story, like a giant graphic novel or mystery movie series, and it's all connected to the SM universe storyline, that all started with EXO in 2012. Each new MV or project is another chapter in the story, and it's up to us fans to figure out where it all fits in the larger storyline.
To see their dancing better, check out the dance practice for "History," the choreography is very unique. They have an EXO-K dance practice and an EXO-M dance practice. And it's one of their few choreographies where the two groups are not combined because they were completely separate groups in this MV.

EXO has that variety that is not the norm in kpop! Every song is different genre-wise. They're not afraid to do experimental productions and songs. They're the trendsetter, vocal kings👑

i think the pre-debut in kpop culture is their marketing strategy to establish fandoms and get the hype before they actually debut officially...sometimes big agencies show their trainees and trainings and these trainees already have fans

As a few other commenters pointed out, pre-debut is just marketing essentially. Show off the group/dance/vocal/rap line/etc, let a bit of hype and following build. Nowadays, you'll see quite a few pre-debut idols doing livestreams, variety shows, etc. Its all really just to establish a bit of an audience before you "properly" debut the group.

What is Love - when Exo have just landed on Earth but discovered they are in separate worlds (parallel universes) and their ship (the blue crystal you'll see in history) wrecked through time and space. Its possible they don't even know who they are but they're trying to learn. They're slowly discovering the stuff from the wreck (the symbols and papers Chanyeol discovers in barn), looking at eclipse to realize their existence/identity (memories coming back), trying to learn how to disguise themselves as humans and encountering each other which is unlocking their power.
History - they've all are finally together in What is Love and are now reminiscing that why the hell they came to this planet. Flashback to History where they're still in Exoplanet and how they were assigned to go to Earth and save the people from Red Force.
Mama - they've learned to disguise themselves among humans now but are constantly confused with how selfish humans are and why do they even need to save humans so they're trying to seek guidance from Mama (You Majesty) or Creator to know whether or not their mission is worth it to risk everything to help these people.
Talking about Jason Derulo, LAY has a song in collaboration with him and NCT "Shut Up and Dance", a tribute to Michael Jackson
Lay still remembers this choreo, too. On Street Dance of China one of the other judges said something about it and he jumped up and started doing it. He might not be in Korea anymore, but he still cherishes his Exo brothers.
Check out the lyrics of Mama too. Then you'll understand that why Mama is the actual debut. What is Love and History are sort of flashback.
4:19 I kinda always thought that Exo's genre of music is Exo.. It's like they have their own genre.. They do all sort of different songs but you can still tell that it is Exo.. That is one of the reasons I like Exo so much.. They bring their own style to every genre they do..
Ah bless i feel your pain. I am your neighbour over here in Ireland, I believe I am a good few years older than you both and I have been stuck in this quagmire of a blackhole that is KPOP/Drama since about 2010. I will honestly admit to have long given up on trying to follow the "storyline" in EXO's videos but I do love watching everyone try to fathom it out everytime a new video is released. I too believe the lads themselves haven't a clue and really aren't that bothered. I was with them for their debut but gave up at the beginning for a few years (so not very familiar with the Chinese members that left of course not including Lay), at the time I was trying to work out the members of Super Junior who had at the time 12/13 members and EXO with 12 it was just too much for me hahahaha. They are my guys though. I have been along for the ride with ye and am so enjoying it and when you get through with the vast amount of videos that still await you, you will have to check out Super Junior and Shinee their "big brothers" from their label as they are so close and are all crackheads, each and every one.
This what made me notice EXO. For the first time ever a kpop group voice doesn’t annoy me
EXOs message is about love and earth’s lack of it and their mission is to bring love back through their music. Lee Soo Man CEO of SM Ent went to the US for his engineering degree. He watched a lot of MTV Michael Jackson and so on, went back to Korea and this is what came out of it/K-pop-C-pop-J-pop and other languages depending what country they’re at. The styles that are incorporated comes from the 80s-90s nostalgic retro old school RnB, jazz, rock, hip hop vibe etc. mixed with modern day beats 2023. The shaking of the baggy pants (M.C. Hammer time) is a clothing and dance style we did in the US. The good thing is that they made that clothing style look Egyptian as well. Asia are known for their sense of clothing styles which fascinates and have a deep appreciation for MJs vocal, clothing styles, dance styles etc. EXO means outer for EXOPLANET, MAMA means Your Majesty/female Queen.
Kpop groups sometimes ( most times now days) get pre debut song they are like teasers to get people exited about the group. In short is a marketing tactic.
Those pre debut songs and mama together with other 3 songs (Machine, angel (sang only by the vocal line D O, Baekhyun and Suho in the Korean version) and Two moons ( Rap line Chanyeol, Sehun and Kai and featuring Key from Shinee) belongs to their debut mini album "Mama"
They are amazing songs too.
Sometimes i just enjoy their terrific talent and not worry about their lore❤. But i admire your willingness to explore it❤

It's EXO from Exoplanet. And yes, that is thought to be inside their spaceship and probably their home planet, although it is uncertain whether they are leaving or returning, whether they are disappointed with the people of Earth or whether they have finished their mission and returned home to find their planet is not as it was.
The powers are not as important here, but you do see the eclipse logo on their clothes.
By the way, the lyrics and the MVs are not always linked.
A comeback is huge in Kpop and involves going onto the music shows to try to win against other songs and a mass of other promotions. It's hectic and very hard work. They often sing other songs during those promotions, but the Title Track is the important one. The pre debuts were not promoted. As you know, the debut release date was carefully calculated to fit their concept and it was the originality that announced EXO as a more mature and talented group (if young in actual age!). Doing the three enabled them to show their potential quickly, but they only had to spend time promoting the one.
The lyrics and MV are not always linked, you are right. But the lyrics of "History" are totally designed to tell EXO's story. The lyrics of "History" set up EXO's storyline and explain why they are being sent to Earth.

One thing I noticed about ExoPlanet is that ExoPlanet is like Mars (sand) on the surface but crystal like on the inside (the dance sequence). You're actually right, that blue crystal ball in the starting is their spaceship. You'll find that in Miracles in December too.

It's Exo planet and you're welcome on it 😂 , like you said "What is love" was classic and *Mama was epic when in History they were just hyping like a little party on the space ship , and yes here they didn't have the Powers yet cz they hide it on earth , maybe 🤔 😂😂 it's confusing . Juste do the MVs , don't get too much in the story line , I think it would've been very easy if you did the Exo ultimate guide " Cesar oh" they explained the story line in a Claire short way ,

So History will have more storyline bits and it is a showcase of their performance/dance talent. It is EXO Planet. History is one of my favorite songs to be honest. This one and Machine from the first mini album. I think the pre-debuts are under appreciated sometimes, same with B-side songs. History is one of the first songs i learned about when I did my dive....the other was monster and overdose.
Exo theory indeed interesting yet confusing... you must follow their predebut till now to know their theory 😁
