Interesting. When reading I felt Demian's mother and Pietrus are all in his head. Obviously if Demian is an aspect and not a separate entity, then his mother cannot be otherwise. Overall it's a simple story that was probably mind blowing before people were exposed to Hinduism or Buddhism or Zen; hell even the Matrix and Fight Club cover many of the same themes and in a richer manner.

For any and all who view Demian as containing a philosophy of life worth adopting you would be doing yourself a disservice if you have not yet read Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. Hesse paints a rosy picture of the embodied philosophy of Demian (his voice for the philosophy of Nietzsche). I would argue that Dostoevsky paints a far more realistic picture of what this philosophy looks like in reality. Either way, one must always examine the other perspective. Proverbs 18:17 "The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him." Dostoevsky does an incredible job cross-examining Nietzsche.

Funny enough I finished Demian today and Finished Crime and Punishment before starting it about 2 days ago. I think both storys depict realistic depiction of the ubermensch of Nietzsche. One is radical one and another is a passive one. It’s ironic that one was born into wealth and is an ubermensch vs the other who was born in poverty. Another dynamic two these two characters is their nationality, in demian you see there has been a stirring conflict between Russians and Germans, Sinclair is german and raskolinkov is obviously russian. Fascinating books

I thought it was excellent. I’ve only recently gotten deep into literature(because of the quarantine), and Demian was first on my list. I related deeply to Sinclair on his viewpoints on religion, and how he saw the world differently than his family. On top of that, Herman Hesse’s use of descriptive language is unlike anything I’ve read! The amount of detail he puts into his writing truly draws me into the world of the story.

IdeaBits also, any good books you’d recommend? They don’t have to be similar to Demian, but just great literature

    Gotta say this ....
    Just a great thumbs up....
Though I don't know how and where I can read this legendary book ...cause I don't have enough of source but ... if by chance in life I got the chance DEMIAN Is gonna be the first on my list of way to the piles of the books 😀😇.... cause the concept ...the theory and the vibe was just ... of another level I got ...
    Well... I had a question ...
ABRAXAS. ...why he is known as the God of good and evil ....cause good and evil are different cause of just one single reason that they are opposite but... still it's way too huge and enough to make both of them go opposed to eacj other. .. and so... in order of being so.. different how ABRAXAS being the one is known as THE GOD OF BOTH
    "EVIL " AND "GOOD"
    JUST HOWWWW! !??

Demian introduces to Sinclair the concept of questioning his religious learning. Demian talks about his perspective on the story of Cain and Abel, and that he doesn't believe Cain was "all evil". He then introduces Sinclair to the concept of embracing the good and evil side of himself and the world. He also talks about the fact that worshipping only goodness (God) is pretty much impractical because goodness does not exist without evil. When he talks about Abraxas, he's telling Sinclair that Abraxas is both, God and Satan, light and dark, good and evil. Abraxas is a more realistic 'God' in terms of real life because he represents good AND evil, not JUST goodness.
