"Österreich" in english "Austria", officially "Republik Österreich" in english the "Republic of Austria," is a country located in the heart of Central Europe. With a population of approximately 9 million, Austria is a moderate-sized nation on the continent. It is bordered to the north by Germany and the Czech Republic, to the east by Slovakia and Hungary, to the south by Slovenia and Italy, and to the west by Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Vienna is the capital and largest city, and is an important cultural and political centre. Other major cities include Salzburg, Innsbruck and Graz.

The national anthem of Austria is based on the melody of "Lasst uns mit geschlungnen Händen", which was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, although its authorship is now disputed and attributed to Johann Holzer or Paul Wranitzky. Before World War II, Austria used the melody of Haydn's "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser" as its state anthem. After the war, a new state anthem was created with lyrics written by Paula von Preradović.
In 1946, it was officially declared the national anthem of Austria, although without lyrics, which were added in 1947. In 2012, changes were made to the lyrics to make them gender-neutral. There were attempts in the 1990s to modify the lyrics for more gender-neutral language, but faced resistance.
