Exactly. Had they listened to Charlotte, then presumably Jane would have been married without delay and a lot of shenanigans avoided.

This is why I prefer '95 Charlotte over 2005 Charlotte. 95 Charlotte came off more tactical and objective, '05 Charlotte came off desperate

Agreed. I like how '95 Charlotte says, "I'm not romantic, you know. I never was."
Whereas '05 Charlotte says, "Not all of us can afford to be romantic."

I think '05 Charlotte WAS desperate (the character trait is intentional I mean). It's also a very relatable thing...some of us ARE too ugly to be picky based on romance. And with the pressures that '05 Charlotte faced she felt it was necessary to marry the man who showed interest even if she didn't like him at all

Have you seen The Lizzie Bennet Diaries? It's a modern take on Pride & Prejudice, available in full on UA-cam, and Charlotte is absolutely brilliant in it. In fact, she's my favourite character in it.

I love Charlotte Lucas - she was pragmatic, she "secured" a good, if not handsome/clever man, and she was happy in the end! Not many women of her time could say the same.

The book tells us he was a mixture of pride and obseqiousness, self importance and humility. He was not a good man. In fact when Lydia ran away with Mr Wickham he wrote to their father to gloat about it, under the guise of concern. He outlined with glee that the other girls might never be marriageable and the terrible shame that had fallen on the Bennet family.

i don't think Charlotte's husband was good exactly, she preferred spending her days without him, he was foolish, obsessed with social rank, not perceptive and he fawned, but he wasn't malicious and he had enough money for her to be secure.

She's such a smart, rational, and clear-sighted woman. She's been right about everything. I love that she supports the union between Lizzy & Darcy and urges Lizzy not to be prejudiced against him.

Charlotte may have been the one who let her husband know that mr. Darcy proposed to Lizzy. Charlotte knew that mr. Collins will gladly blurt this out to lady Catherine, who, with all her authoritarian nature, will press Lizzy to refuse. And knowing Lizzy as brave, honest and straightforward, Charlotte might have imagined that her friend will not budge to the pressure and mr. Collins may have a better parish opportunity as a result. 😉 Smart, practical girl. And a good friend.

There is one more scene at Rosings Park path when Collins runs shouting that Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam were arriving. Charlotte tells Lizzie that the motive would be Lizzie' s presence there right then.

If mrs Bennet was embarrasing for Lizzy, how cringy is not sir Lukas for Charlotte. No wonder she took the chance to move away from her fathers home with a man she could make happy. And create her own home to her own taste. A married woman back then had so much advantages compared with an "old" maiden. Getting married back then was a bit like applaying for a job these days. And a vicars wife was a respectable one, and Charlotte should be great at the job looking after people in her parish.

I truly understand Charlotte's fears & concerns and on the surface I think she does appear extremely rational and level headed but I also believe that her decision to marry Mr. Collins was ultimately made out of fear. She was 27 years old, had no prospects and zero interest from any admirers whatsoever and she panicked. She rushed into her plan to persuade Mr. Collins to propose to her and succeeded but in all honesty, I can't see the novelty of having her own home and leaving the authority of her parents being enough to sustain her long term or make up for the fact that she was married to such a pompous and ridiculous man she had no romantic feeling for whatsoever. When you compare her situation to Lizzie & Jane's, you realise there is no comparison. Charlotte's ending is my worst nightmare and I wouldn't wish an unhappy marriage on anyone. In my opinion, all Charlotte Lucas had in store for her was loneliness, regret & isolation. A loveless marriage is what she ultimately ended up with while Lizzie found her soulmate as well as her equal.

Charlotte is the voice of common sense in the story. Also, pretty sure she's the one who whispered into Lady Catherine's ear that Darcy had proposed to Elizabeth. Thus ensuring that Lady Catherine would drive them together. Mr. Collins has no idea how much smarter Charlotte is compared to him, which allows her to end up married to the heir to Longbourn, guaranteeing her own future as the wife of a landed gentleman. Sure, she doesn't love him. But she doesn't care. It's a sensible marriage that benefits her in the long-term. Elizabeth should have taken Charlotte (who is older than her) more seriously.
