I think Mikko's videos are Great because he actually gives people the tab in a concise legible manner, and doesn't force people to buy EVERYTHING he shows you from his patreon page. I think Mikko is a very good educator. I would also play those chromatic bop licks, ascending and descending into the chords to mix it up, and i really like mikkos jazz blues feel, and playing. Relaxin at the Camarillo is a great head to learn. I totally agree with you regarding new players, playing to the recordings. That is the best way to learn, and the way that all the old guys learned to play. ALL the musicians that you recommended, are gonna be the best teachers. I'll ad one more tune " I Need A Fix," by Joe Pass. The song Buzzy has some lines that sound like " Penny Lane. I feel the best way for a student to start improvising is to start with pentatonic, then add the passing tones, or neighbour notes, then to start adding the scales. Every student when they begin will have to think about what scales to play, but eventually it will ALL flow from the subconscious, because if you think while playing, you will stink. Birks works is my favourite Jazz Blues.Thx for this video.
Another great lesson Mikko. Thanks for sharing what took years of distilling a treasure trove of information. This will save the budding jazz/blues player a lot of time and wasted energy.
I took a jazz improv class and the instructor gave me a "C-." I went to see him and asked why? He said, "You never really got the Blues. You were trying to fake it with a bad attitude."
A lot of what you cover in this video is what attracted me to trying to play jazz guitar back in my teens. Hearing Kenny Burrell got me more interested than say... Joe Pass. There weren't many books available back then. The 1st edition of the Real Book (bought under the counter), for chords there were Ted Greene's books and a book that had some good basic riff based bounce blues and chordal approaches was Mickey Baker's Complete Course in Jazz Guitar. The Baker book 1 was a go to volume for the jazz blues kind of approach back in the 1970's when I was first learning. Great lesson as always Mikko! I feel inspired to start revisiting riff blues based tunes and work on the bop scales which I've not put in enough time on to be honest. Thanks man! Much appreciated 🙏
So I watched this again Mikko, and I’ve checked out the following Blues “heads”: Buzzy, Bud’s Blues, Cool Blues, Sonnymoon for two, C Jam Blues, Chitlin’s Con Carne, Birk’s Work’s, Blues in the Closet, Splanky & Blue Seven Did I miss any tunes? Did you get anymore suggestions? Which Charlie Parker “heads” do you recommend learning, apart from Billies Bounce … ? I get SO much out of your videos - top stuff!!! 👏👏👏
thanks! That's a good start. I recommend all the Parker blues heads you can find 😎 Au Privave and Swedish Schnapps for example . Tenor madness. Not sure who wrote that one. Monk has a few nice ones
@@Mikkokosmos Here you go - Another Hair Do, Au Privave, Back Home Blues, Barbados, Billie´s Bounce, Bloomdido, Bluebird, Blues (Fast), Blues For Alice, Buzzy, Cheryl, Chi Chi, Cosmic Rays, Cool Blues, Hot Blues, K.C Blues, Laird Bird, Mohawk, Now´s The Time (old), Now´s The Time (new), Parker´s Mood, Perhaps, Si Si, Visa I found that list on jazzguitar.be - apparently Bird recorded 175 Blues heads - he died aged 35?!?!
I used to own a super nice Martin when I was working as a freelance musician but I sold it when I moved to Canada. I don't care too much about vintage guitars unless we're talking Django style guitars but I will never be able to afford one 😭
Thank you 😃👍 sure If I know the tunes you're thinking of. I have a few chord melody lessons. For example on Darn That Dream, You Must Believe in Spring and Beautiful Love 😎
Enjoyed the lesson. I am curious why you left out the melodic minor substitution a 5th up from the root. i.e F melodic minor against B-flat 7 Bb melodic minor against the E flat seven etc. Blues of course is a important part of the vocabulary but I do get tired of the clichés .."blues on top of blues on top of blues on top of blues"..As you know including melodic minor helps to get away from a tired sound ....I wonder what you think...instead of just the mixolydian example scales , adding melodic minor as the next step to freshen up things ..maybe that's another lesson. The concepts and techniques that you used work great. Well Done Thank You.

Ya I also had to swim in murky waters to get my first copy of the real book 😎
@@Mikkokosmos
Yup... those real books definitely were not displayed on the shelves with the rest of the books. 😉
Great😊
Great video sir, tell me, what size pick are you using?
Yes, Frank Foster🎷
Fantastic video, one of the best if not the best video on this subject. (Still have to check "things I learned from Barry Harris" of course)
Thank you 😎👍
Good stuff as usual Thank you so much

Great video. I like your affection for mid priced instruments. Do you own and any boutique guitars? You certainly deserve at least one.

Formidable lesson, I have learned many things. Thank you very much maestro. Is it possible to buy the pdfs with the exercises?
Thanks 😃 sure message me from here and I will send you the pdf:s and you can PayPal me a couple of $ 😎
@@Mikkokosmos Give me your pay pal account and I'll send you the $ pair right away.
@@salvadorgarcia8661 it's better to do it via email. UA-cam can block commenrs when you put links on here 🙃
Also Charlie Parker often played the major scale (with Maj7) on a blues. Sounds very "Bird" and Beboppy.
People act like the major scale doesnt exist anymore lol
Mikko, I just become a donor at patron. Could I please request some classes on chord melody arrangement? Thank you!

Mikko I can't read music is there another way to Transcibe? Do they have this stuff In Tab?
Use your ears. My sight reading is also bad and never bothered that too much.
sorry you mean the blues melodies? Try learning them by ear 😎👍
"Straight No Chaser" - or is Monk too weird to start off with ... ? ;-). (Have to watch this again, so good job!)
Thats maybe not the best tune to start with 😃
This!!!
What's the voicing of that last chord at 26:08?
E triad over Bb triad so from the highest string E B G# (E triad) D Bb F (Bb triad) 😎
@@Mikkokosmos AWESOME. Thank you sir.
I need more 1 6 2 5 Ideas to play.

Yeah the video would be too long 😄 I did talk about that stuff in my video on the Lydian b7 scale, though. I talked about the tune Blue Seven 😎
“Bag’s Groove” … ?
Too much reverb, man....
Ok I'll turn it down
