Yeah! Also, the sessions for « Free As A Bird » and « Real Love » are closer in time to the Beatles split than to the present! How about that for a shock!
Thank you. This type of respectful analysis is exactly what the song needs. And just imagine going to your first ever gig and seeing The Who and Jimi Hendrix on stage and all four Beatles in the audience. Amazing times.
American here…but British father from Liverpool. I knew they were saying “pretty nurse selling poppies from a tray” I knew the reference. I also remember hearing that original ending with the piccolo trumpet on the radio in 1967, I was 13 . A couple of comments…Lennon did co-write the lyrics but undoubtedly it was mostly Paul, also if I am correct George Martin did actually write a score out for the piccolo trumpet solo working with Paul and David Mason noted that he had one note over the range of the instrument but Martin knew that and said , you can do it…and he did! Great episode.
My brother and I went on the Fab Four Taxi Tour just over a year ago and the host/driver was fantastic, his knowledge as you’d expect was amazing, he strung together a very imaginative take linking together the places in Penny Lane.
By the way, as an American, the English idiom lent an addition psychedelic element to us in the US. For instance, I thought "Blackburn Lancashire" was a person until I was in my 20s
There is a video on UA-cam of David Mason talking about his solo for which he was paid £27 10s. Then someone else pays the solo in front of him as by the time the video was made he had retired from playing.
7:14 One likely reason Paul changes down one key to A major for the chorus is because at the end of the chorus he's back in B major for the next verse. If he didn't go down to A major he would end up in C# major for the next verse. Another likely reason is to give the impression he has gone back to the past.
...and for trivia buffs: on the day of Penny Lane's UK release, FEB 17th 1967 a baby girl was born; coincidentally named... Penny Lane. I often wonder if she ever knew? 🤔
Don't know how the tech works but it happens all the time. I have to switch from home page to subscriptions at the end of each TalkTV show. Could be something to do with Talk's continuous feed whereas UA-cam is in bite sized chunks.
Crazy to think it was only 4 years between Love Me Do and Strawberry Fields!

The best “Single” ever released by anyone anywhere…both songs are masterpieces.

Great, I love the idea of Unbeatled and looking at songs in depth! Penny Lane is a great one
What a moment in the Beatles' career.
Really enjoying this series. How long before you do ‘Wild Honey Pie’…? I bet even you guys could get something out of it.

I enjoyed this. Thanks!
You didn't discuss the lyric "A four of fish and finger pies".
In all these many years watching the Penny Lane promo I'd never noticed that they ride the horses past a Beatles stage set!
Very pleasant conversation even as a non native English speaker. High quality information. Thanks for this superb interview.
Our pleasure!
When I was an (American) kid, I knew she was selling poppies. But I thought her name was Ness, not that she was a Nurse

I'd love to see you play a Mellotron and just have fun with those legendary sounds

🇧🇷🙏❤️
The nonsensically arranged spots on the neck of that guitar in the backdrop bug the hell out of me. Was that image made by AI?
I dont like the beatles
Yet here you are.
You might not be too into this podcast I'd venture to guess
How exciting
I'm more a Rutles man myself.
So why comment? I can't stand Queen but wouldn't comment on a video dissecting one of their ponce rock songs and say I dont like them.
